If you like using Live View a lot or do a lot of videos you will like this product. It eliminates glare completely and I really like the diopter which means I don't have to take my glasses on and off. It attaches pretty simply but there there is no ability to attach a tripod plate to it, such as an Acra Swiss. There is a second 1/4 - 20 threaded socket in the mount but the nurled screw which attaches the Hoodman to the camera covers part of it up. However there is a bit of edge distortion looking through the eyepiece. When I tried focus on a subject through a 500 mm lens I ended up taking it off to get a real fine focus using the TTL viewfinder. In the end I'm consider it a useful addition to my stuff.

This is a great device when using the camera attached to a cage and mounted in a monopod, so you are in control. Of course, you can use it just with the camera but that wouldn't be so confortable for your arms. It fits my Nikon D7100 with a 3.2 in LCD screen and the good thing is that the eyepiece is totally adjustable. I use it mostly when shooting video, which reminds me when using conventional video cameras. The image quality is just great. For pictures, I use the camera in the conventional way, without this viewfinder. It is a personal taste only. One thing I've found a bit difficult: Due to I have to use glasses, even though it has an adjusting wheel, the little distance between my eye and my glasses blocks a little bit to see the REC (recording) indicator, which is located at the upper left corner. And this obligates me to reposition myself in order to see if this is active or stopped. Believe it or not, this little issue made me to lose a few great shots. It's not a big deal at all, but you have to be aware of this because many times you click twice to the recording button and not realized that you've turned it ON and OFF, if not checking through the eyepiece. Other than that, it's a really great device, The eyepiece is easily detachable for fast changes. The structure is metallic made but it looks fragile 'cause at the end there is ONE arm or stick, which holds the eyepiece to the base attached under the camera. I would say, it is one of the most fragile part of the camera so it has to be handled with care —as with all photographic stuff. I'd like to see a sturdier version in the future! Another important fact is that it is made in The United States…

This finder has three things that make it great: 1) fits around the view screen of the Nikon D800 withought blocking the buttons; 2) has a center line hole in line with the camera's tripod mount; 3) the Allen wrench has a slot on the finder.

The Hoodman Custom Finder Kit is easy to set up and use even if you use the system on different cameras as I do. But the neck strap is pretty much useless.

First, this is wonderfully made, with all the possible "issues" taken into account. The base is built by Custom Brackets, which is great, even having extensions so it won't shift. The eyepiece is totally adjustable, even fitting my Nikon D800E with a battery pack. It not only includes a small Allen wrench for adjustments, but provides a unique storage spot on the product! View is clear and sharp, and you can fine tune height and side to side parameters to make it fit perfectly and it stays there! Not heavy at all. It's easy to remove the eye piece and continue rapid shooting with only the base plate on the camera. I will use this for video, but even more for fine still work. With the D800E and I'm sure many others, you can see manual changes in exposure while shooting so you control the dynamic range. I've used the similar Zucata product which is more expensive, clumsier, heavier and much harder to use. This is as well made as any similar type adjustable product I've purchased in the last 10 years.
