For New York Times best-selling author Joanne Molinaro \u2014 widely known as <a href=\"https:\/\/thekoreanvegan.com\/\">The Korean Vegan <\/a>\u2014 it sparked over cooking shows during law school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all started with Rachael Ray\u2019s 30-minute meals on The Food Network,\u201d Molinaro said. \u201cI watched that show obsessively during law school. I never really cooked, but I loved watching her and found it so comforting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These days, Molinaro\u2019s not just following in Ray\u2019s footsteps \u2014 she\u2019s carving a path of her own: lawyer by day, powerhouse culinary creator by night.\u00a0She\u2019s the founder of The Korean Vegan brand, which includes a best-selling cookbook, well-known blog, and a social media presence with 4.5 million fans. She\u2019s also the brains behind the buzz-worthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thekoreanvegan\">The Korean Vegan <\/a>TikTok channel, which has more than 3 million followers ready and waiting for her tasty plant-based recipes.<\/p>\n<p>We talked with Molinaro about her rise to culinary-creator fame, including how she went from dabbling in TikTok to netting 3 million followers, plus the gear and food tips she swears by to make those recipes pop off the screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90964\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_0036.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_0036.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_0036-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_0036-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The Start of @TheKoreanVegan on TikTok<\/h2>\n<p>Molinaro, who\u2019s been a lawyer since 2004, began her food-creator endeavors in 2016. She went from watching and learning via The Food Network to cooking and baking alongside her father-in-law from Rome. After she went vegan, her kitchen time picked up because there weren\u2019t as many options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to learn quickly and, luckily, between Rachael Ray, YouTube, and the little bit of cooking I\u2019d been doing with my husband and his father, I felt comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, she leapt from hobbyist chef to The Korean Vegan, with a blog and handles on popular social media sites like Instagram and YouTube. When 2020 rolled around, it was time for a new experiment: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/how-to-use-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TikTok<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" style=\"max-width: 605px; min-width: 325px;\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thekoreanvegan\/video\/6983086982964448518\" data-video-id=\"6983086982964448518\">\n<section><a title=\"@thekoreanvegan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thekoreanvegan?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@thekoreanvegan<\/a> <a title=\"vegan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/vegan?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#vegan<\/a> <a title=\"glutenfree\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/glutenfree?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#glutenfree<\/a> <a title=\"pancakes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/pancakes?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#pancakes<\/a> <a title=\"foodtiktok\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/foodtiktok?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#foodtiktok<\/a> <a title=\"\u266c Buttercup - Jack Stauber\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/Buttercup-6758172399012677634?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u266c Buttercup &#8211; Jack Stauber<\/a><\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started TikTok largely because I wanted to know what all the fuss was about,\u201d Molinaro said. She was intrigued by the platform\u2019s vast potential and influence, particularly in politics. After watching as a consumer, she made the jump and became a TikTok creator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew I had a cookbook coming out in a year and that it would behoove me to expand my social reach. But I certainly didn\u2019t have any ambitious plans,\u201d she said. \u201cSince I had already been posting a lot of my photographs on Instagram, I figured, \u2018Why not just make a video with my phone?\u2019 That\u2019s literally what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three million followers later, the leap paid off.<\/p>\n<h2>The Importance of TikTok<\/h2>\n<p>Molinaro started with a simple filming setup. \u201cI threw my phone up against the wall while I was cooking and posted it on TikTok,\u201d she said. The first two videos netted some views here and there. Then she went viral, and everything changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a video go viral with millions of views in a couple of days was completely new to me, and it became almost addictive \u2014 I knew I wanted to keep doing that,\u201d she said. She realized the potential reach for her brand and business. It\u2019s such a low bar to entry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The return-on-investment for those 30 minutes? Off the charts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[TikTok] made me, The Korean Vegan, recognizable to a million people in just 48 hours.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201c[TikTok] made me, The Korean Vegan, recognizable to a million people in just 48 hours. Do you know how much advertisers would pay for that kind of visibility and reach?