Questions & Answers

Shopper : is this arca swiss the new z1+ version?ANDREW R : No
Jim K : I lost a set screw. Are they universal?Ronald D : Most any camera shop has a replacement , even adorama.
GARY F : I was wondering just how quick the release is. I have a manfrotto ballhead with the flip lock. Does this type detach just as quickly as a flip lock? What are some benefits to this design over a flip? Thanks!BRIAN F : The knob release is not quite as quick as a flip lock. But it's still really easy and quick to twist the knob and remove the camera body, either with a plate or an L-bracket. You would really have to be a specialist to notice, i.e. a sports photographer or some other professional. I have an RRS ball head with a flip lock and I don't really notice any major time issues. The pro of this release is that it is much harder to accidentally trigger the release. With a flip lock, if you somehow caught your sleeve on the lever, you could release the lock and your camera and lens would go tumbling down. Much less likely to happen with a twist lock. Hope this helps!DONALD B : It is not as quick as the flip type. The advantage, for those who prefer this, is that it can be seen as more stable, for either heavier equipment or high resolution landscape / nature photography: a slight loss of convenience in exchange for possibly higher image quality (sort of like locking up the SLR mirror pre-release). A great source of discussion of varied viewpoints on this I could recommend is to join a source of information and fellow-photographer networking that has "photo" in the first part of the name and "net" in the 2d part of the name. It requires registration, but is free. I have found that site to be the best way of finding another photographer somewhere in the world who has confronted just the obscure technical / equipment problem I despair of finding guidance to.Noah W : The screw lock is quite fast. In addition, you can potentially tighten it with more precision than a flip lock.CHI-HSIN L : I had flip lock version before, but I use this one now. Flip lock is seconds quicker, but I feel more secure by twist the knob. EUGENE C : A screw clamp can never be as fast as fliplock. The main advantage of this type clamp is strength and the ability to accept any arca made camera plate as well as arca plates from other any other manufacturer.NOAH M : Hi Gary, I bought this head recently and I'm thrilled with the performance. It's rock solid and doesn't creep at all which was my chief complaint about the Gitzo ball head I used previously. You'll need an Arca compatible camera plate (you can get camera specific ones) which easily slips onto the head. It's then tightened with less than a half turn. I cant' imagine that the flip lock is any quicker and in fact I've read that some people find the flip lock awkward. NoahNAJEEB J : I switched out the twist lock for a RRS quick release ... but its not bad as it is... just a few twists... maybe 2 seconds longer than a quick release.TONY L : Hi there! I previously used a Manfrotto release as well and this is definitely not as quick. I'd say the Manfrotto takes a second to release and the arca Swiss screw on takes two seconds if you want to slide your camera off and three seconds if you want to take it off vertically (like the Manfrotto)--just an extra twist. On the other hand this style is *way* more secure and I don't see myself going back to the quick release system (especially since Arca Swiss plates are slightly different sizes depending on the the manufacturer). The screw type release allows you to buy Arca Swiss style plates from any manufacturer (ie wimberly, rrs, Kirk, acratech, etc.). Sometimes these plates are jut slightly too small or big which throws off the quick release system. If it makes a difference, I love this ballhead and release style. I'm fully satisfied with this purchase. The only other one I'd consider is the rrs b-50 because it has an extra tension knob so that the camera doesn't flop over when you loosen the ballhead, but I still think that for ease of use and no-nonsense engineering the z1 is better (I own a rrs-b40--which is a smaller version of the b-50--for my travel tripod). If you want the most secure quick release system from what I've researched Really Right Stuff (rrs) makes the best. You'll have to use strictly rrs arca Swiss style plates but you should be able to use this quick release system with the z1. Good luck and happy shooting...GARY R : The Arca-Swiss is not really a quick release like the lever type releases. The top knob (smaller of the two on the right of the picture) must be loosened to remove the camera. It is not as fast as the flip lock you see on some ball heads. However, it is fine for me as I shoot mostly landscapes and flowers. I never carry the camera on the tripod more than 25 feet, so I take it off and on a lot. Overall, it is a fantastic ball head--the best I have ever used. A friend of mine has a quick release like you describe and he is switching to either the Arca-Swiss or similar ball head.PHIL D : I bought this a few months ago. It's my third and nicest ball head. It's a beast. - absolutely rock solid. Gorgeous. The quick release design of an Arca-Swiss plate is not "quick" however. I think it was designed to be rock solid and hold just about anything and the compromise is that it takes probably 2 full turns of the knob to lock the plate attached to the camera solidly into the head slot. That said, I haven't found it to be onerous at all. I guess the difference between 1 second and 3 seconds to lock your camera seems negligible to me. I have a Giottos quick locking plate on my other head and that just doesn't seem as trustworthy for a big expensive lens.JAMES B : Releasing the camera requires several turns of the small knob. Although you could remove the camera in 4 or 5 seconds, it's not as quick as a flip lock for sure. IMO that's a small price to pay for the incredible precision and carrying capacity of this head. But if the speed of a flip lock is critical, this probably is not the head for you.LYLE W : Gary - you twist the screw a couple revolutions and slide the lens out (forward or back). I do like that this has pins at each end that prevents lens from sliding out if not fully screwed tight. I would say a flip lock is slightly quicker to swap lenses on the ballhead.

