durability

i have had a pair of these headphones since they first came out, and after fours years of use they still feel great. they have taken some wear and tare when i first got them i would forget they were on my head (because they're so comfy) and walk away from my desk and they would fall on the floor, despite this they still work years later. however they do over time begin to collapse around the third year of use the domes started to cave in the fabric and cushioning around the ear is also starting to g. the audio quality has not very noticeably decreased but it has a little bit. in the end i'm glad that i purchased them once, i'm also glad they brought these back into production so i can buy a second pair.

Amazing Clarity

Every sound is crisp, clean, and has a great spatial distinction. Certain songs just don't sound the same without these. These are very light, I find them comfortable, but I can see how, on a small headed person, there could be an issue. I will wear them in the winter as earmuffs, although they are almost ridiculously large. Also, they are very very durable. I have had mine for over two years; only a small dent in one side, cosmetic stuff. The cord is very long and sheathed in a high-quality synthetic material; I never worry about it breaking or fraying. Great for gaming and music. These headphones are open-air, so sound leaks in and out, and bass doesn't have much of a "kick".

Don't waste your money

If your head isn't shaped like a bowling ball forget these. You can't adjust them to fit. They look impressive out of the box but I couldn't use them. There's no adjustment to bring the sides closer together. Now I have to go through the process of sending them back and finding something else.

Great Can at a great price

I own these, the close back model A-700 and AKG 702s. If the AKGs get a 98%, these get a 95-96% at 1/3 the cost. Great sounding comfortable cans at any price. Remember that the open cans are more responsive, less bass and let the sounds in and out. I prefer them for accuracy and lack of heat.

A true redefinition of Audio

This is trully a great headphone that I have used. The MS-1 I have been using so far seems completely colored and muddled after I listened to these phones. I am yet to audition a Reference phone, so I really cannot be sure which is the correct sound when it comes to MS-1 and AD700. Lack of bass is immediately noticeable. But using a EQ does reduce it to some extent, though not up to my expectation. Looking forward to next series of Audio Technica headphones!

Best audiophile entrance product!

When getting into the hifi scene, the ATH-AD700 was my first choice. The pricing was right and the reviews of the product were good, so I set out to get a pair for myself to try. Sound: The ATH-AD700 is a great pair of headphones. The sound is clear, crisp and controlled. The bass is tight and enunciated. Its not powerful or gives you that kick, but the precision is very present and punchy. It is not excessive nor muddy but clear. The sound stage is very airy and open (its an open-air headphone...) The mid-range on these are amazing for what they are. The mid range and up is very clear and somewhat bright but not fatiguing. Very good sound. Will please anyone except people looking for a strong bass presence. Comfort: Extremely comfortable. I have a smallish head and these are huge, but they fit ever so comfortably. They sit on my head very very lightly and you do not need to adjust. They cover a large portion of you ear and more. They feel like over-sized soft earmuffs. I really recommend these to people starting off in the headphone hifi scene! They are a great first product and I still use them from time to time after 4 years. I dropped them once and the right side became imbalanced... Had to get that fixed.

Possibly the best entry-level audiophile headphone in it's class

Sound: Very detailed and accurate, the AD-700 satisfies those looking for an airy soundstage and quick details that allow for a more concentrated listen than most sets. The Bass while not powerful is ever present and punchy. The mid-range shines on this set and lends to a very musical sound. The treble is rather bright but not siblant, this being said, they may leave some users fatigued after moderate listening sessions. Design: Extremely comfortable, can be worn for what seems to be an infinite amount of time in a room of a comfortable temperature. I can't imagine these being as fitting on very small heads though, and the build quality probably won't allow for too much abuse, I've already dented one of the grills to no consequence other than cosmetics. All this being said, if proper care is taken, I don't see how these wouldn't last a very long time, the cable seems of a high quality. Being an entry level consumer minded set, these will be easily driven out of any sound card or stereo while miniature MP3 players (e.g. Sansa Clip) will leave it a bit starved in my experiences

Surround Sound Earphones

These were my first "audiophile" grade headphones, and it opened a doorway to a whole world of high quality music that has since changed my whole outlook on listening to music. These lightweight headphones are an incredible deal for their quality. It's comparable to listening an entire surround sound system. Because of their open frame the sound stage is incredibly wide and large and there is little to no pressure on the ears. It's a good thing they're comfortable because this preservation of spacial information really helps you find things in your music you never knew was there. I would recommend these to anyone interested in entering the world of audio the way it was meant to be heard, or any competitive gamer even. These are highly recommended for competitive gaming whereas they afford you a leg up on the competition because you are much more aware of the "world" around you. Please keep in mind that these are open air style: The backs of the drivers are exposed so there is sound leakage. A quiet room is the best for these, whereas people can here what you're listening to to a small degree, and you can certainly hear them.

What I think of my ATH-AD700

I was very impressed with the packaging. It looks like they took some time and thought into it. It wasnt just headphones thrown in a box. The comfort seemed nice, and I was overalled pleased. The only thing after a few weeks of use. I started noticed I was getting a neck ache. Being I use my headphones for playing games, ventrillo, and listening to music. It seemed the bulkiness of them were taking a toll on my neck. I had to take a few min rest periods through out my gaming to stop my neck from hurting. Being you cant adjust them and they just sit on your head i feel that could of been one of the issues. But overall this is a great product. My ears never sweat, the audio quality was excellent. I would recommend these if you can get use to having a bulky thing on top of your head. Thanks.. Satisified Customer :)

Great Value, Highly Recommended

From Japan come these nice headphones for the money that reproduce your music, movies, and games in higher fidelity. They are very comfortable and sort of "float" on your head instead of clamping down like some other headphones. These headphones have a great soundstage, open, airy, and clear sound and very balanced - no boosted bass and have very slight treble boost that makes the higher frequencies bright. These will not make the treble nasally or harsh like a lot of other headphones, or will they give you bass that you feel more than you hear. The bass these 'phones have is fast, tight, and clear, and is in enough quantity, it does not stick out or overtake the other frequencies. This is definitely not a bass-lover's headphone, but they are not lacking either. Another way I could put it is that the bass is flush with the rest of the frequencies. The midrange, where vocals and violins and lot of other voices occur, is warm and slightly energetic. It, too, is flush with the rest of the frequencies and does not stick out much. The high frequencies are bright and sparkly, and may be fatiguingly bright for some before the first hundred or so hours of use, after which they mellow out a bit. These headphones are also not very forgiving of a recording's deficiencies, and you will hear it all if your music is low bitrate mp3 or poorly mastered, otherwise, they will sound fantastic and rather natural. Overall, the headphones excel with most genres, and if you are looking for a great headphone for classical or jazz music without spending on something like expensive german studio monitors and matching headphone amplifier, I promise these will not disappoint in the least. The AD700's especially shine with pianos in my opinion. Large-scale classical works do not become congested with these headphones, unlike with most others. They have a massive separation of sound with incredible width, height, and plenty of depth and precise placement of sounds, perfect for movies and games. The AD700's do not sound thick or thin - music flows out of the headphones effortlessly like water. They sound like they are "light on their feet." Also, these headphones are open-back, and will not provide any isolation from your environment, which is part of how they achieve their incredible sound. They come with a 10-foot cable, gold-plated 3.5mm plug, and a screw-on 1/4" gold-plated adapter. They are very efficient and do not require a headphone amplifier like some other hifi headphones. Need some good headphones for Counter-Strike? Here they are. These excel with Metallica as well. ;D
