While there are other ballheads that are more expensive and do more things, for me, as a beginner, the BH1 has been very useful and fills my needs very nicely.

I upgraded my "beginner's" tripod to a Benro A2970F, which I love, but failed to realize a ball head was required. (That's a novice for you) Anyway, with some guidance from the Adorama staff, I purchased the Benro BH1 Single Action Quick Release Ballhead. I have been very pleased with my purchase and the assistance provided by the Adorama staff.

This is a great low-cost ball head for anyone starting out. I purchased this to replace an old pan head that came with my tripod legs a few years ago, and I'll never look back. This ball head is very well built and feels sturdy in my hand. It has a nice solid weight, with an excellent load capacity. The quick-release system is very secure and easy to attach, and features a safety lock to prevent you from accidentally unlatching the system and dropping your camera. With my t3i and various heavy lenses mounted up, this still balances well and moves freely. There are two notches in the head that allow you to rotate 90* into portrait orientation, which works very well. My favorite part of this head is that the locking latch to lock the ball into place can be rotated 360* to be used with either hand. Great head for a great price!

This is a pretty good single action ballhead. It is well built and works well. However, this has been a learning experience for me. I would not recommend this ballhead for monopod use. I am pretty particular and use a monopod for field work and macro a lot. I thought the fact that it could be rotated to 90 degrees, camera in portraight orientation, in two places would make it a cinch. Not true. Thought in other ways the excellent single action locking works well, switching to portraight orientation, rotating the camera 90 degrees to the side is too difficult, for me. It needs to happen easily without having to look at the ballhead to get the ball-stem in one of the two grooves. I want that to happen more easily. It is the design/geometry of the base and the two grooves in it that allow tilting the ball a full 90 degrees. These grooves at the top are too narrow, the ball stem will not just fall into them, it has to be found and alligned. Can't be done too easily while looking through the viewfinder or keeping an eye on that butterfly. For tripod work this ballhead will work very well, and I will use it for that. For my monopod, I need to get a different configuration.
