Canon's new EOS 30D brings proven EOS technology to a new level, giving photographers an unbeatable photographic experience. The EOS30D incorporates a host of new features with Canon's highly acclaimed 8.2 megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC II Image Processor. The EOS 30D includes enhanced operational features such as a new 2.5 inch LCD monitor, true spot metering, a durable new shutter mechanism and Canon's Picture Style feature, all in an sturdy, magnesium-clad body. With all these new features the EOS 30D is trulyperfection, refined.  Canon's large-area CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers the most pixels in its class. This APS-C size sensor (22.5 x 15.0mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length. The EOS 30D has an extensive ISO range (from 100 to 1600 plus ISO 3200 in extended mode), which is selectable in 1/3-stop increments. The sensor features a newly developed set of narrow-gap microlenses and noise reduction circuits to improve performance at high ISO values, and optimized photodiode configurations for improved performance at all ISO values. This results in larger, clearer, sharper and more detailed photographs right from the start.  The EOS 30D is one of the fastest cameras Canon has ever produced. Incorporating the fast operation of the EOS 20D, the 30D allows users to specify high-speed 5 fps or a new low-speed 3 fps continuous shooting for more controlled shooting and/or to save space on the CF card. And it can capture up to 30 JPEG and 11 RAW (or 9 RAW + JPEG) files in one burst. Whether it's the 0.15-second startup time, the high-speed mirror drive, the nearly instant 65-millisecond shutter release lag time or the predictive AF focusing at speeds up to 5.0 frames per second, the EOS 30D will amaze and delight photographers who don't want to wait for their camera when they're ready to shoot.  The EOS 30D incorporates Canon's Picture Style settings, which simulate the characteristics of different film styles, allowing photographers to customize their shooting to their personal taste or needs. These include Standard, for punchy, print-from-the-camera color, Portrait, for softer, more natural skin tones, Landscape, for vivid blues and greens and overall sharpness, and Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome, which can be customized to emulate color filters with black and white film.  At the request of many users, the EOS 30D adds a spot metering function that meters roughly 3.5% of the center of the image. This new metering function, in addition to Canon's impressive evaluative, center-weighted average and partial metering modes, gives the photographer even more choices for custom-tailored shooting.

Great camera! Its a semi-pro camera that is built to last for a long time! Controls just feel so right and it is very easy to make adjustments while looking through the viewfinder. The 5fps make sports photography a blast! Does reasonable well in the higher ISO ranges, I have had it up to about 800 or so and they dont seem to have much noise (grain) at all. I have had this camera for about 3 weeks and have done about 3000-3500 pictures already with it. I would take a EOS camera over the newer Rebel series any day of the week. Great Camera!

i have the xti before and upgrade to this, at first i wasnt happy bec i get better pics on my xti, but after couple of days, im lovin it!

pro camera

So far, this is the closest I've gotten to purchasing a professional quality DSLR - such as a 5D or 1D. I'm really enjoying it so far. It feels great in my hands; and the controls are very accessible compared to say, a Rebel. I was concerned that going below 10MP would be an issue for me, but it turns out the difference is not significant enough to really bother me. Unless you rely heavily on cropping pictures down drastically, it's not any sort of issue.

I am starting to wonder if there is burned out pixel though, or if I just have dust on the sensor. That's so far the only concern of any kind that I've had with this body. Definitely a valuable purchase, and it will go many miles in my portrait/event/wedding photography business.

Purchased to complement 40D and avoid excessive lens changing during photo projects. Works like a charm.

Great bargain on used XXX

I use the camera by showing all the landscapes when I travel. The thing that is great about this camera is the fast shutter speed. I could capture things that I couldn't with a regular camera. The thing that is not so great is that this is the body only. I know that most people will buy separate lens either way, but there are also some people who are just a noob at dslr.

I upgraded to a 30D quite a while back from a Rebel XT. Really, the 40D isnt worth the extra money from this in my opinion. Awesome camera, durable, easy to use, and fast. Doenst get much better.

