EXCELLENT OPTICAL QUALITY

THIS LENSE TAKES THE MOST ELEGANT PORTRAITS IN THE WORLD,THE BLUR IS NICE ALSO.RAZOR SHARP PHOTOS EVEN AT LARGE APERTURES.THE ADJUSTABLE FOCUSING DISTANCE IS MORE FINIICKY THEN SAY THE ONE ON THE 70-200 IS.BUT IT IS EASY TO GET USED TO.GREAT FOR ACTION SHOTS ALSO.

Very Nice but Not for Cropped Sensor

This review is based on my one day use on a Canon 7d. As much as I wanted to like this lens, The Lord Of The L Lens, I just couldn't find any practical use for it. I already own a 70-200 f/4 lens and that has just as good sharpness as the 135 f2 L prime lens. Having to move my feet to recompose a shot seemed dumb considering the price, I really had no room, or I'd end up in the middle of the street! I'd buy this lens again, but only after grabbing a full frame camera first.

Red Ring of Portrait Photography!

By

from NYC

I wanted to wait a while before writing a review on the Canon EF 135mm F/2. Today is the day. After a good bit of use, I wanted to share my humble opinion of this lens. The EF 135mm is the gold standard as a Canon Telephoto non-long range lens! Advantages: Stunning, clean, sharp, smooth, colorful visuals of subjects at maximum aperture F/2, Incredible Bokeh at F/2 (especially with background light in low light environments), Fast Auto Focus (AF), Very quiet USM motor, and Excellent build quality, and looks sexier without lens hood (in my opinion). This is the lens for top quality photography! I cannot fault the lens for the following 'disadvantages', but users should know about lens Challenges: At 135mm Prime (fixed lens) user cannot adjust the zoom so subjects always appear much closer than user may want. Because of this reason, the lens does not have versatility to walk around with and talk photos of both indoor and outdoor subjects. Conclusion: I cannot think of any other reason to use this lens...unless it is for taking out portrait shots of people's faces or certain inanimate objects. I will never sell this lens, because it is really that phenomenal. However, unless I'm taking photos of people it is hard to use the EF 135mm.

Best lens ever

By

from NY

This is a LEGEND !!! You all know that the price of this lens will increase and increase as there is nothing to compare to this. I highly recommend this to all my friends. I cannot believe that it is one of the cheapest L lenses and it is the best. This lens should cost the same as the 85mm 1.2L which i also have. After years those lenses will be so expensive that none can afford to buy. Thanks canon that give us the opportunity to have this lens at this price. The 135mm L is so sharp that you cannon believe in your eyes. It is sharper than any zoom of course and any other prime. It is really fast and accurate. I havent miss a shot during a day and havent miss a shot inside with the help of an ISO of the outstanding 6D. This is one of the best combination you can have in addition to Canon 6D EF 16-35mm 2.8L. (if you get a good copy because i had a bad experience with the 16-35 2.8, i have replaced it and got a sharp one now) Anyone that would like to shoot family and kinds playing around this is the L LEGEND LENS. I have a feeling that Canon will release an IS version soon. But for me this is more than enough as my hands are still very stable to get a sharp image at 1/50 or 1/80. I have also a good feeling that this lens have already a good name because is an old school glass from canon, so it will stay at the history. Really impressed and really happy,

Beautiful/Sharp

By

from Covington, Georgia  -  Pro Photographer

I've used this lens for portraits & sporting events. I am extremely pleased with it's performance at sporting events, it's quick & sharp. It out performs my 70-200mm 2.8 L USM II in the clarity of the photos. I've shot many photos using the 135, in low light there are problems. However, I do notice a couple things with the 70-200 that are lacking, but there are strengths as well.

Amazing lens

By

from Philadelphia PA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I use this for weddings, instead of the 70-200 2.8. This lens is lighter, smaller, and faster. If you want to differentiate yourself just a bit, use this lens. The separation is stunning, the bokeh creamy.

Wow! I'm loving this lens!

By

from White Mills, PA  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought this for the wide aperture to give me a little better isolation of subjects. Things look great so far. I'm looking forward to working with it and to force myself to do more portraits. It is sharp and colors look really good.

Pretty Great

By

from Las Vegas, NV

Of course it is fine quality, fast focusing, and tack sharp. I knew all that before I bought it. What has continually stood out to me about my 135 is how BEAUTIFUL my photos turn out; so very pleasing to the eye. For my needs (and low light photography is one of the things I really enjoy) IS would not be a meaningful addition to this lens. This lens is a bargain. It is also a specialist. It will not do everything of course, but even when you stretch it outside of its forte the result can still be impressive. The rare annoyance: Make no mistake this lens is NOT a substitute for a 70-200. You will be kind of frustrated if you are trying to use it in place of the 70-200. If you're one of those people trying to choose between the two and are only going to buy one of them, get the zoom (2.8mk2 of course). But seriously, at half the price/size/weight, when you're using the 135 really well, you may never care that you didn't have your big white zoom.

all of the rumors are true...

By

from Oklahoma

I had read for years that this was perhaps Canon's sharpest prime. After shooting with it for several months now, I have to agree. The focal length is a little bit of an adjustment when shooting casually on a hike or in the street, especially if you are used to a 50mm or zoom, but once you get comfortable, this lens will hardly leave your camera. With a still subject, such as an arranged portrait, this lens shines. The f/2 is plenty big to work with in 95% of conditions, and the lack of IS is not big deal. I would think the focal length would be a bit funny on a crop sensor, but have not tried it yet. I opted for this in place of a 70-200, and have not thought twice about it since. With this price tag, especially with a rebate, every serious shooter should have one.

"Lord of the Red Rings"

What an incredible lens! Dollar for dollar the best portrait lens. I have an 85L that costs twice as much and I don't believe does a better job on portraits.

Best L lens!

By

from Disneyland , California  -  Casual Photographer

Best Canon L lens! Perfect for Portrait and Street Photography as well. Pairing with my Canon 16-35L f/2.8 II, 24-70L f/2.8 II, and 35L f/1.4 perfectly. If I would pick one and one lens only! This Canon 135L f/2 is the one!

Amazing Lens

By

from Providence, RI  -  Photo Enthusiast

If you are looking for the 135mm focal length then this is unquestionably the best you can do at an affordable price. Color is amazing and the images are beyond sharp. I literally read dozens of reviews prior to the purchase and was suspicious that a lens could be as sharp as most claimed. It is that sharp.

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
PHILLIP F  The Canon EF 135mm f/2L is a very sharp and fast focusing lens. The f/2 aperture creates nice shallow DOF images. I feel It's price is reasonable for an L series lens.
Shopper  does this lens have IS?
Douglas J  No this lens does not have IS. It is a great lens and I have not found a need for image stabilization while using this lens. Using a tripod pretty much eliminates the need for IS, but even hand held this lens performs extremely well.
Shopper  I'm trying to decide what to get. Why did you pick this one?
MATT L  What type of lens are you looking to get? Just a telephoto? I chose this instead of the 70-200 because its waaay smaller and lighter, its a lot faster (2.0 vs. 2.8), in my opinion its canons sharpest lens. If you need more length, maybe the 70-200 would be a better fit. Or maybe go 135 f/2 and 200 f/2.8. I also only shoot with prime lenses. Thats sorta why I love it too. Hope that helps. Matt
