Manfrotto Boom Stand 420

I don't have any other 'boom' stands, so can't compare, but I am very happy with mine so far. It's the same quality as other Manfrotto non-boom stands, of which I own three. I have mine supporting a Nikon SB800 and a 36 inch umbrella. It seems very sturdy, and setup was simple. The clamps hold tight. I like that I can get the umbrella directly over the subject, and fairly high.

Very Satisfied with this Stand

By

Metal construction is solid. Very intuitive and easy to use. Extends far enough. metal finish is nice. I use this product with a strobe and softbox. Note that the sandbag is BYO-sand. I would probably want a second sandbag if I were to extend the boom when working on unstable ground outside.

Very Nice

For the price point it is perfect, just make sure you have the proper counter weight to go with it. Can hold the weight it says and then some.

I can use this with large or medium Elinchrom softboxes, and find this stand very versatile, and easily adjustable...I'm buying a second one!

very good product

By

I bought 3 of these for use as a mobile studio in the strobist stle of photography. The boom is capable of taking a flash head and 40 cm softbox, although at full boom extension the boom exhibits some flexing. This is no problem however. I add extra weight to the stand legs when doing this. Manfrotto makes a solid product. I still use a manfrotto tripod i bought 30 years ago, so hopefully will not need more light stands for quite some time.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Can #9545 casters be used with this product?
CARL B  Yes. I added casters to mine...but it is awkward when rolling it around.
Shopper  Hello, can you tell me if this will hold an SB900 and a small LiteDome? Can you use it as a standard light stand i.e. a shoot-through umbrella or would another setup be more versatile (i.e. a separate light stand entirely). Are there other parts needed to connect those items to the stand?
SEIDLITZ T  The Manfrotto 420 Boom Stand is VERY strong and very versatile being a LARGE standard light stand OR a boom stand. It comes with a 'sandbag' and double-ended brass male fitting that can be mounted "in-line' or 90 degreees to the boom. It is absolutely strong enough for my Paul C Buff AlienBees 1600, Lithium battery and Medium Octodome (5' diameter) when used in a standard upright configuration. When used as a 'boom' stand the key is weighting the base with a ballast and balancing the extension length. Of course the more you 'split' the extension, the shorter you can extend your light. I try to keep that weight down... rated at 4.4lbs at full extension but will easily handle my Canon 580exii and a small Octodome. I use two one gallon water jugs with molded handles (rather than the 'sand' bags) clipped with LARGE carabiners (from Home Depot)that clip through the handle and around the vertical tube above the tripod base. I use another one gallon bottle of water hanging from the empty sandbag. Be sure to keep the extended boom OVER one of the tripod legs for stability. (A Manfrotto 026 Swivel Lite-Tite Umbrella adapter is helpful for angling as a standard configuration, but adds too much wasted weight when extended as a boom.) I love this stand!
