Amplifiers are designed to take an audio signal and boost it to an appropriate level for non-powered speakers. A receiver, on the other hand, adds additional functionality to switch between different sources, including video. Home theater receivers support surround sound profiles suited to movies and games.
What is an amplifier?
Audio devices like CD players or turntables output a low-power signal that you can connect to an amplifier. Home theater amplifiers are designed to amplify a line-level or phono-level signal to a power level that works for your desired speakers.
Because you can find and use speakers in a wide variety of sizes with different impedance levels, an amplifier is a must. You can use yours to output the right power levels without adding distortion or losing signal clarity. Many home theater amplifiers also include an equalizer to balance the sound profile to match the room, speakers, and your personal audio preferences.
What is a receiver?
A receiver is the control center of a home theater or hi-fi setup and often even contains an amplifier. Receivers can process a wide variety of signals depending on their features. Most receivers are designed to work with a line-level input from devices such as a CD player or turntable. It’s also common for receivers to have Bluetooth, Chromecast, or AirPlay connections to work with modern smartphones and computers.
Receivers designed for home theaters can process and pass-through a video signal. This means you can use them to connect multiple video sources to a TV without needing to change input sources.
You’ll also often find receivers with DTS and Dolby Digital capabilities, which use these signals to balance output between multiple speakers to create a surround sound experience. They may have 7.2-channel support, for instance, which indicates that they can handle a seven-speaker surround setup with two subwoofers.
