My decision to purchase a Fellows DS-1 shredder was one of the best I've ever made! It works perfectly, The basket holds a lot so it doesn't need consistent emptying, and when its time to do so, its simple and easy no mess. Just like you would change the oil on a regular basis in a well built car, oil your Fellows every time you empty it and it will run forever, I've had mine for over 7 years now!

This shredder is something else. Never before has my office been blessed by such a well engineered, fantastic, intuitive, awe-inspiring piece of hardware. Holy cow. It shredded stuff one would never think shred-able. 10/10 would recommend. I have my faith in this shredder. It will never let me down, ever. It was there for me when nobody else could. <3

Like the fact that if you were to get too close, it will shut down. The chrome safety bar is the best thing to happen to a unit like this. With its strong motor, it just does not slow down.

I had this same product that lasted 5 years. When it was time to replace it, I looked at other styles but came back to this one. There are very few (if any) other styles that you can pull the basket out from the front versus the top. I could not use a shredder that you emptied by removing the top due to the cabinet that is above this shredder.

Just got to the end of two years warranty and it stops working. The gear seems to have gone bust. Which is a bit disappointing given the premium positioning of the shredder for home use. It has been otherwise ok, a bit messy when emptying, alwats need to hoover up afterwards. But it has done the job ok.

Purchased this many years ago for my home and business use. During that time others have used(abused) it, fed too many sheets sometimes jamming it, running it for extended periods (20 min and up) but with a little 3in one oil and me clearing the paper out she always keep going. Well they were finally able to strip the gears so now only can feed one sheet at a time if I am lucky. Time to replace it with the same style, and maybe fix this one if parts available as a back-up. With the tip out basket it is the easiest one I have found to empty.

Like other reviewers, my machine made it a couple of years before the forward "gear" died with full reverse motion! I was shocked because my previous Fellowes shredder wore out rather than died out! It seems this model had a miscue; next timeI'll read reviews first . . .

I purchased the first Powershred® DS-1 Cross-Cut Shredder in 2010 and within 2 years the motor burned up. It was only used for home use but my wife liked the design so I purchased the second one from Amazon in December 2011. We have used it also for just occasional home use and now the on/off and auto feed switch is not working and I'm going to have to purchase another shredder. While it looks nice, it is a terrible waste of money and I'd never purchase another one. We have a Powershred® 79Ci 100% Jam Proof Cross-Cut Shredder at work that gets used 100 times more than this one and it has worked great from day one so I believe this is a poor design or manufacturing issue.

I use this shredder for normal personal use, although I am confident it would work well for small business use also. This is the second unit I've purchased. The first one lasted about 7 years. The only reason I had to replace it is we inserted too many pages at once and the cutter jammed to the point I could not free it. It's rated to handle up to 11 pages at once, would should suffice for most applications. It also handles staples, cd/dvd and credit cards well. When researching for a new shredder, I found this unit to still be the best, most durable unit available for the money. The ONLY con is it tends to be a bit noisy when in operation. About the vendor (Adorama): This is the 1st time I've purchased from them and must say the experience was fantastic! Their price was better than anyone else and their email communication was perfect. They confirmed my order, let me know when it shipped, provided a tracking number, the product arrived quickly and was packaged beautifully. I would not hesitate to do business with them again. Typically I buy shredders, etc. from a well known chain that sells supplies to STAPLES. When I was looking for a new shredder I looked there. While I was there a customer happened to be returning a high priced shredder. She had it for 6 days and it stopped working. The well known chain refused to take the shredder. The woman was advised that she needed to send it to the manufacturer. I figured I better step back and research a shredder a bit better than I had. That's when I chose the Powershred. I feel it has been a great product plus in my office I get small children coming in with their parent and the safety feature is a plus!!

We used the shredder approximately 5 times. The shredder stopped and only went in reverse. We called customer support and was told "it is an OLD shredder, buy a new one." Customer support said it was probably the paper sensor and there were no repair parts available.