\u201d she said. Her guess is at least tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The increasingly popular social-media platform has not only helped her grow interest in her book and recipes. It\u2019s become critical for the growth of <a href=\"https:\/\/thekoreanvegan.com\/category\/podcast-newsletter\/\">her podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust start. I almost guarantee it\u2019s going to suck \u2014 just listen to my first podcast. But at least I did it,\u201d she said, noting the same goes for photography. She knew little about the craft in the early days of her blog. Now, she\u2019s the photographer behind the images in her New York Times best-selling and James Beard award-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/thekoreanvegan.com\/the-korean-vegan-cookbook\">cookbook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If starting feels overwhelming, take comfort. That first step doesn\u2019t mean you have to do this new thing forever. It\u2019s all about learning what works and what doesn\u2019t. That knowledge comes from firsthand experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one\u2019s saying you need to do it again,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not like you posted to TikTok and signed a contract that you\u2019ll post every day for the rest of your life. There\u2019s no pressure \u2014 just do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Break into &#8220;FoodTok\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Your first scroll through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thekoreanvegan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Korean Vegan\u2019s TikTok page<\/a> will inevitably make you hungry. On the second run-through, you\u2019ll also find FoodTok creator inspiration.\u00a0Her first tip for making your food and recipe videos stand out on TikTok is lighting.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lighting is at least 90 percent of it. If you have bad lighting, I can\u2019t help you!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cLighting is at least 90 percent of it. It does really well. It\u2019s optimized for the way we look at mobile devices,\u201d she said. \u201cA lot of times, I\u2019ll start with that top-down view to give a sense of what we\u2019re making. This gives them all the information they need in the first couple of seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another key food content tip: Add movement. Molinaro has very few static moments in her videos. She notes that movement is incredibly important in short-form videos because people don\u2019t have patience. They need to be constantly stimulated. This can be everything from action shots of cooking to steam rising from the dish.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use Social Media for Inspiration, Not Comparison<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to scroll through Instagram or TikTok and feel less-than compared to other creators. Although, not only are you seeing a fraction of the <em>actual <\/em>story or the creator\u2019s life, \u00a0you\u2019re also missing out on a major chance for inspiration and growth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Being on Instagram was the best thing for my photography because it forced me to consider other aesthetics, moods, white balances, and color palettes, without understanding the technical terms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cBeing on Instagram was the best thing for my photography because it forced me to consider other aesthetics, moods, white balances, and color palettes, without understanding the technical terms,\u201d Molinaro said. \u201cI would just see a photograph of food that looked amazing, that was different and made me feel something. (@thekoreanvegan)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>She spent hours and hours tinkering and experimenting to learn these tricks for herself. \u201cI had to do a lot of studying and practice to figure out how to recreate that kind of photo. And, once I recreated it, did I actually like it as much as I thought? Or how can I tweak this to make it mine, and to make it say what I want to say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Molinaro, this process is ever evolving \u2014 even now, following her growing list of awards and accolades.\u00a0One key lesson from Molinaro\u2019s Instagram inspiration sessions? If you admire someone else\u2019s work, you don\u2019t have to be a silent viewer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn one case, I became friends with [a creator I followed], and I invited her over. I was like, \u2018I want to learn from you,\u2019\u201d Molinaro said. \u201cI did the same thing a month ago for videography.\u201d This led to an informal three-day mini bootcamp training sessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt completely changed the way I make videos now.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Korean Vegan\u2019s Go-To Camera <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While Molinaro started TikTok filming on her iPhone, she does have cameras that she swears by: the Canon Mark III and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ica5dm4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canon Mark IV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy setup evolves, but I\u2019m pretty die hard about my equipment,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m a Canon gal. I love Canon and that is largely a function of its color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/?searchinfo=c+stand&amp;sel=Item-Condition_New-Items\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C-stands<\/a> for nailing those overhead food shots. With these, it\u2019s particularly important to find the right C-stand to support the weight of your camera and lens combination.
