Excellent investment
I bought this hood more than a year ago for my Canon 500 mm F4 lens because the original hood got badly damaged and is absurdly expensive to replace. I am very pleased with how this hood keeps rain off the front element, and protects the lens from bumps and scratches when I am carrying my tripod on trails with close branches. I leave the hood on my lens all the time and, when traveling, pack the lens in my rigid suitcase by covering both ends with bubble wrap. One minor issue is that the stiff metal band at the front tends to push through and tear the nylon cloth, but this can be dealt with using pliers to bend the end of the metal inward a bit. In summary, I prefer this soft hood compared with the hard, original one.

Very happy with this product
I have been using this product for over one year. I bought it primarily because it can be packed flat, and I really did not think I would use if for local shooting. In short, the OEM's pretty but scratchable hood went back in its box and has not been seen since. Although not any lighter (maybe even a smidge heavier),this hood does everything the OEM hood does and is easier to use. You adjust it once - read the instructions about how to get the right tension - then it snaps on and off and reverses without having to fiddle with a screw. You do not need to unbuckle and rebuckle the straps after the initial fitting to your lens. It stays put and properly aligned at all times. It is stiff and stable enough to easily support the weight of the camera and lens. I store my lens vertically mounted on this hood. The best thing about this hood is that it does not scratch and it offers a little cushioning/protection for the lens. You really appreciate that when you accidentally bump it into a rock or something when you are out on a shoot.

Works, but too bulky and expensive
I thought about making a hood like this once because transporting the hood for the 500mmf/4 on planes and in a packed backpack is difficult. The idea would be to have a lightweight device that folds flat or rolls tight and does NOTHING MORE than be a hood. This product weighs as much as the hood it replaces. Although I could lay it flat in a suitcase, once I have it at a photo destination there's no place to put it ... won't fit in any camera bag, is bulkier than the Canon hood when on the lens, takes longer to mount. The ribs to allow standing the lens on the hood are really unnecessary.
