I usually use color to lend narration to an image. It\u2019s a way to clue the viewer into what that light source is (or trying) to mimic. When I think\u00a0of the color green,\u00a0I think of grime but not filth. I think of sleek but off-putting, toxic\u00a0but\u00a0intriguing,\u00a0cartoony\u00a0but not over-the-top. But what is it about <strong>the color green in photography<\/strong> that\u00a0makes it so versatile to use?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Green as a Symbol<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Different hues of green can represent different things. For example, mint green can make a viewer feel much different than the color of moss, or even neon green. You can use many different shades of green to create different kinds of images. For example, green can often be used to represent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nature<\/li>\n<li>Health\/Disease<\/li>\n<li>Sci-Fi<\/li>\n<li>Envy<\/li>\n<li>Growth<\/li>\n<li>Money<\/li>\n<li>Luck (St. Patrick\u2019s Day)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Pairing Green with Other Colors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Monochromatic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A monochromatic look is achieved when green is the primary color in the frame. It might be clich\u00e9 to mix\u00a0green with a redheaded model,\u00a0but sometimes it just works.\u00a0When\u00a0used correctly, it can grab your attention and turn a\u00a0portrait\u00a0into something else worth a second (or third) look. You can sway more towards a yellower green or a bluer\u00a0green to achieve your desired \u201cvibe.\u201d\u00a0This is because green sits between blue and yellow on the color wheel.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Triadic Colors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Green, orange, and purple are triadic colors. This means they are equally spaced (and opposite of each other) on the color wheel. Funny enough, these are also the three colors most often used in Halloween decorations. If you\u2019re like to introduce color into a photo but still want to maintain a dark or moody vibe, green, purple, and orange together is a great option.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Use Green in Photography<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92894\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-92894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/screensaver-152.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/screensaver-152.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/screensaver-152-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/screensaver-152-673x1024.jpg 673w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Seth Miranda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Green Subjects or Props<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Green also has a strong tie to Sci-Fi, which helps when you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/tips-sfx-horror-photography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shooting SFX<\/a> like I do. Oftentimes, I will be working with a subject who has been painted green to be some sort of species out of an artist\u2019s\u00a0imagination.\u00a0While green can easily be cartoony, it can also balance out quite well when you build context around it. Whether it\u2019s a Matrix-type concept or just some kind of \u201calien,\u201d a greenish hue can provide an other-worldly feeling.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Green Background\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have access to amazing SFX, you can incorporate green elements in other parts of your image. For example, adding a green background is an easy way to introduce the color. Although, you can use green in more subtle ways to slowly creep into the viewer\u2019s comfort zone. Setting a vibe can be all you need to provide context, instead of a sterile studio space or bland location.<\/p>\n<p>Color in our images hold a lot of weight. \u00a0They speak a lot of words without saying anything.\u00a0They set the stage for what we hope to tell in our stories from frame to frame.\u00a0We all tend to have a demeanor about ourselves \u2014 so too does our photography.\u00a0Of course, none of\u00a0us\u00a0use just one color all the time.
