Questions & Answers

Edwin M : What is a good stand for this Boom?JOSEPH S : I use the Manfrotto 1004BAC light stand with this boom. Works very well. I have the large orange counterweight to balance the boom and don't need additional sandbags or anything. The light stand is pretty light for being aluminum. RANDY H : Any decent stand will work. The grip part that assembles to the stand has different size openings to grip different diameter stand shafts. I would suggest, as always to use a hefty sand bag on the leg of your stands just to help prevent accidents and tip overs.DON L : Since the boom is itself quite heavy (especially with the weight attached) I would recommend a stand with a reasonably wide base. Mine, which date back to the 70's, can expand out to 37 inches measured leg to leg and seem to work fine. Also, the stand attachment is compatible with 4 different stand sizes, marked 19, 20, 25, and 28.GARY S : I think any heavy duty stand should work fine.
KAREN A : I just opened the boom box that arrived today. There were NO directions in the box and I can't figure it out. Help!?? Karen AndersonGARY S : Hi Karen Please try to send me your questions at gwstilesatverizondotnet I'll do my best to help.JOSEPH S : Hello. The kit should have included an Allen wrench so you'll need that. On the poles, you'll notice male and female pieces that only fit together one way. Use the Allen wrench to loosen the Allen screws until they are flush. You should now be able to slide the poles onto each other and connect all 3 pieces together. Once you have the poles test-fit, tighten the Allen screws to secure them together (righty-tighty, lefty-loosey). The big weight comes with a screw and clamp assembly which affixes the weight to the poles. Don't put the weight on the pole yet. Next...that big honkin clamp assembly. It took me a while to figure that one out. I think this big clamp is more of a universal one rather than being custom fit for this particular kit. I'll save you some trouble fitting this though. On each side of the clamp, it'll tell you if it's the Boom side or the Light Stand side. Looking at the Boom side, you should see the numbers 19, 20, 25, 28 which I assume are millimeter numbers for the diameter of the pole you're inserting. For this kit, you'll want your boom parallel to 19 and 20. On the Light Stand side, that will depend on your light stand. I have the Manfrotto 1004BAC so I put my light stand pole in parallel to 25 and 28. By the way, the 1004BAC - great light stand...I have 2 of them. What's nice is that when you have weight on stand (like a boom pole, mic, etc.), it acts like a gas shock and doesn't let the extended stand part slam down on itself. Now, if you have that big weight on it, the gas shocks don't soften ALL of the blow, but they help. Next, attach the boom pole to the big clamp centering the pole (left to right) in the clamp. Then slide the clamp onto your light stand and secure everything. Next, attach the big weight close to the vertical light stand to keep the center of gravity balanced. Attach your other items and move the weight to level it. I hope this helps. If not, just let me know! Joe
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?GREG T : I have had good luck with Manfrotto light stands. They hit a decent price/quality balance.ROBERT A : Perfect for smaller constant light sources [Aputure 120D] and mono-lights/strobe heads with medium softboxes [24x36]. You can go larger, but it starts getting flexxy... I used to shoot a lot of food on location in restaurants, and this breaks down super small to navigate tight quarters, sets up fast, and would hold my Elinchrom EL500 and 24x36 Photoflex softbox over the table perfectly. Great quality and easy to use.

Very nice boom

I'm using this on a couple of different Manfrotto light stands. It s very sturdy and the counterbalance weight system works very well. The counterbalance is a pretty significant formed chunk of steel.

Quality Gear

Clamped the boom to the top tube of a light stand. Monolight base on one end of the boom counterbalancing a remote head and light modifier on the opposite end. Repurposed the boom counterweight, moved it to the base of the light stand to add stability. Gives a great deal of flexibility positioning light sources and modifiers. Can also add height to light stands in a pinch. Strong and functional means of joining boom sections, but somewhat clumsy. If you lose the allen wrench necessary to assemble/disassemble sections, it's likely to be a bad day.

Good boom pole!

This boom comes with the 10lb weight, adjustable boom pole mounting bracket and clips to keep your strobe power cord nice and neat against the pole. It does bend a little with a XPLOR 600 on there when it's straight out to the side but it's sturdy enough. Get a tennis ball, slit it open on one side and stick it on the bottom and you can use it as an assistants boom pole. Nice build.

Perfect for overhead photography

I use this boom with a Manfrotto 143BKT camera bracket to position my gripped Canon 5dIII so as to shoot from above -- a wireless remote shutter release makes this rig complete. The counterweight is sufficiently massive but not excessively so (sure beats a sandbag!). The boom components rotate easily but stay locked in place once positioned.

Works as advertised.

The boom certainly works, but setting it up and taking it down could be a little easier. The mechanism connecting the three sections is reliable, it's just not quick.

Great product

The grip at the end of the boom opposite the light allows the boom to be rotated with precision. The boom is easy to disassemble for transport and then assemble for use. The middle section can be removed if working in a tight space.
