Perfect for Many Things

I like this product alot! I have tried several "Ball Heads" and they are just NOT for me. Personal preference, I guess. This head is GREAT for portraiture, macro, and landscapes. The weight surprised me, I wouldn't take it on a long hiking trip... that needs a really lightweight hiking tripod... I guess. I LOVE the precision adjustments. This is really helpful for macro. The "quick" adjustments are very fast. All of the springs are strong, so if you have very weak hands or arthritis...

The "quick" adjustments are very fast. All of the springs are strong, so if you have very weak hands or arthritis, this might be a problem. The quick release head works well, and I like the "secondary safety", a little lever that you have to pull in addition to the "main" lever - to make sure your camera doesn't drop off. The Adorama description doesn't say it, but the head DOES come with one quick release plate to attach to the bottom of your camera. Everything is well made.

Knob controls keep breaking

great precision adjustment, though somewhat difficult to turn knobs over wide spans. Big problem is control mechanism broke and warranty repair took 2 months. And, it just broke again. hmmmm, back to waranty center. Maybe that pro model is more reliable?

Very good product for the price

I shoot a lot of real estate photography and this head provides the stability, motion and the leveling accuracy I need. The only thing I would like to see added is 1/4-20 female thread adaptor on the base for fitting onto smaller tripods.

Works great

By

I have always been a ballhead shooter until I purchased this gearhead. I mostly do landscapes and architectural photography. Having the gear head has made it significantly easier and faster to level out my camera. Plus I no longer have to worry that the ballhead will loosen and the camera will drop lens forward. So far I'm happy with all aspects of this product and would recommend it.

Great Head for fine adjustments

By

I primarily use this geared head for lightpainting and landscapes and it works great.

Great product, well built.

By

I use this geared head for architechtural and real estate photography. Very precise and easy to use. The wide plate holds the camera very stable. Well built and works great on top the Manfrotto tripod, even on days with winds gusting up to 15~20 mph. The geared head attaches to the tripod via center bolt, plus 3 smaller bolts on the perimter of the mounting plate to hold it very stable without any movement or slop on the tripod. Excellent product in my opinion and highly recommend it. Adorama also did a great job of shipping the items quickly and well packaged.

Excellent Product

By

I find this just a bit frustrating at first to adjust as I am not used to the adjustment mechanism. However, making the fine adjustments to level the camera is immensely better and easier than a lesser 3 way head. It is very strong, well built and everything locks in place easily and securely.

For Precision Work.

By

This geared head makes camera positioning and composition precise and consistent. It makes leveling the horizontal and vertical axes a lot easier and faster, as shown and confirmed by both electronic and manual bubble levels. The knob can use a better material, that is the reason for not giving it 5 stars. I can give if 4.5 stars if that is possible, because that is a minor concern.

My new favorite head

By

Let's get rid of the one downside: it's heavy. It weighs as much as the Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 that it's mounted to. This is not a backpack to the top of a mountain head. However, for everything else, it is exceptional. I figured I would use it exclusively for Macro work, was I wrong! I have placed my ball heads back in their boxes...I'll pull them out for a backpacking trip, but little else. This head is not only precise, it's very strong. I place a Pentax PF-80 spotting scope with a Pentax K-5 attached, and the head doesn't break a sweat! It's also fast to reposition. I figured with all those dials and what not, to move it more than a few degrees would be a monumental task...wrong again. A quick pull and everything shifts to approximately where you need it. Then dial up the exact composition you require, and click the release!

Solid Citizen

By

Fantastic head that is great for precise composition. The mounting plates are inexpensive and the mount is secure. I use it for 6x7, 4x5 and 5x7 work where it excels. It's heavier than a good ballhead, but you have much better control. It would be lousy for sports or birds as it would be too slow and awkward to use. We also use these for mounting 15lb video projectors from ceilings. They give excellent control in that application.

R U a Control Freak?

By

This geared head has no competition at this price point, so don't try to compare it to anything else. If you need high precision movements in a controlled, easy-to-use, and reasonable weight package, this is the best you can find. I just wish they'd add more levels to work with.

Questions about this item:

dbltapp d  How can this be modified to use the ubiquitous arca swiss mount?
JOSEPH M  Hejnar Photo makes a conversion kit. The kit is high quality, well made and as good as anything from Kirk, RRS, etc. I've been using the converted 410 for a couple years now without a problem with both a Nikon D800 with L bracket and a 4x5 field camera.
dbltapp d  Thanks for the lead. Looks like Hejnar just bolts an arca clamp to a manfroto plate. A DIY job?
Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
ROBERT S  Becuase I use my tripod for both photography and taking distance measurements with a laser measuring device, I needed a tripod head with precise adjustments. It works well for this purpose, although if you have large fingers, it may be hard to use in cold weather with gloves.
Joe B  Can I use this with head my VISTA ATTARAS tripod? If not, what tripods does it work with?
FUN F  This is my first pro-type tripod. I am using the geared head with a set of used Manfrotto legs, to be honest. I got the used legs from Adorama (and to be quite frank, I could not have told that the legs were used unless Adorama had said it was so.) The head has a circular articulating platform on which a female 3/8-16 screw thread is attached. I would imagine that any other tripod that has a male 3/8-16 screw attachment and a flat articulating surface would work. The setup seems very heavy and sturdy to my mind. The head seems to be able to swivel in any direction desired, within a 1/2 sphere range of motion (at least). I have not used the tripod as of yet. In addition to still photography using a view camera, I plan to attach the tripod to a circular platform with wheels and use it as a poor man's mobile stand for video. I hope this answer is useful for you. Good luck!
