Very good filter

Really nice filter - it does justice to the B+W/Schneider brand. No regrets for paying a premium for this filter. The fit and finish is impeccable: almost like holding a piece of jewelry in your hand.

They Call These 'Hot Mirror' Filters

These are quite expensive but very useful to get the best performance out of Digital Cameras. The response of camera sensors goes way outside the visual colors off both ends of the spectrum. There is some filtering on most cameras (more or less) but best practice is to nail the problem with these cutoff filters. The effect is vaguely similar to a polarizer but looks like a contrastier and snappier picture file. The IR sensitivity of the sensor will 'wash out' the color in subtle ways plus IR lite will "smear" the image since the wavelength is very long & the lens is not corrected for that wavelength. Buy them if you can afford them. The effect is not 'in your face' but is well worth it.

Instant enhanced clarity

Skylight protective filters are valuable both to enhance clarity, especially for landscapes, and to protect the lens. Skylight filters worked extremely well with film, and work well with digital also. Given the greater sensitivity of digital sensors to infra-red however, this UV/IR cut filter is a significant step up. As a test I shot images with no filter, conventional skylight and this UV/IR filter, and indeed the filter proved itself. A quality lens with no filter gives fine results; Adding a skylight filter improves clarity, tonal purity and saturation, and the UV/IR filter made an even greater difference in sharpness, color purity and saturation. It is not cheap, but to me it is worth every penny. Indeed, why put a $10.00 filter on a $2,000.00 lens? This high quality filter is a worthwhile assset, especially for landscape photography.

A must for an IR converted camera

I converted an old camera to take infrared pictures a few years back and now I finally picked up this filter. This filter blocks the IR so that if needed I can take regular pics with this camera. It still shows a little red if you don't set your white balance.

Absolute Requirement for Leica M8

As most, if not all, Leica M8 owners are aware incandescent lighting causes coloration difficulties unless a UV/IR lens filter is used. I purchased this filter for use during my 50th high school class reunion, which performed flawlessly over the broad spectrum of lighting situations presented. Highly recommended!!

Good B+W filter ever let you down.

Good German optics as Leica's E46 UV/IR! Good choice as substitution.

Liked it, but...

This filter does exactly what it is designed to do. My Hutech Canon T1i is custom modified with it's infrared cut filter removed and replaced with a clear filter. This allows all spectrums to be recorded and is important for astronomical applications. However, if you want to use the camera to take regular pictures, you need this filter, but it will not prevent you from having to do a custom white balance, since the images will still come out pink. Just take a piece of white print paper and do a custom white balance under strong daylight with the filter in place. The custom white balance will remove the pink coloration, giving you the color the camera was intended to output.

good for rescue and servaillence

i found out that any video camera with or with out night shot can see flames with these filters as long as there hot regardless if the smoke is thick black you will see it. and humans do not have negative effects like trees and so on so real easy to spot them in ocean or in heavey bush. the clothes and body is normal while everything else is a negative like that of photograph negatives. but you do need strong sunlight for it to work

Reasonable Price

The effect is apparent when using it with an IR sensitive camera. You really can't live without it.

Effectively blocks IR, best for tele len

I bought this lens for use with my D2h and 18-70mm f/3.5~4.5 DX Nikkor lens. It definitely block IR. I get nice blacks when shooting with this lens. But there is a slight cyan cast at the corners of the image when shooting in the 18mm to 24mm range, but the cast is gone by 35mm and longer. I recommend this filter for use on 35mm lenses OR LONGER with DX bodies. I do not recommend this lens for use with any lens wider than 35mm. Consider the #489 IR filter instead for wide lenses. That is my opinion.

I use this filter to correct the infra red contamination problem in my M8. It fixes the problem right away. Highly recommend it.

This B+W Interference Filter has a completely colorless glass carrier coated with a number of extremely thin, partially reflecting layers with precisely computed thicknesses, similar to MC coating.

The B+W Filter 486 does not block by means of absorption, but by interference of the unwanted UV- and IR radiation that is repeatedly reflected between these layers.

It is especially recommended for CCD applications where digital image sensors have not been fitted with an IR protection filter.
This filter is completely clear and it requires no increase in exposure. Its filter factor is 1.