My first real ball head

This ball head was made extremely well. It is very solid and look like it’s going to last a lifetime. Ball head itself is very smooth when loose and very very hard to move when tight hence the 130lbs weight capacity of this ball head. Panning is good but i little tight, I put this on a gitzo systematic tripod and i can’t fully loosen the panning knob lock because the knob touches the plate of the tripod that would unable me to turn the panning knob, when tighten I just turn it half way and its extremely tight.

Overpriced, Stiff

The ball is stiff. Also, you cannot remove the clamp unless you send it in, so you cannot replace the clamp yourself. Very expensive, you do not get what you pay for.

Solid, solid, solid!!!

The Arca Swiss Z1 is an extraordinarily stable tripod head. It does a great job with long exposure shots with my D800 / 200-400mm F4 combo. Images out at 400mm are sharp, with no pixel smearing detected. Love the classic quick set, as I can adjust to any manufacturer's Arca-Swiss compatible plate w/o having to adjust a lever tension, and it's nearly as fast to engage. I don't own any small form factor plates, so I don't have an appreciation for the presence of the lower jaws, and sometimes when I'm in a hurry, I hook plates on the lower lip by mistake. Not a big deal, just an annoyance as I'm getting more accustomed to the mount. Overall, the Arca Swiss Z1 gets top marks from me.

Professional Grade

This is my first professional quality ball head. Wow, what a difference! I replaced the standard plate with a Kirk plate, which includes a built-in bubble. It works much better than my old Manfrotto "pistol grip" Model 3265 in terms of fine adjustments. I keep a RRS "L" plate constantly mounted on my Nikon D200. I plan on changing the head on my monopod next, as the convenience of the Arca-Swiss mounting plate is tough to beat.

Good, but not perfect

This is the only high quality head I have used, and it is a big leap up from Manfrottos etc. The motion is very smooth, and it works well for things like tracking birds and panning. It would be nice to have a second ball slot like Really Right Stuff heads (which I have never used). It is heavy - weighs more than my tripod - but it is a pleasure to use. I don't notice any effect from the vaunted asymmetric ball - it will still flop if friction is not snug enough, but the friction adjustment is very gradual, and it becomes very solid well short of locking up. The friction knob can be set to maintain suitable minimum friction for your rig, but it seems to loosen up over time, and needs to be readjusted fairly often. Fortunately this isn't difficult. The thing I like least is the hokey little lever that controls the panning rotation. It does allow me to set some friction for smooth panning, but unless it is fully tightened it seems to loosen easily, losing the friction. All of that said, it is a very smooth, solid head that gives great control over the motion (or not) of the camera.

It's the classic

Ok, I have not tried any other ball head, but as a first, I thought to make sure that I bought something truly great, and not have to keep buying a better product because of dissatisfaction. Using it for about a week so far, I can only say good things about it.

Great tripod head

Arca Swiss heads are probably the best. There are Chinese made ball heads that are knock offs that might come close. If you want a quality product and price is no object, this is your product.

Does not come with plate.

I needed this head in time for a project. My previous tripod head failed and I needed this one in time to do the job. Luckily I had another back-up, but I did not want to use it. [...]

SIMPLY THE BEST

Easily functions with my 400mm 2.8 + Nikon D3x on Gitzo Series 3. Also works well with Wimberley Sidekick. Just had to have the one that the system is named after. Absolutely none of the problems with older B1 that I read about.

Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 Single Pan

I've used an Arca-Swiss B1 for years, and recently purchased the Z1. Same smooooth, fluid action and reliable tension control, in a smaller package. I HIGHLY recommend Arca-Swiss monoball to any serious photographer. Treat it right and it will reward you for years to come. I use L-Brackets on my camera bodies, and it is quick and easy to attach/remove. Once you set the tension for your lens/body combo, it is ridiculously simple to recompose. Very stable.

The quick release bolt can stick in your

Like this ballhead a lot and I have owned quite a few before. No creep at all! One thing to consider is the long quick release bolt, the flip lock version is closer to the body, but maybe more prone to errors.

Before diving into the world of professional photography or videography, equip yourself with the ARCA-SWISS Monoball Z1+ Single Pan Tripod Head. This state-of-the-art tripod head, the latest addition to the renowned Monoball Z-Family, is engineered with advanced and patented features that have been significantly optimized using innovative technical solutions, superior materials, and high-performance coatings.

The Monoball Z1+ is equipped with the refined "Motion Related Gravity Control" (MRGC) system, a unique feature that sets it apart from its competitors. The MRGC is a variable bi-directional drag system that operates independently on both axes, providing stability in all directions. This means that while horizontal movements maintain a consistent friction setting, vertical movements leverage the aspherical ball's design, leading to a progressive increase in friction as the camera or lens is tilted forward or backward.

This intelligent engineering, combined with precision manufacturing, ensures well-distributed radial forces for a strong hold, while simultaneously allowing for smooth and accurate positioning of your camera. Whether you're capturing stunning landscapes or filming dynamic action scenes, the Monoball Z1+ offers the reliability and versatility you need.

Weighing in at just 800 grams, this lightweight tripod head can handle impressive loads of up to 60 kg, making it suitable for a wide range of camera and lens combinations.
