Convenience to Necessity overnight

When I get back from a shoot I use the one-touch download for my USM SSD then work from it saving the keepers to my WorkStation as well as the edited photos to it and my NAS's RAID-1 2TB SSHDs, it will be years before I need to weed out some of the old photos and it's fast enough fast enough to pull clients old photos into the queue on my WorkStation's SSD when needed. With the price of Solid State Drives this NAS has quickly gone from convenience to necessity.

Easy Back-Ups of (RAW) Photos

I installed a couple 2TB Seagate hi-brids (SSHD), initialized them as Master Boot Record ((MBR) with the 2TB limit)) for backward compatibility, set the array for RAID-1 (image mirroring) and made it my B: drive for a 2nd. set of back-ups. Now when I take the 1TB (USM) SSD that I make back-ups of my Hyper-Drive in the field I can delete old photos.

Great local server. Crummy cloud server.

Despite a good number of not-so-good reviews, I went for this STBN100 NAS anyway. Historically, I've had pretty good luck with Seagate so I leaned in the direction of getting a NAS from Seagate. I got it, installed two 3TB hard drives and put it on my network. At first, I had trouble initializing the second drive. It just wouldn't let me no matter what I did. Then, I remembered that I should check for firmware updates. I found updated firmware and installed it. It was pretty easy; you need two different files. After the firmware update, most functions started working correctly. I set up shared folders for my music, pictures, backups and family members. I was able to add users and groups and configure access to each shared folder the way I wanted. It's a really sweet server. Next, I set up some directories for the "private cloud" services to access some of my folders from the Internet. This is where my experience went sour. Seagate uses a service called "Tappin" for global access of the files. Directions are murky. Setup is clunky. It only half works. And what does work is really slow. I attempted to share my music and pictures folders for remote access. I was able to access the music folder (although at very low rates). I couldn't access the pictures folder to save my life. I even turned off sharing on the music folder in the hope that the picture folder would show up. Somehow, I was still able to access the unshared music folder and still not see the pictures folder. What's up with that? To add insult to injury, the Tappin service is a "pay for" service after you use your initial three free years. Maybe they'll get it working in three years. For now, I'm shutting down my near worthless "private cloud." Still, the STBN100 is a great local server. For cloud services, it is not ready for consumers.
