Very useful in adding a little color accent to portraits and fashion photo shoots. Attaches very easily light stands.

I had the same problem as the first reviewer - once this is attached to the stand, there isn't room for the light anymore! So I had to borrow a 1/4" threaded adapter from a different stand to attach the light above the holder. If you buy this gel holder, make sure you have a way of attaching your light above it. I'm going to try to find something which clips onto the reflector instead; maybe that approach will work better. I don't blame this particular model so much as the whole idea of a stand-mounted gel holder, which seems like it is not the way to go. The bottom line is that this holder is fiddly and inconvenient, but it's cheap and it does work.

I purchsed this along with a short lightstand to throw some color on my gray background setup. I had no problem with it fitting the lightstand post as the other reviewer did. However, once I put this on the stud on the lightstand, there was no more room to mount the light. Luckily, I had a 1/4-20 adapter from another light stand (which I kept but thought 'when will I use this?'). So I mount the filter holder on the lightstand post, then screw in the adaper, and mount the light on that. Works like a charm. The device comes with an odd apapter and tightening screw, which I can't see a use for, but you can bet I'm going to keep it. I do think it was a bit expensive for what it is, but it seems to have enough adjustment knobs to be flexible enough.

I tried to use this to place a polarizer gel in front of a light. I had a problem in that the connector which fits on the light stand is too small to fit over the 5/8" pole of the light stand. This is baffling because the hole measures 5/8", but it's ever so slightly too small, like it needs to be a 1/16" larger. I also have the Smith Victor FH-1. The two units look identical, but the connector on the SV is ever so slightly larger and I'd recommend that instead of this one. Also the SV component pieces seem to be a bit more robust, but not by much.[...] so I got out the power drill and did a bit of very careful enlargement on the plastic connector. But honestly, I prefer making photos over field engineering my gear with power tools. I've never had a problem with any other Flashpoint products, but this one was quirky. My advice is to take your pick of possibly doing a bit of modification to the Flashpoint or spending a couple of extra bucks for the SV. I personally recommend the latter, but if you are handy with a drill, take care, and have patience, maybe the money is worth more to you than your time.
