Better than expected.

I purchased this from Adorama website and use with 70-200mm. In my case, it gives me up to 400mm reach and it is great to shoot the subject far away. I read some reviews before, but this extender is better than I expected. However, it does not allow you to use AF, and you need to practice with manual focus. I will practice more and hope to have more great shots for my grandchildren's playing sports.

Great extension

I use this 2x with Canon 300mm f/2.8. There is no noticeable depreciation in the image quality after crop and the AF speed is still reasonably good.

Just More Practical

The economy is what the economy is. I traded a tele-zoom lens that I wasn't often using. Adorama was most helpful. However, I missed the extra reach of a 400 or 500 lens for the fun stuff like shooting the moon. Mounted to a Canon 70-200, this extender gives just the extra reach I need for occasional shots. Mounted on a tripod, and attached to another Canon lens, this was a perfect option.

Works with all the caveats that you hear

Yes this does soften things a bit like you've probably read,, but the extra reach is worth it. I used it indoors for a swim meet. Had to use a tripod and push the ISO but it worked wonderfully. For any tripod work or outdoor in good lighting you'll get good results. You'll lose a bit of contrast but nothing that isn't fixable. It's not a replacement for a real 400mm lens vs a 70-200 f/2.8, but for the price you can't beat it. The question is whether or not you really care about all that minutiae. I don't. Contrast and softness for my intended uses are a non-issue. I wouldn't use this, for example, for portraits, but that's silly. Use it for some situations where it makes sense and you won't be disappointed.

About Canon Extender EF 2x II Tele Extender, Gray Market

This extender has been re-designed optically and offers excellent performance with compatible EF lenses (same as the Extender EF 1.4x II). Features a new seven-element design, and same weather-resistant design and anti-reflection internal construction as the new EF 1.4x II. The EF 2x II doubles the focal length of any lens it's mounted to, and reduces its effective aperture by two stops. With the EF 2x II, AF is possible with any EOS body if the lens has an f/2.8 or faster maximum aperture, and compatible Image Stabilization lenses maintain the IS feature when used with any current EOS camera.
