About Canon 18-55mm

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is designed for high-quality still image and video capture while being compact and lightweight, and features the optics, AF and image stabilization necessary for shooting in any number of situations. For brilliant image quality it has one high-precision aspheric lens to reduce chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range.

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens features optimized lens coatings to ensure exceptional color balance while minimizing ghosting and flare and a 7-blade circular aperture to ensure beautiful, soft backgrounds. For outstanding performance, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens perfectly complements the Movie Servo AF feature found on select EOS Cameras with a compact six-group zoom system and a new stepping motor and focus mechanism to deliver smooth and quiet continuous AF during movie shooting. Still photography benefits from a high-speed CPU and an optimized AF algorithm. Full-time manual focus is available in AF mode and the front element does not rotate during focus, perfect for use with polarizing filters. Handheld photography is enhanced by the lens' Optical Image Stabilizer system, offering the equivalent of four stops of compensation. Compact and highly versatile, it is the ideal lens to carry anywhere.

Sharp, Quick, Smooth Quiet Great

I purchased this lens to go with my Canon T4i as I wanted the best possible video performance and the flexibility of zoom lens. I had considered the 40mm STM lens but for the $ difference this lens is a much better value. It's lightweight construction is a real advantage as it permits you to use a lightweight stabilizer to get the best possible video performance. The full time manual focus is a real step up from the old kit lens and adds extra value.

Kit Lens with a twist

I ordered this lens for a Canon T4i. The STM was designed for this camera for focusing while filming. The noise created by non STM lenses is horrendous! The noise was eliminates with this lens but thats about it. The auto focus is not as advanced on this camera as the recently released 70D so it didnt benefit me. I'm also not a fan of really light weight lenses so that was a con. I never use the kit lens and since this is simply the kit lens with a twist, it didn't work out for me.

I just got the SL1. I'm ...

I just got the SL1. I'm planning a trip to Alaska and wanted to have a camera that would allow me to change lens. I have the 18-55 and the 55-250 lens and it seems to work super with both lens. I would like a bigger telephoto lens but the prices are totally out of my range. The SL1 is easy and understandable for a novice like myself.

My kit lens for my Canon T3i was damaged by a fall. This lens is a replacement. It has IS, which my original didn't. My first is lens and as I am in my 80's is welcom indeed

Throw away lens I should have waited

By

from Walhalla, SC

The lens was included with a kit and is no longer included with the T4i kits with good reason! If I knew how poorly it was built and noisy it was (useless shooting video unless you use a external mic) yes it's loud might as well shoot video next to a passing freight train, as for the build I have never seen anything made by Canon built so cheap! I though it was a counterfeit lens at first until I read others reviews if I knew canon was going to remove it from the kit and replace it with a STM version I would have waited! I had to buy a new STM lens to shoot video, I don't know what Canon was thinking when they included this piece of plastic pretending to be a Lens.

Good for landscapes, buildings

By

Good all-around general purpose lens, versatile enough for many situations. Relatively light weight. Good for a walk in the woods because it can capture a decent wide-angle landscape shot, yet still take a great close-up photo of an object along the trail, such as a flower. Limited zoom means it cannot get a close-up of distant wildlife, so if that's your target, you will need to consider a different lens. This lens works great for fitting buildings into the frame when standing close. I have taken some beautiful night shots of cityscapes with this lens using a tripod and long exposure.

Questions about this item:

Jan v  Can this lens be used with a Canon EOS 70D?
DIETER B  Yes, it will work on the 70D, but I am not certain whether it will give you all the features it is designed for. I use it on my 60D because it simplifies the use of a polarizer. Sorry, I cannot give you all the answers!
Patrick W  For most occasions, will this lens be a complement with 40mm pancake , or there will be many overlapping use cases?
TIMOTHY K  I have not used the Canon EF 40mm F/2.8 STM Pancake lens. The 40mm F/2.8 is obviously faster and preferable for low light or fast action situations assuming it has good optical quality. I bought the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens as a lower priced alternative to the faster lenses and I do not regret the purchase, it is a good quality lens and represents excellent value for the price - I would buy one again. I have used the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens for serious astrophotography of the Milky Way at 18mm F/3.5 and obtained surprisingly sharp star images across the entire field (I am using an APS chip which is more forgiving than full frame). I have also obtained sharp star images at 55mm at focal lengths between 18-55mm including 40mm. I am using a Canon 60Da camera. For daylight photos the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is excellent. Image stabilization seems to work fine. For still photos I usually get better results with manual focus than autofocus, this has been true for every autofocus lens I have ever used including the L series lenses.
John G  Will this lens mount on a canon eos 40d??
MICHAEL S  The following is copied from the lens information sheet that comes with the lens: Only the following EOS cameras are compatible with EF-S lenses (as of December 2012): EOS 7D, EOS 60D, EOS 60Da, EOS 50D, EOS 40D, EOS 30D, EOS 20D, EOS 20Da, EOS REBEL T4i/650D, EOS REBEL T3i/600D, EOS REBEL T2i/550D, EOS REBEL T1i/500D, EOS REBEL XSi/450D, EOS REBEL T3/1100D, EOS REBEL XS/1000D, EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi/400D DIGITAL, EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT/350D DIGITAL, EOS DIGITAL REBEL/300D DIGITAL, EOS M (when using with Mount Adapter EF-EOS M)
