Shopper : What is the difference between the "variable friction" and "center lever" version?STEPHAN P : Sorry, I cant tell you that, as the only one I ever had and have, is the center lever version, but I do suspect it to be similar to the friction adjustment on ball heads, so one could adjust that on both ends of the arm!Kenneth T : The center lock version is heavier duty and will handle more weight.TIANXIAO M : On the variable friction arm you turn the wheel to adjust the tightness. It's very easy to set and make small adjustments with. The center lever arm has a spring loaded lever that can only lock or unlock the arm. It requires a large amount of force to start moving, but then snaps into position. It makes it very difficult and annoying to reposition the arm, especially if you only need to make small adjustments.JOHN W : Variable friction involves using a knob to control the friction needed to move the arm. The tighter you turn the knob the greater the effort needed to move the arm. The lever is either fully locked or fully open. No variation possible. I find the variable model easier to use.
ROBERT P : What is the best way to mount this product to a tripod, for use with a DSLR?MARK G : I do not use the use the magic arm to mount a camera. I use it to mount light heads, small strobes or lighting modifiers. I use some sort of clamp to attach to a wall, shelf, pipe or a light stand...then a combination of knuckles (grip heads) and pins. It functions like an articulated C stand extension arm for me. If I needed to mount a camera onto a magic arm and put the magic arm somewhere...I would use a C stand or some other sturdy but moveable stand instead of a tripod. Cannot see how a magic arm fixes to a tripod in a reliable weight bearing way. I know some tripods have horizontal extension arms...that fit the center column...that might work. Sorry this is no helpNicholas F : With a super clampTIMOTHY W : I purchased it for a special use taking antique auto photos. This gets mounted to a pole that extents from under the front of the car. I have the clamp that permits the pole mounting and a ball head on the camera end. My plan was never to use this on a tripod.

Very easy to Over torque

This particular arm is very easy to over torque and then requires rebuilding (complicated!) I would highly recommend the lever version.

Articulating Extension Arm

I bought the Manfrotto Variable Friction (Articulating) Arm to attach to my Vanguard Multi Mount Tripod boom arm so that I can mount flash units on either side of the camera position, to provide multi-directional lighting on macro subjects. I believe it is also durable enough to mount a camera and extend it beyond the reach of the multi mount boom arm (assuming the use of counter-weights). With a super clamp it can be attached to other objects at the scene for lighting, or reflector support.

Versitile tool

The Variable Friction Arm allows the positioning of equipment in what might otherwise be inconvenient or impossible places. By attaching the arm to clamps (sold separately), the photographer is able to place equipment attached to poles, railings, door frames, edges of tables... basically anything you can clamp onto! Can be used for remote cameras, strobes, etc.
