During this time of year, fans break out cult classic films to binge such as &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trick R&#8217; Treat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evil Dead<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halloween<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; and various other slasher and monster films that stretch the limits of imagination.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having been a horror fan my entire life, I often wonder what it would be like to write and direct a horror movie. While speaking with New York City horror filmmaker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0456031\/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeremiah Kipp,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0he offered some insight into what it&#8217;s like to work in <strong>horror filmmaking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89875\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89875\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89875 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Jeremiah-Kipp_-Photo-by-Charles-Chessler.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Jeremiah-Kipp_-Photo-by-Charles-Chessler.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Jeremiah-Kipp_-Photo-by-Charles-Chessler-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo of Jeremiah Kipp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using nothing but an old VHS camcorder, Jeremiah began making films as a kid in rural Rhode Island. That passion led him to attend NYU film school and he continues to make movies with his friends today \u2014 just on a much larger scale. Over the past 25 years, he has built up a vast library of work that makes him a sought-after commodity in today&#8217;s horror scene that\u2019s been salivating for a fresh perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re a little kid watching these horror movies, it feels like this mysterious adult world\u2026like you\u2019re being told secrets of something,\u201d Kipp said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kipp\u2019s Love for Horror Filmmaking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every horror film lover has that one moment they fell in love with horror. With Jeremiah, it was no different. He finds himself reminiscing about the movie that fostered his interest in horror \u2014 &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0077402\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn of the Dead&#8221;<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1978) by George A. Romero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cI remember the heroes of that movie live in a shopping mall and they have to kick all of the zombies out of it. I thought that was the most fun that anyone could possibly have. Living in a shopping mall, you\u2019re driving a car around inside of it, and it\u2019s filled with zombies,\u201d he said. \u201cThat sounds like the wildest thing. That\u2019s so exciting on every level as an audience member and as a filmmaker and I wanted to do that. I wanted to do that for a living.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kipp later read a book about how George A. Romero made &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Night of the Living Dead<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; It helped solidify the realization that he wanted to make horror movies. He was inspired by these filmmakers who had no money, but what they did have was a really interesting idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll of our common fears and fantasies can get translated into horror movies.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a young, budding horror filmmaker, he also found inspiration in &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0072271\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Texas Chainsaw Massacre&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1974) by Tobe Hooper.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remember watching it as a kid and being so afraid. There was so much chaos and danger on the screen. You could feel the Texas heat beating down on the characters when they\u2019re in the house. It\u2019s almost like you can smell the smoothie,\u201d Kipp said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Texas Chainsaw Massacre is often remembered for its blood and gore, Kipp prefers the building of dread and anticipation in his own work. He believes the longer the filmmaker can sustain a feeling that something terrible is about to happen, the more entranced the audience will be. It\u2019s about suspending their disbelief and making them wonder where evil will come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll of our common fears and fantasies can get translated into horror movies.\u00a0 When you\u2019re watching from a safe distance, you\u2019re able to just experience the thrill ride,\u201d Kipp said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>On the Set of a Horror Film<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people will never get the chance to experience true movie-making magic. By that, I\u2019m referring to being on a film set and watching the vast amount of blood, sweat, and tears that go into making any film \u2014 especially horror. What does that experience feel like?<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89876\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89876\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89876\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BTS-Photo-by-Michael-Falsetta_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BTS-Photo-by-Michael-Falsetta_2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BTS-Photo-by-Michael-Falsetta_2-173x300.jpg 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo provided by Jeremiah Kipp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s completely unlike watching a horror film because, when you\u2019re watching a horror film, you\u2019re immersed in the world of the story,\u201d Kipp said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re making it happen, it often feels more like a muppet show. Everyone on set can see in front of them how silly the makeup looks on this monster with rubber and puppetry. The whole thing just looks ridiculous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although, that\u2019s only a single part of the entire horror filmmaking process. There\u2019s plenty of work that goes into making a film including penning the screenplay, casting, set building, world building, sound, score, and more. What may hold a more important focus to one filmmaker won\u2019t hold true for another.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cActors are some of the greatest special effects there are. If the actor fully commits and believes the terror, the audience will believe it too.