It Delivers

I gave this as a gift. I am answering these questions anecdotially. My niece has just started experimenting with the lens. She feels it will be a great help with her photo needs in her field of journalism.

inexpensive travel lens

I have many Canon L lenses. I bought this as a lightweight travel lens with a good focal range from wide to telephoto. It is not waterproof(WP). Has slower autofocus than USM lenses. Nor is it color-accurate. There is a yellow hue on the images. But this is easily remedied with PS. I call it my throwaway lens as it is inexpensive and easily replaced if damaged. I used it once in a snowstorm as I covered sporting event. Dang, snow got into the lens elements and fogged my images. Definitely not WP like my 17-40L. It is also only a daytime lens, as images are un-sharp wide open. So, barring any rain or snow, this lens holds up well, has good range and IS. Best of all, it gets most jobs done well enuf and is inexpensive.

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

This is my first zoom lens. I'm coming from the Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. I was looking for something that I could use so that I didn't have to zoom with my feet all of the time. In good light this lens works well. When you have low light, or the average amount of light indoors it seems to be a little slow. At this point I plan on replacing this lens when I can afford a faster zoom lens.

Great price for a step up lens

The lens is a good step up from the standard 18-55 kit lens that provides a reasonable range. I use it while hiking and it is a reasonable compromise for close ups on flowers and catching wild life. I will say that it did not arrive in a "white box" and was simply wrapped in bubble wrap with the registration card rubber banded to it.