GREAT Camera

My first DSLR, very happy!
Read the manual before trying it, and try to have a basic understanding of photography before going for the purchase. I upgraded from canon point and shoot S3IS and found the transition fairly easy

Very Happy

I bought this camera body in Dec. 2006.  I photograph models on a regular basis. Within a little over a year I have shot over 200,000 images with this camera which exceeds the 100,000 shutter rating.  Camera more than exceeds my expectations.

Recently on a trip to Alaska to photo the Brown Bears in KatMai National Park, The camera got very heavy after walking quite a distance.  
 As we sat (8 people) photoing the Bears, My Canon 30D was without question the loudest in the group.  I got some stares from others but no comments.  
  My XTI is quite and does just as good

I upgraded from the Canon 300 which I believe was canons first shot at a DSLR for less than [$].I used that camera for 4 years and it took great pictures.After retiring I decieded to get more involved in photography and beings I already had a couple lenses for the Canon I decieded to go with the 30D.That was the best choice I could have made!It is much easier to use, the pictures are so much better and my time on touching up the pictures I take in photshop has been cut in half.Excellent camera and I would recommend it to anyone.

Excellent Camera

I use this camera for business and as a hobby.  I purchased it last april and have taken over 10,000 images.  Other than cleaning the sensor about 10 times I never had an issue with this camera.  I have a 10d as a back-up which gets little usage.  I guess Canon will replace it in the fall and I will use that opportunity to buy another one at a good discount.

GREAT CAMERA!!!

My first step into the digital image world.  I had 3 EOS1V's and 1 EOS3 and a LARGE amount of lenses.  Unfortunately so lowly thief decided he needed them more than I did.  So I am basically starting all over.  I stepped into the 30D upon the recommendations of 3 professional photographers and all three are 100% right.  Great feel, superb action and unlimited creativity are right at the tip of your index finger.

I purchased body w/17-85IS lens.  It was my first DSLR purchase. The camera is an amazing machine.  Everything is calibratible. It is a camera that a beginner can hone to a professional instrument.  Very well constructed.  I purchased this unit over the Rebel XTI for body construction and rear command dial.

Well Balanced

So far, a good experience. Easy to use for those either familiar with Canon's or the XT and XTi. Feels sturdy and solid in your hand. The biggest gripe is the on/off button is not well thought out. Shooting outdoors in the cold while wearing gloves, makes using the switch difficult. Should have been a simple push button, or lever/switch like on other Canon's.

A fine upgrade from the XTi.

We are happy with this model.  It is definitely a step up from basic models.  Get a good lens to compliment it and it won't let you down.  And, you can shoot all day with the same camera batteries.  We like the extra battery pack for balance and a comfortable grip.  A good camera!

Canon EOS-30D

I love this camera! It has the perfect amount of megapixels for its sensor size. It is a great upgrade from the Digital Rebel, but if you can't afford the 1Ds, it's a reasonable price.

Excellent Camera for the money

I like the construction of this camera, quality built. Pictures I have taken so far came out great. Ready for a trip to Europe this summer with more memory cards coming in a few days!

The menus are easily accessible and easy to navigate.  The picture functions provide a lot of custom flexibility, with a way to return to default with our resetting the whole camera.  The camera body itself can be a bit bulky if you are not use to this type of camera body.  Otherwise, this camera is very well built.

Wow.  this camera is everything and more

This is a excelent camera that won't dissapoint you. Oficially is a semi-pro camera, but a lot of professional use it everyday because of the great results that it can produce. In the right hands, the 30D delivers as good images as it gets.

If you are choosing between the Canon Rebel XTi (400D) and the 30D, get the 30D: is more rugged, solid, durable and the more intuitive interface allows you to make changes faster and easier before that magic moment is gone forever. The 10 Megapixels of the XTi won't give you better images and just will fill your memory cards faster.

If you have a 20D, then the upgrade may be worth it, may be not: with the 30D we basically are talking about a bigger and better quality screen (making it a nicer camera to work with, believe me), a spotmeter (very handy), a bigger buffer (allowing more photos in burst mode) and you will have Picture Styles (a feature inherited from it's bigger brother, the Canon 5D, giving you greater control over the fine details of the images). Your call.

