A Great Decision

By Mad S.

First, you should know that I suffer from a genetic abnormality common to many men of Scottish ancestry. I have deep pockets, but extraordinarily short arms. LOL. Spending money on a new camera is something that I don’t do lightly. I’ve also been in the Canon ecosystem for quite a few years now. My wife and I started with Rebel T3i’s some years ago, then moved to 80D’s for the past year or two. Between us, we’ve invested a significant amount of money in both EF and EFS lenses, and other Ca...

Very Nice Full Frame Mirrorless Camera!

By RES

My apologies up front for the length of this review. Let me start off by stating I purchased the EOS R (w/RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM and control ring adapter) directly from Canon since I am able to receive a very nice discount through work. I am also a very dedicated enthusiast photographer learning every day. Just stating my observations and opinions – I hope this review helps you in your decision to purchase or not to purchase an EOS R. I am very glad the EOS R eco-system came out when it d...

Discovering Canon’s New EOS R System

Meet Canon's new addition to the EOS System, the EOS R camera. The foundation of this system is an entirely new lens mount, designed for optical excellence today and incredible optical potential for the future.

Be the Revolution

Canon’s first ever mirrorless camera, the EOS R, proves to be well worth the wait with its revolutionary features. Integrated into the camera is Canon’s brand-new RF lens mount, which allows the EOS R to support a new series of lenses and highly advanced optical technologies. It also features a 30.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor and a powerful DIGIC 8 Image Processor that provide ultra high-definition 4K (3840x2160p) videos at 30fps, a wide ISO sensitivity range of up to 40000, and highly-detailed 30MP still images at up to 8 frames per second. Matching its UHD video recording capabilities are the built-in Canon Log gamma for greater dynamic range and distortion correction during Movie Digital IS. Accurate focusing is made possible with Focus Peaking, Dual Pixel Focus Guide, and the Dual-Pixel CMOS AF system, which boasts an autofocus speed of 0.05 seconds, a bigger focus area of 88x100 percent, 5,655 manually selectable AF points, and a rack focusing feature (Touch and Drag AF) using the swiveling 3.15-inch 2.1m-dot rear touchscreen LCD. Aside from these high-performance features, you also get a clear, hi-res 3.69m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a customizable Multi-Function bar that allows you to adjust camera settings more intuitively.

EOS R

Compatible with EF/EF-S Lenses*

Whether you’re purchasing your first EOS camera or your fifth, the EOS R camera is designed to integrate smoothly into existing EOS systems. Engineered to work seamlessly with RF lenses, it maintains complete compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses by using one of three optional Mount Adapters. When using EF-S lenses, the EOS R even crops automatically to reflect the APS-C sized sensor the lenses are designed for.

* Optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is required when using EF/EF-S lenses with an EOS R camera.

Lenses

54mm Large Diameter and Short Back Focus

The RF mount on the EOS R camera has a large, 54mm internal diameter that enables impressive handling and provides increased flexibility for lens design. And thanks to the camera’s mirrorless design, the lens’s rear element can be much closer to the image plane. This reduced back focus distance, combined with the RF mount’s 54mm diameter, helps facilitate lenses of stellar optical quality and stunning performance while enabling innovative compact camera and lens designs.

54mm Large Diameter

20mm Flange Focal Distance with Robustness for Professional Use

All RF lenses feature a 20mm flange focal distance, which is the distance from the lens mount to the surface of the image sensor. This flange focal distance balances the benefits of short back focus with the engineering requirements necessary for mount stability. Accordingly, the RF mount’s flange focal distance ensures excellent optical performance while maintaining the mount rigidity and camera durability necessary for real-world operation.

Flange

12 Pins for Quickly Communicating Large Amounts of Information

With a robust 12 pin connection between the camera and the lens, the EOS R camera and RF lenses are able to communicate at a higher speed, transmitting a larger amount of data and information for incredibly fast AF, plus enhanced image stabilization and optimization.

12 Pin

Open up New Possibilities with Control Ring Mount Adapters

Beyond enabling use of EF and EF-S lenses on the EOS R camera, the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and the Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R add functions that open up a number of new possibilities for creative image capture. The Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R adds a control ring like those found on RF lenses, providing the same level of control to your EF and EF-S lenses and supporting the same setting configuration regardless of lens. The Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R enables compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses and includes drop-in filter capability for use with circular polarizing filters or variable ND filters. This enhancement enables compatibility with numerous lenses regardless of their front diameter, and makes filter use possible with lenses like the ultra-wide EF 11¬–24mm f/4L USM lens or the tilt-shift TS-E 17mm f/4L lens which cannot accept a filter on the front.

