Makes beautiful portraits. Beautiful grain structure. Only downside is that it does not like to be underexposed.

Amazing film. The grain is undetecable at 8x10 and the colors are rich & accurate.

This film has a great color range, for skin tones and I love it for urban and street work.

The speed (400 ISO) makes it possible to capture images in low-light situations. Enlargements up to 16x20 look great.

Since 1999, we have used Portra 400 NC for weddings, portraits, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other receptions, with various types of flash and under outdoor and window light. The film has produced excellent flesh tones, good tonal range, and fine detail in wedding gowns, cakes and other white and off-white items. Results have been consistent, We have occasionally used Fuji NPH (now Pro 400 H). which is a fine film, but we have returned to Portra 400 NC, and plan to keep using it for the above applications.

This film accurately represents the subject, especially if you are photographing people in formal portrait settings. However, be aware that using this in most any other situation may disappoint, as most people expect a picture to have more "color" than real-life. Unless you are taking formal wedding or other "high value" photos where color accuracy is more important than "Wow", you might want to consider Portra 400VC (Vivid Color).

Natural colors, fine grain and soft contrast. Excellent for outdoor photography.
Introduced in 1998, these four films shared breakthrough Single Channel Printing technology, employing the same dyes and couplers. The result:
•same spectral sensitivity and spectral-dye density across film speeds
•remarkably compatible final prints, no matter what combination of PORTRA Films shot: 120/220 and 35 mm formats, natural color an d vivid color, 160 and 400 speeds
