Questions & Answers

Shopper : will this version work on a Macbook pro version OS X 10.6.8 ? If not what is a better laptop for Lightroom version 5 ?Thomas R : I have no experience with a MacBook Pro. I am using a Dell laptop with Windows 8. Sorry I could not be more helpful. WALTER R : I'm a Windows user but packaging on this specifically mentions both 10.6.8 and 10.7 for Mac.STEPHEN R : Yes, LR 4 should work on Macbook pro version OS X 10.6.8.
Shopper : what happens in a couple of weeks when LR5 comes out?GLENN P : V5 is now out for download. if you have been using the beta version you do not have to uninstall it. Photos in V4 can be sync into V5.DAVID M : You buy the new one and use it old files will still be there in the new oneATIF P : None of the new camera and lens profiles will be added to existing versions of Lightroom. So if you buy a new camera or a lens that has recently been announced or will be announced in the future, you will have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 to be able to open up RAW files or correct lens issues via the Lens Corrections module. Adobe will not deliver those updates to Lightroom 4. If you do not care about new cameras and lenses, then you can obviously continue to use your existing Lightroom version. Meanwhile, Lightroom 4.4 seems to be pretty solid overall.
Shopper : Does this version have an Inversion Feature to convert Negatives to Digital Pictures?RONN B : Sorry, it does not.THOMAS N : Yes, it is possible, using the Curves option. In the Tone Curve panel of the Develop module click on the point curve icon to switch to the point curve: In the drop-down next to the point curve icon, choose Linear. This will remove all points from the curve: Now take the point at the top right corner of the curve and pull it all the way down to the bottom of the chart. (It may fight you — it helps to pull it part way, let go, then pull it further.) Then take the bottom left corner point and pull it all the way up: That’s it! If you accidentally end up with extra points on your curve, click and drag them all the way off the chart, or switch the drop down back to Linear and start over. If you plan to invert many images, save this tone curve as a preset: click on the + at the top of the Presets panel on the left, give it a name (“Invert”) and check only Tone Curve. Next time you want to invert an image, just click on the Invert preset in your User Presets folder.GENE R : No, it doesn't. I checked 2 books that made no reference to it and in poking around LR4 I had seen nothing about it. I do my inversions in Photoshop.

User friendly w/ great functionality

I use this software to make minor edits to my images, such as adjusting levels. It's so easy to use and just gives my images that extra pop. I was disappointed that I couldn't use v.5 with my Macbook, which I only purchased in 2011, but for now, v.4 will suffice, as I don't tend to use very tech-whizz functions.

I love it!

I just love Lightroom 4! It`s so easy to use and way faster than photoshop. I understand I can´t use it for more complicated things, but I CAN do 99% of the editing in LR 4! ANd for that price- can`t get any better than that!

Way Better than Lightroom 3!

Advanced Ametuer of over 30 years experience with a camera. This program is Wonderful and way better than my old copy of Adobe Lightroom 3! The controls have changed quite a bit, so it took a few minutes to get situated; but those few minutes spent were well worth it! My work flow has speeded up and my photographs are coming out amazing!

Almost perfect

Experienced Photoshop user, now learning Lightroom 4. LR4 has a "million" options that are not always easy to find. The book gets you off and running. As the e-version is searchable, going back for second a look is easy. The book leaves out small details often. Had to use other sources (on-line) to find out what menu options were used for.

Great Upgrade from 3.6

I use this product for wedding, family, portrait, model and special event photography. This is a great upgrade with additional features I like. It has also cut down on post processing time a lot. I would definitely recommend it to any beginner, intermediate or professional.

Fantastic Upgrade!

I use LR4 primarily for business purposes and find it very useful to streamline color batch processing/color editing. I normally work with it in conjunction with Adobe CS6 and find it very easy to switch back and forth between both programs.

Widely acclaimed, Support lacking

Adobe could learn a lot about user interface from Picasa. LR offers more post processing options but it has an arcane, difficult and buggy cataloging function. If you go to Adobe support be prepared to spend much more time verifying your purchase and identity than getting help for you problem. Skip the tech chat since you will be shuttled through something like a phone tree only to be told that you should go look for an answer on the forums. Also check into their policy on installation on ALL of your machines from a purchased DVD copy.

A must have

There have been some great improvements since LR3. For Windows users this is really the only game in town. For Mac, there's Aperture. After using both, LR4 has better controls and output but Aperture still does workflow better. A must have for those who prefer to shoot in RAW to get the best results.

Nice upgrade to LR 3

I would call myself a serious amateur and I use Lightroom to process a lot of family photos as well as some more artistic work. I like the sliders and find the updated interface a welcome improvement over LR3. The ability to non-destructively crop, adjust, and even create virtual copies of a photo is very usefull and efficient. I would like to have the ability to turn on some contextual help for sliders and tools within the interface. A brief blurb on what Saturation or Vibrance, etc. effects would lessen the learning curve. Overall I'm very happy with this product and hope to find it made ever more powerful with each succeeding version.

Skipped a release, Glad I waited.

Combined with an upgrade to Win Pro 8, 64bit has made this a very good investment. RAW data processing made quicker, easier and more accurate.

It's Changed Our Photography

I gave Lightroom 4 to my wife for her birthday. It's changed her photography dramatically by making the skies in her images come alive. I've watched how dull, gray skies have turned into dramatic ones that literally pop because of the gradient filter. Each day she discovers something new and wonderful about this program. It's made such a difference in her photography that I'll soon be buying my own copy.

This is a great product.

I am just getting started using Lightroom 4 and so far find it extremely easy to learn and use. The correction of problems in exposure, contrast, color, and other problems is excellent.

Great software for photographers!

First time doing post processing and Lightroom is the way to go! Nothing can beat the control you have in this software. And like the pros say, 90% of the work is done in LR. The remaining 10% kicks in only if you need to do creative and fanciful stuff to your pictures. For most casual photographers, this is the only software you need.

LR4 Review

LR 4's exposure slider was changed. It used to have a more natural feel, functioning like the camera's exposure. But, now it is more like brightness, and there are three new sliders which substitute for what it used to do. They are highlights, shadows, and whites, and they provide very precise control that didn't exist before. This is great, but I still would like the old exposure and brightness and simply would have added the new sliders for more detailed precision. You can still go back to the LR3 method - in Camera Calibration (at the bottom) select Process, 2010. Two very nice new features are white balance and noise adjustments in the brush and gradient tools. There is also video adjustment, but I haven't used it yet. Overall, for the price, it is certainly worth an upgrade or outright purchase. It's probably the most powerful RAW editing software and file management system, and it is very intuitive.