Variety of Mount Adapter Options for Expanded Compatibility with EF/EF-S Lenses

Mount adapters, such as the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, deliver seamless connections between the EOS R camera and EF and EF-S lenses with all functions intact. Offering L series level weather and dust sealing, the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is even compatible with EF extenders like the Extender EF 1.4x III to extend your camera’s optical reach. With an entire arsenal of EF and EF-S lenses at your disposal, the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and other mount adapters ensure endless creative possibilities for the EOS R camera.

30.3 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS Sensor

The EOS R camera features a Canon-developed and produced 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with approx. 30.3 effective megapixels. It employs the DIGIC 8 Image Processor to enhance the speed of operations across the board. This means fast, efficient performance and phenomenal image quality for big prints, impressive 4K video and more.

30.3 Megapixel

ISO 40000

The EOS R camera has a standard ISO sensitivity range of 100¬–40000 for stills and 100¬–25600 for video (100–12800 for 4K video shooting). Combined with the EOS R camera’s remarkable low-light AF performance, still and video shooting is possible even in dark situations in a variety of places and occasions.

ISO 40000

Digital Lens Optimizer

The EOS R camera has an in-camera Digital Lens Optimizer that works with RF lenses (and EF/EF-S lenses with a Mount Adapter) to provide a substantial improvement in image quality. The Digital Lens Optimizer limits deterioration in image quality caused by low-pass filters or wide-aperture lens designs. It is particularly effective at correcting peripheral aberration, providing a high amount of detail for beautifully natural results. It’s usable both during shooting and when developing RAW data, and does not affect continuous shooting speeds. Data from compatible EF and EF-S lenses is built into the camera, and data information from RF lenses is transferred near instantly through the EOS R’s 12 pin communication system.

cmos

High-speed Focusing in 0.05 sec.*

The EOS R camera’s highly responsive Dual Pixel CMOS AF system features an incredible 5,655 manually selectable AF points** and can deliver sharp focus within 0.05 seconds*. This means fast action can be captured and focus can be maintained with speed, accuracy and ease. Whether taking candid photos in the park or making movies in an event space, the EOS R’s fast AF helps ensure speedy, accurate and consistent AF.
* Based on the results of AF speed tests in accordance with CIPA guidelines. Results may vary depending on shooting conditions and lens in use. Relies on internal measurement method.
Test conditions:
• Brightness at time of distance measurement: EV12 (regular temperature, ISO 100)
• Shooting mode: M
• Lens in use: RF 24–105mm F4 L IS USM, with a focal distance of 24mm
• Live-view mode: On (with manual shutter button operation)
• AF mode: Live single-point AF (central)
• AF operation: One-shot AF
** Available AF points may decrease when shooting with AF cropping or in movie mode, or depending on camera settings or lens attached.

High-speed

AF Area Coverage of Approx. 88% x 100%*

The EOS R camera features an expansive focus area of approx. 88% horizontal and 100% vertical^ not only with RF lenses, but also when working with select EF lenses. With older EF lenses, or with Extender types I and II, the EOS R focuses approx. 80% horizontally and 80% vertically. This means fast and impressive focusing even if your subject is way off center.
*When shooting still photos. Actual coverage varies depending on the lens in use.

AF Area

AF Points and AF Area

The EOS R camera features a sophisticated AF system with a maximum of 5,655 manually selectable AF points*, which covers almost the entire image sensing area. Not backward Compatible.

Just received my EOS R from Canon, overall the camera is good, however my SDXC UHS-1 cards did not work. I tried 6 different cards non of them worked. According to the documentation these cards should be compatible. I called Canon spoke to support they told me there is a switch in the menu to enable these cards before you can use them. However we could not find the switch. The engineer at canon stated they took out the option in production units and made it auto feature. I am having them repl...

