There is a significant body of discussion online regarding ball heads (among other photography products). Many correctly argue that it is important to refrain from skimping on products like ball heads because inexpensive ball heads tend to sag or fail to support a significant amount of weight. That being said, I initially purchased a Manfrotto 498 RC2 ball head to use in conjunction with my Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. I wanted a sturdy setup that wouldn't break the bank. The tripod is great, although I wish it was carbon fiber. For the price, it's a no brainer.I am less enthusiastic about the 498 RC2 ball head, however. For [$], it's a good product. The knobs feel cheap, the ball head itself is small, but these factors do not impact the performance of the ball head. When I clamp down the ball head with either my 35mm prime or my Tokina 11-16mm lens, it does not budge. The Tokina is not as heavy as a 200mm fixed-aperture prime, but it features a metal exterior and is quite hefty. However, the RC2 plate was never 100% securely locked in. From time to time, it wobbles a bit.Ultimately, I felt that if I spent more money, I would be upgrading to a better ball head that will last longer than the 498 RC2. I would love to purchase a Markins or an RRS ball head, but they are too expensive for enthusiast photographers such as myself. I would rather spend the extra money on Lee filters or another lens.I stumbled upon the Cullmann Magnesit 6.3. It has the ability to hold up to 66 lbs., it is priced competitively and it is clearly a high-quality ball head. The QR system works well and it screws directly into the ball head, which allows you to use any QR system (including an Arca-Swiss QR system). The knobs require less turning to make adjustments than those found on the 498 RC2 and both the ball head and the 360° panoramic rotation operate far more smoothly.I am quite impressed with this product and I recommend it over the Manfrotto 498 RC2.
