Not Too Bad for the Price

This product is not bad for the price! The only difference I see with this and the "real" Canon product is the felt flocking on the interior of the hood, which Canon adds to greatly reduce the possibility of glare to the lens from the plastic. This unline replacement product I feel would still have a small bit of reflection capable of bouncing off the bare plastic into the lens if the glare was quite strong. Overall, not a bad choice for the budget conscious photographer. You could line it yourself easily enough.

The Adorama lens hood is a great value above the Canon version

The Adorama lens hood is a great value above the Canon version. It fits the Canon 70-300 IS USM lens perfectly, locks in place securely and reverses on the lens for storage. It's plenty sturdy and represents a true value for the cost.

Perfect, as far as lens hoods go.

Using a lens hood means one less thing to worry about when constantly changing positions.

Great price!

Other than being a little difficult to attach and detach (tight threading) this is an awesome lens hood.

What's In A Name

For the difference in price between this and the namebrand I could purchase 5 'noname' lenshoods, of course when I've been out & about I've eyeballed other 'name' lenshoods other than the "emblazoned" name I don't see any difference

ET-65B lens cover

Very sturdy and good looking lens cover. It fits very tightly and I can access lens caps and filters with a tight fit. It should protect the front element very nicely.

Flimsy plastic but worth the price

Feels cheap and brittle compared to the real (Canon) thing, but fits the lens well and provides some protection against bumps. Good deal at this price.

Use this a lot

Easy to put on. More difficult to take off. You have to take it off the lens to stow. Rigid plastic does not bend. Does protect the lens and keep glare off of lens.

does not fit

This does not mount on to the lens at all. from reading the reviews it seems that the manufacturing is extremely inconsistant. some people say it fits, some say it fits too tight, min is too loose to mount up at all. waste of $$$.

Nice hood for the price

For the money, you can't go wrong with this hood. A must have on any lens to help protect it from those accidental BUMPS. It was a little finicky to get it put on my Canon 70-300 lens but once on, it was a solid tight fit with no stray light. I have had no problems with it and it has certainly saved my lens from those accidental bumps many times not to mention my pocketbook compared to the "CANON" brand hood. Great product for the buck Adorama!

Lens Hood

I would have bought the Canon Hood but it is not available from Canon (they do not have any in stock and this has been for months. I do not see any difference in hoods as this one serves the main purpose of keeping stray light or lens flare out. It is not to be used in a studion though and I would hope that everyone knows when using strobes you take the hood and filter off because you need all the light you can get.

OK for casual use.

Not as strong as the canon model. Mine fits well forward fot taking pictures. Does not fit easily backwards. This is OK for casuls users. If you are going to use the hood regularly, get the canon.

Does the job at a third of the price

As others have posted, this hood has a very tight fit straight out of the box; it needs a few uses and a little fine grit sand paper on the inner ring to make it more user friendly. The plastic is a lower grade than the Canon model, but the price is less than 1/3 of the Canon. The hood does its job as it should, no problems with it in use.

A dollar saved is a dollar earned

Adorama lens hoods do the job at a fraction of the cost of a camera manufacturer's replacement lens hood. If I need to replace a lens hood the Adorama replacement is money in my pocket.

Just what I expected for Adorama

The main purpose of a hood is to prevent stray light from entering the lens through the side of the lens. Light from just outside the photo border can still enter the lens, bouncing inside the barrel and reflecting off the lens surfaces to reach the image sensor indirectly. a lens hood also protects the lens of your camera. It can prevent minor damage such as a fingerprint on the lens, or major damage such as breaking the glass of the lens. Lens hoods stick out from the lens, so unwanted scratches and dirt on the lens is greatly reduced because the lens becomes harder to reach.

Don't waste your money

DOES NOT fit the 70-300 IS USM. Not saying it fits poorly - too loose, too tight, etc - it won't go on the lens at all. For all the carping about the exhorbitant cost of Canon hoods, I guess there's a reason they still sell them, huh? Get the Canon product or a screw-on rubber hood, but don't waste your money on this one.

does exactly what was expected

I have read other reviews of this product with people saying how hard it was to put on and and there was some play in it once attached. I have had none of these issues and found it very secure and easy to put on the lens

Works okay for the money

After reading other reviews I knew not to expect too much from these knockoff lens hoods. I don't mind that it's plastic, it just needs to do three things: attach easily, stay put, detach easily. It needs to do these things in both shooting mode and storage mode. After some tweaking, it does do these things well. The tweaking consisted of shaving off excess plastic left over from the moulding process. Once I did that (if you're patient and handy it should take you 15-30 minutes), this item works fine. I also ordered the similar generic hoods for my Canon 10-22 and my 28-105. My experience with the 10-22 hood is similar to above. The Hood for the 28-105, however, couldn't be made to work properly. Recommended if you are willing to save money in exchange for a little effort.

Functional, but too tight to mount

The hood is functional once mounted (thus the two stars), but is difficult to mount (too tight) and could potentially damage the lense AF mechanism if not careful when mounting. I remove the lock from the lense and extend the lense to hold with my hands to mount the hood.

I read all the complaints that it was a composite and not metal, but I have slammed it pretty hard against surfaces and it has held up great.

Save a Lens - Save a Photo - Save $$

My Canon 50D is packed and ready for action. Whether it's a little league game or a night at a concert, the camera is there. Inevitably, there's a great shot reduced to rubbish by lens flare when you don't have a hood in place. The Adorama-branded lens hood is every bit the product the Canon-branded hood is. Save your lens. Save your photos. Save a few bucks. Accessories are big business. Save where you can without sacrificing quality at Adorama.

OK but not great

Well the price dropped ten bucks since I purchased this product a week ago so for [$] I might feel better about it. The basic function of the hood for me is to protect the lens from damage and to keep water spots off of the filter. So i guess it fills the bill. It has a very flimsy plastic feel. It mounts easily to the lens.

It's a little large.

It shades the lens from side light and makes the lens look a lot larger than it is. good thing it's made from plastic.

About Adorama Lens Hood for Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS

One of the most important accessories for each lens you own. A lens hood provides multiple functions: it shades the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality; in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens; and it protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles.