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Jeremiah, he spends a large part of his time thinking about not only the character, but also the actor. A lot of that has to do with selling the scare or the monster itself. In a movie, only an actor can help bring the truth to all of that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cActors are some of the greatest special effects there are. It also doesn\u2019t hurt to make them as real as possible, to help add a level of believability for the audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe all feel scared in our everyday lives. But, when we see it in a movie, it becomes fun because you get to experience that sense of adrenaline without any danger actually happening to you,\u201d Kipp said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Breaking into the Horror Film Industry<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should come as no surprise that it took years of hard work, learning, experience, and failures to get to where Kipp is today. He\u2019s also been a producer and assistant director in between his own directing gigs to help pay the rent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first horror gig he ever directed was a short film, called \u201cContact<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that was heavily inspired by David Cronenberg. Eventually that short film played at 60 film festivals and producers took notice. They wanted him to direct a feature (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his first<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1757901\/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_33_dr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sadist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d starring horror icon and makeup artist, Tom Savini. He was then able to direct his first feature off the back of a short film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the success of the film \u2014 and happy producers \u2014\u00a0he created another short film about a science experiment that goes wrong. Not only did he have similar success on the film festival circuit, but it was even greater.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, he found his short playing at over 100 festivals and another set of producers had approached him about directing another feature film. This time, it was directing a vampire film set in Brooklyn. After that, there was an H.P. Lovecraft-style film called, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4839118\/?ref_=nm_knf_i_1_dr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Wake<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starring Tom Sizemore<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Horror Filmmaking Gear and Props<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kipp suggests avoiding traditional styles and lens choices. Instead, he tries to be bold and daring in the way he shoots horror films with both high and low angles. Low angles make the enemy look more powerful while the higher angles can make a character look powerless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be afraid to be wildly experimental. Use the tools at hand to take risks, make things feel or look more distorted than they may normally need to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t think of anything more exciting than making a horror movie. Who wouldn\u2019t want to experience turning Jeff Goldblum into a giant fly? How many times are actors asked to play a fly?&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many in horror filmmaking tend to work with extremely limiting budgets, so VFX is not always the best choice. Practical SFX makeup and prosthetics tend to be the go-to. For Jeremiah, it\u2019s no different. While it depends on the story, monster, and effects, he feels practical makeup is best since the audience tends to respond better to things that seem more relatable. It can be exciting to think out of the box to make the audience feel afraid and unnerved without spending a ton of money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t think of anything more exciting than making a horror movie. Who wouldn\u2019t want to experience turning Jeff Goldblum into a giant fly? How many times are actors asked to play a fly?\u201d Kipp said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Thoughts on Film School<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quentin Tarentino has been probably one of the biggest vocal advocates against film school. We\u2019ve heard it time and time again. Jeremiah\u2019s perspective was a little different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI knew nothing before film school. In film school, I learned technique. After film school, I learned what not to do on sets and in storytelling. After that, I think you\u2019re ready to make movies,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there certainly isn\u2019t a right or wrong answer, and everyone should do what\u2019s best for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou meet so many interesting people on movie sets. You come to realize that everyone gets there their own way,\u201d Kipp said. \u201cBack in the 90s, it was cheaper to go to film school. There was also no YouTube around. However, film school can be necessary to build a culture of like-minded people.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Advice for Future Horror Filmmakers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter if you\u2019re looking for a career in front of or behind the lens, the roads taken to success in the horror filmmaking industry are vast. No one can give you a direct answer and, ultimately, the path you choose is what\u2019s best for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kipp\u2019s advice for up-and-comers looking to break into horror filmmaking was simple: \u201cWork begets work.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directors should take on the projects that come their way and do them well. Rather than letting your work sit around, put it out there for people to see. After directing a few shorts written by others, he eventually became a work-for-hire director. On his first three features, he would be directing other people&#8217;s scripts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sixth feature he directed took him almost ten years to make. \u201cSlapface<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (starring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm5153308\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August Maturo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Dan Hedeya) was based on a short film that was used as a proof of concept. He knew if he never was able to make the feature, at least he was able to make the short. I just told the story I wanted to tell and wanted to make,\u201d Kipp said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeremiah recently finished working on a short film called, \u201cDon\u2019t Pick Up\u201d starring horror icon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0202966\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keith David<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pre-production on \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VQp7HyQZQ5w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mortuary Assistant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (a horror game adaptation being developed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreadxp.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DreadXP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/epic-pictures.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epic Pictures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and several other features and short films that are coming down the pipeline over the course of the next few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Final Words<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I was wrapping up my conversation with Kipp, I couldn\u2019t help but ask the question I was dying to know: &#8220;What\u2019s your favorite Halloween-themed line from a movie?&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He laughed for a moment before taking a minute to gather his thoughts, and then said:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn John Carpenter&#8217;s \u201cThe Thing,\u201d when the spider head is walking away, the guy looks over and says exactly what the audience is thinking\u2026&#8217;You\u2019ve gotta be f***ing kidding me.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PjX2jAQPYtg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slapface<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (a Shudder Original) is available to stream on Shudder and AMC+.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The air is cool, the leaves are changing, and the sounds of zombies can be heard from living rooms everywhere.