If you are considering the Nikon D200, both (Canon 30D and Nikon D200) are very capable cameras, try both at a local store and decide witch interface feels better for you. For me, the better image quality (less noise) of the 30D in low light conditions was the deciding factor. However, if you already have Canon or Nikon lenses, then your decision is already made: stay with the brand you are using, because the differences between the 30D and the D200 are not enought to justify a jump to the other side of the fence.

If you are waiting for the 40D, it's your call, but it may be months away and it will be more expensive, while you may get now the 30D, an excelente camera that you will love (I am writing this in march, 2007).

Warning: The 30D is so good that you will need good lenses to unleash it's full potencial, otherwise the lenses will limit the image quality. The kit lenses are OK if you are learning, but trust me: you will notice the difference when you buy better lenses. You may consider the Canon 50mm f/1.8 EF lens: is light, a bargain at only  US$80.00, excelent optics and superb for portraits and low light. If you have a bigger budget, the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM EF-S lens is a great choice (about US$1,100.00, an outstanding zoom lens with exquisite optics and Image Stabilisation, not to be confused with the lower quality Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S kit lens!)

Bottom line: You can't go wrong with the Canon 30D! I love mine. Highly recomended!

Simply an excelent camera!

Updgraded from a DRebel, and hands down I'd recommend the 30D to a friend.  Much heavier duty construction, big LCD, more AF points is a big plus too.  Also really like having the spot-meter and mirror lock up.  Everything about it is a big step up from my Rebel.

Stellar Upgrade

I love the 30D so much I have two of them and usually carry both each with a different lens. It has great features and the feel of the 5D without the cost. The 30D feels soooo much better in hand than the smallish and cheap feeling Rebels. Excellent for wildlife, action, macros, landscape, etc. I have taken mine all over the world without disappointment. The batteries last an amazingly long time. The setting are so much easier to change & adjust than with the new Rebel XTi.

So good I have two

I really do love this camera. This is my 1st dslr and was intimidating at first, but if you do your homework it can produce awesome pictures. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is the price. There are now higher resolution cameras for lower prices, although they lack the rugged build.

Wish it had dust prevention for sensor, other than that it is a great camera.

switched from fuji s2 and nikon d70 to the eos 30d. this camera (w/ battery pack) feels great in my hands. controls are easy. this is a very versatile camera. works great in the studio, iso 1600/3200 grain is very fine textured and easy to handle in ps. 3 - 5 fps makes it good for action also. i use it for portraits/weddings. looking forward to my next 30d body

The DSLR i've been waiting for

My 20D wore out so I called [...] and bought the 30D.  I tried going back to my D60 backup, but the controls on the new cameras are so much more convenient, I couldn't stand using my old D60! The 30D claims a longer shutter life of 100,000 cycles.  That isn't that much longer than my 20D lasted, but every bit helps.  Having to buy a new camera every year gets expensive, but the cameras are getting cheaper.  I hate the big new display.  I thought it would be great, as I have eye troubles.  The older ones give an accurate display if you tip them a little, but the 30D is never accurate!  You get the same, bright useless view from all angles.  However, expose it right and you have a good picture.  The built in flash rarely exposes right, nor does my 550ex.  The TTL is bound and determined not to over expose and makes the pictures too dark.  I almost always manually expose with flash and usually without the flash.  Most of my shots are with studio strobes.  NOT having eye-controlled focus is great.  Autofocus acquires quicker without it and you can easily hold the camera over a crowd for a quick shot.  Low-light performance is amazing.  Grain is very good at ISO1600.  Use that with a stabilized lens and get some great shots in places you can't use a flash.  There are controls to modify the nature of the pictures.  I don't use them and never will.  You can do all those things with the computer if you aren't fond of reality.I had the 20D rebuilt.  My wife retired her D30 and swiped the 30D.  She loves it and she loves the fact she can shoot for days without changing a battery.

My wife won't give it back.

This camera has most of the advanced features of the 5D and less than half the price.  Metal frame and excellent focusing are just some of the treats.  [...]
