Beware: most iPhone apps simply ignore the external screen altogether and it will stay black. Additionally, not all videos are allowed to play through the adapter. Apple has stringent policies on iTune-based content. If all you need is to browse the web, play most videos, or make presentations, then you are in luck(1). You may need 3rd party software listed in the "Best Uses" section. (1) The listed software are blessed on the App Store and do not involve jailbreaking your phone, which commonly revokes your warranty.