Great Entry in to Full Frame Mirrorless

By Hobbymike

Lots of reviews out there on this camera. No Its not a high frame rate camera, its video has a crop, but overall a great camera. The feel of the unit in your hand is a nice size and feels solid. The focus is good and the noise level is to be expected with this many Megapixels. Adapts perfectly to Eos lenses and has been tested on 500mm on down to 11-24. Also used with a Sigma 85 art lens to great success. It takes getting used to as things are different but I chose it over the 5dMkiv after borrowing both.

AMAZING CAMERA!

By David T.

The Canon EOS R is a workhorse! Image quality is stellar and I've been creating some amazing images with his camera paired with my EL L glass.

Love this Camera

By ZOE M.

Transitioned from a full frame DSLR to this camera. Really enjoying the touch screen. Having the adapter so that I can continue to use my lenses is great. Loving the increased focus capabilities. It's a bit of an adjustment to go from a traditional DSLR to a mirrorless, but I'm really enjoying it as I continue to adapt. I am an avid hobbiest.

The quality of the build, picture is outstanding.

By Richard M.

I was so excited to hear about this camera. The quality of the build, picture is outstanding. When it was delivered I quickly put it to use and I was not disappointed. I love this camera. I would tell everybody to go out and buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Hello mirrorless!

By Christopher P.

I have been watching the EOS R since it came out. My choice was now between the EOS R or the RP. I went with the R because I was coming from a 6D Mark II. I love the electronic viewfinder, it's incredible even in harsh sunlight. Being able to make my adjustments within the viewfinder has changed the way I take photos. The LCD screen is offers a beautiful display, the dual-pix AF works great. Being able to use the touch screen as a touch pad AF point selector has proved to be really useful. I don't do much video with this so some of the drawbacks about the cropped 4K video didn't matter to me. Would definitely recommend this if you're looking to get into Canon's RF line of lenses and coming from a semi-pro body.

A great fit for my style of shooting-

By JASON N.

I upgraded from my main body, a canon 6d that served me well for the last 5 years. My primary use is B&W landscape and architectural photography. I also own a few Fujifilm and Sony mirrorless cameras, so was already familiar with the pros/cons of the mirrorless systems. I enjoy the fit and feel of the EOS R in hand, and except for the control bar..... all other buttons and functions work well for me. Losing the control bar and adding 2 more customizable buttons and joystick would be ideal in a future release. The image quality is very good coupled with decent lenses. I really enjoy the manual focus options, and find it the easiest to use with my manual lenses. Auto focus is superb as well, I’ve actually had it focus correctly through a 16stop Nd filter (in bright light) on several occasions, pretty impressive. For someone with a deep investment in quality EF Mount glass, using the basic adapter (which operates beautifully) I’ve been very happy with the EOS R.

Don’t let negative reviews sway your decision

By Derek K.

After reading many reviews, mostly negative, I was on the fence about this camera. Many people complained about the lack of dual card slots, poor video standards, etc. As I do only photo work, the video concerns didn’t bother me. I was iffy about the lack of a second card slot - but the upgrade to this camera for me was much more worth it than a little extra piece of mind. This camera is great - no issues with performance and exceeded all of my expectations. The focusing system is GREAT and worth the upgrade alone.

Great camera

Moved from a 5d Mkiii and just love it. Some people don't like the new controls layout, treat it with an open mind and you will enjoy it. A small full frame filled with great features. I was planning to buy a 5D Mkiv but after some research I came across the EOS R and decided to go for it. Glad I did so. Buy the addaptor and you can use all your EF lenses and extenders with no efect to the picture quality.

Coolest Full Frame Mirrorless & Love it!

By Kristi H.

I have now had my EOS R for over a month and I have been having so much fun with it. I have been using Canon DSLRs for years and I feel there is a bit of a learning curve with this Beauty. Not having a toggle and the touch screen as well as digital changes are some of the new things to get used to. Definitely worth it and the fact that I can use all my EF lenses is amazing. I am totally loving my R!!!

