A Qualified Success

I bought the Zacuto Studio Baseplate to add support for my long telephoto lenses on my Canon C100 Mk II while mounted on a tripod. The idea was to not put a large strain on the C100's lens mount. it worked really well with my Canon 35-350 f3.5-5.6 L lens. This is an older L lens that I have had for years. It's great when you don't want to be changing lenses all the time, and being a full frame lens, is very good on the S35 sensor of the C100 on the normal to telephoto end. However, the Sigma 150-500 lens that I also use is significantly larger. The foot on the tripod collar is mostly flush with the bottom of the rails, so there is no way to support the lens with just the studio base plate. I'm looking at the Zacuto Gorilla Baseplate for C300 to add enough height to be able to support the really big Sigma telephone zooms. That's another $160 that I wasn't planning on spending. There is no question that the Zacuto tripod support items are top notch and well thought out, and the prices reflect this. If you care about your equipment and your results and you need the best, then I fully recommend the Zacuto line. If you are a little strapped for cash, or are an occasional shooter, maybe something a little less pricey will suffice.

About Zacuto Z-CSB Studio Baseplate

The Zacuto C100/C300/C500 Studio Baseplate with 12" (30.48 cm) Rods is designed specifically for the Canon EOS C100/C300/C500 camera. It is exceptionally flat which helps to keep the center of gravity quite low. This baseplate features a pair of 0.59" (15 mm) rods that are 12" (304.8 mm) long running through the length of the baseplate. You can quickly reposition the rods for various lens lengths by loosening the 2 levers, one on each side of the baseplate.

On each side of the baseplate there is also a set of 0.59" (15 mm) lightweight holes. The side holes take 0.59" (15 mm) female rods that are locked with Allen screws. This gives you a virtually unlimited amount of mounting options. With these side holes, you have the option of turning the baseplate into a cage configuration. You can even mount a Zwiss Plate with professional batteries on the side of the baseplate when shooting on a tripod for better balance. When not using a cage configuration, the side holes can be used for an EVF, Zacuto articulating arms, rods and more. The baseplate also has standard 1/4" 20 and 3/8" 16 holes on the bottom for mounting the rig onto a tripod.

The C300 Studio Baseplate attaches to the camera with 3/8" 16 and 1/4" 20 screws. This Baseplate is perfect for a rig like the C100/C300/C500 Stinger or an advanced tripod rig with rods extending at the back for external power.
