I bought this tripod as a replacement for the excellent G1548 tripod I have had for many years. It provides the same stability but with the vast improvement of the G lock system. With the old tripod opneing and closing the legs was tiresome having to ensure all the locks were tight before adjusting the one required - that is no longer a problem. I primarily use this tripod for shooting wildlife with my 800mm attached and it provides excellent stability. My one grip is that is dosen't come with a center column or at least is not offered as a kit with a center column. Without this, carrying the lens and tripod connected on a hike is a little unwieldy and, even if never used to raise elevation, the center column is fantastic at providing a means to carry my set up more easily. If you plan on walking around with your gear on the tripod then the addition of a center column is strongly recommended. This is only a minor gripe however - this is a great tripod if a little costly (hence it didnt get 5 stars) but is a great piece of gear.

I use the big Gitzo mainly for wildlife and bird video acquisition using long still camera lenses on a Canon XL-1 camcorder, with a Jobu gimbal head. It is also used for still photography. The tripod is perfect for this purpose. The leg locks are easy to adjust, and lock and release easily. The tripod is very sturdy and seems to dampen vibrations very well. This is truly a quality product and with proper care, should last a long time, even with lots of use.