Dale C  Great specs and reviews. Have Canon lenses.
Edgar G  it looks cool!
PETE R  In need of full frame as I will be going into real estate photography
Stephen S  Mirrorless is the next phase of photography and at 31 MP we are talking huge files. Purchased my last camera over 5 years ago, the 6D, and while its served me well, I'm overdue for an upgrade. Held one in my hand just a few days ago and from an Industrial Design standpoint it looks like Stan Winston designed as an armament package for the Terminator. So cool!!! Can't wait to shoot the Milky Way with this thing. If it ever stops raining!!!!
Dirk R  Saw youtube reviews and convinced this is solid. A mini-Canon C200
Daniel B  I already have Canon bodies and lens. Most recent body is 5D Mark II, I wanted to upgrade.
Charles S  What can I say, I've been a Canon guy through and through for the past 25 years. I'm very excited to get my hands on the R and start creating with it!
Chrispin D  Needed a full frame.
Bobbie W  lots of research and it seems it is the one for me
Leon V  I'm moving forward to mirrorless cameras after working for years with 5D. I tried the EOS R and it blowed my mind! Amazing camera, highly recommended
carlo o  such a great camera over-all
JAMES J P  Replacing my 70 d
Nicholas P  I needed a camera with crisp images, touch screen door, video friendly & fairly good in low light.
LOWELL E  I am upgrading from a Rebel ti3. I thought about a mark Iv but thought the Eu was newer with the mirror less lens that I may be more happy with longer. The Len I purchased had such great reviews that I couldn’t help myself. The Benro products was something I want to try out I have a cheaper one but thouyfor the price of th set up I needed the ultimate secure to hold it up with no worry.
Jerry K  It seems to be the best value for my needs when it comes to a camera replacement.
Daniel B  Upgraded
Derrious A  the best canon as to offer
RICH M  Looking towards the future. I believe mirror less cameras will continue to grow and I’m getting into the transition now vs later. I have two 5D Mark II’s and have delayed upgrading until now. I need the advantages this camera will offer such as a LOT more focus points, articulating screen, touch screen controls, dual pixel AF, eye AF, silent mode and more.
JOHN T  Wish to move up to full frame and lighter body than using now. Want to stay with Canon brand.
Michael S  I didn't think I was interested in the EOS R, but I had a chance to handle one at the October Canon EOS workshop in Moab, and it was beyond impressive. Can't wait to get the 50mm f/1.2 lens as well. I was a bit disappointed to learn there is not a brand-new architecture for the sensor, but don't want to wait a couple years for the Mark II version.
Robert B  I have a 5D Mark III. With very little sacrifice (some frames per second and little used AI Servo), I get a lighter updated camera with Fv mode, which I can use as ISO priority. Eye and face detection AF. AF at almost all points in the frame! It includes a range illuminator for focusing in near dark. The EVF is bright and shows the final result even in near dark. The EVF can be magnified (aging eyes already make conventional view finder nearly useless). WiFi. Many programmable buttons.
Chris F  Does this come with the EF adapter or does one have to purchase separately?
Cody M  Separately
CHRISTOPHER S  Separately. There are three versions. Regular EF and EF-S adapter https://www.adorama.com/carmar.html, another one with a control ring https://www.adorama.com/carcrma.html and another one with a drop in filter https://www.adorama.com/carfrmap.html
RandyLee -  My research looked like the first week or two when it was released, there was supposedly a deal to get an EF adapter with it, then it went away, and now the adapter is a separate purchase.
CHAD B  You'll need to purchase separately....and you'll need to make sure apps like PS and Lightroom are updated to work with the new .CR3 file format.
Antoine M  here in the US we have to buy it but if you buy it abroad then its free.
OLGA S  You need to purchase it separately. There are few different models of adapters.
viewfinder v  It does not comes with an adaptor. You have to purchase separately. And I bought the adaptor with the control ring. It provide an extra way to control stuffs like: exposure compensation, ISO, shutter speed, aperture....etc. very handy. If you don’t think you care to have that extra control, you can opt for the cheaper adaptor with no ring on it. But you do have to buy it separately.
Michael S  Adapters are only sold separately. Two are on the market, and one is coming soon. They do work seamlessly with EF lenses, so are worth the expense if you are already invested in the Canon lenses. Enter
BILGIN S  You should buy an EF adapter separately
Christina C  You have to purchase one of the EF adapters separately.
Berni d  Body only = purchase separately.
ALEX B  No. Hoy need to buy it
Brandon B  separately
Jodi H  You'll need to purchase one separately.
WILLIAM L  They are separate
William S  My Canon Eos R did NOT come with any adapter but I had purchased a very good lens converter
Andrew R  The EF adapter is NOT included.
Arno M  Does this camera body have built in GPS?
Jason E  There is no GPS, but I believe it can use the connection to your phone or an optional GPS Module to embed location data.
Andrew R  GPS is NOT indicated