This shredder is great. It cuts the paper nicely and fast. I really like the dispenser. I just step down on it and the basket is delivered in my hand. The black and silver color matches all my office, products. Also the see through waste basket, is always lite weight even when fill to the brim with shredded paper. I use my shredder everyday, I shred all daily new papers and all printed out throw away work and junk mail so my shredder gets it's workout and I haven't had a jam or any problems. The quiet operation could be just a little better, but I did not buy this shredder for sound so to me it's O.K. The price is just what I expected to pay, because when a shredder works as good as this one does price doesn't matter. Thanks for a great product and I am a very happy customer.

I believe it's important to abide by two criteria with this product: 1. run it for only 5 minutes consecutively, then shut it down and allow it to cool off for 20 minutes; 2. lubricate the machine after each basketful, or once per month. I think this machine will last longer if you follow the written instructions that are included with your purchase.

Had an old P400C for many years now and because the cutter started to be noisy and stop, although still working, I bought the DS-1. Have to say that if I had read some of the other reviews here first, I wouldn't have bought it as there seems to be a common problem of it stopping working forward fairly quickly after purchase. But I guess time will tell. If this happens soon after purchase, I wont buy another Fellowes as they should address the problem. Apart from that I love the look of the shredder and it seems to work very well (should do it's only a day old). Couple of annoyances. The basket is taller at the front than the back. So when pulling the basket out, paper falls out the back of the basket all over the floor. Secondly, as the basket is mesh, paper dust easily escapes and is already clinging to the edges around the basket, making it look like I haven't dusted it for months. So after just 2 basket loads, it looks untidy/dirty. This is a shame as part of the reason I bought this model was it looked good. Although it looks great and works very well (for now), on reflection I wouldn't have bought it if I'd have known its 'problems' before hand. So overall I'm not quite as pleased with my purchase as I thought I would be.

The shredder just can't handle old documents. The safe sense technology will stop the shredder working on any paper older than a month.

I have 3 of these and the oldest is 7 years old. I like the visibility thru the basket screen to tell how full it is. The screen basket empties easily into plastic bags for recycle. This is the best shredder that I have ever had.

I have 3 of these and the oldest is 7 years old and all are still going strong. I like the tip out basket to discard junk mail that doesn't need to be shredded. The basket is screen is easy to see through to determine how full it is and it empties very easy into bags with out a mess on the floor with little caution. If any of mine breakdown I will definitely be buying another one just like these.

New out of the box...it's working great. I'll update this in about a year and let you know how it's working. It's a bit messy pulling out the basket...but not a big deal.

The shredder worked well for the 2 years I've had it. Was using it one day and it was working fine then it got hot and stopped working. It then started working in reverse and wouldn't go forward. Not sure what the problem is but customer service said the gear may have burnt out. Overall it was a good shredder but like everything else these days, not built to last very long.

Like the other reviewers the feeder mechanism is not functional, we have had our shredder for about 18 months with modest use and keeping to less than 10 sheets ( having had problems with its predecessor) Feeder now works in reverse only. Not possible to see from the web site whether it is possible to replace the part- guess like all things we are up for the cost of a replacing the whole unit. Lets hope number 3 lasts longer.

I have owned two DS-1 shredders, and both had the common problem of no longer running in forward, but continuing to work in reverse. This is a common and ongoing problem with the gearing (see other reviewers). Even if you baby the machine and run no more than five sheets of 20lb bond at a time, it still breaks.

For the last 6 years I have been using the Fellowes PS-30, the most this shredder could be would be 2 or 3 small thin papers and the heaver would just jam. When taking out the shredded paper from the old PS-30 it was never safe and took up alot of room. But the new DS-1 can do charge cards and take any letter that we get in the mail and get rid of the paper and shredd it into pieces that can not ever be traced. Plus the shredded material takes up less room then the Fellowes PS-30, I don't mind shredding now, The new DS-1 saves me time and room. I now can get rid of the papers that I need to get rid of for over the past 10 years, Thank you for making an affordable and good shredder.

I have purchased 2 of these in the past 3 years, the first one I just assumed wore out but my second one I have had for less than a year and it has quit working as well. I've taken care of both of them as far as making sure they were oiled and jam free however they both just stopped working. I'm disappointed because this model is great for a home office & reasonably priced but if I have to replace it every year to a year & a half it's definately not worth the money.
