I use the SX280 HS for family and travel photos. Should come in handy for foreign travel with carry-on luggage. 20X zoom is a real plus. 12 MP is plenty for most pics. GPS is convenient and seamless. The flash can be blocked from opening by fingers on the left hand requiring a power cycle. Additional batteries are relatively cheap.

The camera shuts down asking for a new battery whenever you try to zoom while making a movie. If you go to pictures mode the battery indicator shows it as full. We ordered this camera for my 7 year old son. He hased used our camera in the past and decided he could have one of his own. It has been 2 weeks since we received it and he knows how to do the basics: turn it on, take pictures, use the great zoom cability and review the pictures he has taken. We have not yet used the video camera portion yet.

I got this for Christmas and havent gotten to use all of the features yet but so far I love it. The quality of the images is excellent.

I used its earlier version SX260HS, even that has given me excellent results. And now SX280HS is even better. To get best results one should learn how to use different options given for all kind of photo needs. Great Zoom quality and excellent low light sharp pictures. Must have for world traveler and very easy to carry in the pocket. Battery life is not an issue for me. I always carry a spare battery. I will strongly recommend this.. Canon Brand is a big plus.

Bought this camera because I needed a pocket-sized camera with good zoom that I could take on horseback rides, traveling, etc. Was also interested in a good wide angle. Have had it a week, shot about 800 - 1000 shots and am so far very impressed by the camera's capabilities. It's very user-friendly, capable of delivering really nice photos at a longer focal length, and takes very good close-ups as well. All of this has been outdoors so far, so will be interested to see how it performs in low light situations. The battery life has been as expected -- other reviewers have covered that -- but have a couple back-ups on order so I will always have battery available. So far it looks like a winner!

I wanted a compact camera to suppliment my GoPro cameras that I use for my hiking and traveling. My requirements, in order of preference, were: excellent image quality, variety of imaging features, good zoom (at least 10x), HD video (1080p). The Canon SX280 met all those requirements. While there are a lot of menu and function features to navigate through, I was able to figure out the more-common and useful features within a few days of use - just in time for my trip to southern Utah. I was very pleased with the variety of exposure control (aperture priority, exposure priority, full manual, ISO control) as well as manual focusing, which is a surprising feature in a compact camera. The 20x zoom worked very well, even without a tripod, although I used a Slik Slim Pod monopod when possible. I was really impressed with the video stabilization. It made panning very smooth and tracked wildlife pretty well. Also, the zoom control during videos was smooth and variable. My only peeve is the battery life. I noted that when taking videos, the battery indicator would go into "warning" mode pretty early in use. When taking photos, I didn't notice a significant depletion. I did purchase a second battery, but I think that having three or four batteries would be prudent for extended trips (or at least a 12VDC car charger). The camera weighs a little more than most compacts (over 8 ounces) and will not fit in a pocket, but those are trade-offs that are worth the exchange for all the features this camera offers.
