Manfrotto Boom Stand 420

I don't have any other 'boom' stands, so can't compare, but I am very happy with mine so far. It's the same quality as other Manfrotto non-boom stands, of which I own three. I have mine supporting a Nikon SB800 and a 36 inch umbrella. It seems very sturdy, and setup was simple. The clamps hold tight. I like that I can get the umbrella directly over the subject, and fairly high.

Very Satisfied with this Stand

By

from Lexington, VA  -  Pro Photographer

Metal construction is solid. Very intuitive and easy to use. Extends far enough. metal finish is nice. I use this product with a strobe and softbox. Note that the sandbag is BYO-sand. I would probably want a second sandbag if I were to extend the boom when working on unstable ground outside.

Very Nice

For the price point it is perfect, just make sure you have the proper counter weight to go with it. Can hold the weight it says and then some.

I can use this with large or medium Elinchrom softboxes, and find this stand very versatile, and easily adjustable...I'm buying a second one!

very good product

By

from queanbeyan, NSW, Australia  -  Pro Photographer

I bought 3 of these for use as a mobile studio in the strobist stle of photography. The boom is capable of taking a flash head and 40 cm softbox, although at full boom extension the boom exhibits some flexing. This is no problem however. I add extra weight to the stand legs when doing this. Manfrotto makes a solid product. I still use a manfrotto tripod i bought 30 years ago, so hopefully will not need more light stands for quite some time.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Can #9545 casters be used with this product?
JOHN V  I have no knowledge of casters being available for this product by Manfrotto or aftermarket supplier. I did not investigate when I purchased the stand. Would not use casters myself if available. Especially with a boom arm, I don't want any movement of the light stand. So I sandbag all of my light stands for stability.
Shopper  Hello, can you tell me if this will hold an SB900 and a small LiteDome? Can you use it as a standard light stand i.e. a shoot-through umbrella or would another setup be more versatile (i.e. a separate light stand entirely). Are there other parts needed to connect those items to the stand?
THOMAS A K  Hi. I will tell you what my experience has been with this stand. First, the overall fit and finish is nice, what you'd expect out of Manfrotto. The counterbalance pouch has a good amount of velcro to secure your weight. I use free weights and it works great. On this stand, I've used anything from a bare light up to an Octabox. Normally I use a beauty dish and sometimes a grid with that, and this isn't an issue. If I had any negative comments, I would say I wouldn't mind if it went a little higher and wider, and also, the feet could extend out further. But overall, 4 out of 5.
