I own three units (so far)! Great to expand a single Firewire port to six, to connect ALL of your firewire devices at once: flatbed scanner, film scanner, digital audio I/O, DV camcorder, and external Hard Disc Drive(s). Firewire-400 generally outperforms USB-2.0 for external hard disk drives, even though USB-2.0 is "faster" in theory (480Mbps vs. 400Mbps) as measured by the HD-Speed freeware utility on several different Firewire/USB or combo HDD units.

This is a great product for anyone with multiple FireWire products and only a few or one FireWire ports on your computer. I used to daisy chain my three external hard drives together, but heard speculation that doing so might damage certain components (perhaps during a power surge, although I'm not certain; a Google search turns up many reviews of daisy chaining). Being paranoid of the data I have stored on these hard drives, I decided to invest in a FireWire hub. This one works great, and apparently doesn't even need to be plugged in to function (although I use the supplied power cable, since I have access to a plug). It comes with a FireWire 400 cable, in case you don't have a spare to attach it to the computer. It seems to work as fast as things ran before I got the hub.

• The latest innovation from Belkin delivers six, peer-to-peer FireWire ports that support data throughput of up to 400Mbps. Our new FireWire 6-Port Hub connects seamlessly with your FireWire DV camcorders, web cams, FireWire storage devices, scanners, printers, and other DV-compatible multimedia devices. The Hub also acts as a FireWire repeater, so you can place devices up to an additional 15 feet (4.5 meters) from other connected FireWire peripherals. Connecting devices to the Hub using 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cables enables them to draw power from the Hub, for even easier setup and operation.
