Very versatile lens for a kit lens on a full frame camera

I originally bought this lens when I was shooting on a crop body, but didn't use it too often as it was always just a little too cropped to be useful for my applications. I recently upgraded to the EOS R and found that this lens with the adapter are a surprisingly good combination. I found myself using this lens more often now and am surprised that even with a 4.0 aperture I am still getting a very sharp and professional looking photograph. It is also great for my automotive photography as well, giving lots of great bokeh in the background and having tack sharp subject.

Very verstile vacation lens

I've owned my EF 24-105 L IS for many years using it with both crop, full frame and now the R mirrorless body, with the adapter. My copy of this lens is exceptionally sharp and never required micro focus calibration on my DSLRs. The lens is not that heavy and has a good range so its really "the go to" vacation lens when I travel. I own L series lens in telephoto zoom as well as wide angle 2.8 f stop. The Canon R is good with high ISO so the faster lens, though excellent, are not worth the trade off of weight on vacation. When I'm in my car I do use and carry the larger lens. Highly recommended.

Great lens, came with my 5D MKII

This lens cam packaged with my 5D MKII about 10 years ago. It stayed on my MKII and now my MKIV. It is a great "Standard" lens. I usually take coin shots with 50MM Macro, but I though I would try this lens for the review. I shot this with Auto ISO and Tv at 1/60. I have had trouble in the past with the coloring of toned coins, but this shot came out perfect. Don't hesitate to buy this lens ( or the MK IV .

24-105mm IS USM f/4L

Purchased from Canon’s website. I feel as if I wasted my money on this lens. I couldn’t afford a better f stop at the time and got the f/4. I was never happy and didn’t like my photos. It may very well work for someone else, but it wasn’t for me

Bang for the buck ....

Whether you get version one or two, this lens is a great walkabout lens for FF DSLR. Priced reasonably well new and a fantastic bargain refurbished price. Pretty darn sharp, especially stepped down, well built with IS. I like it better than 1st version 24-70mm f/2.8 without the IS.

Great Value

I bought this lens used from an eBay seller to round out my kit for studio shooting. I alternate between it and a 50mm f/1.8. I use this lens for probably 75% of my non sports photography and 100% of my video work. It's not quite as razor sharp as a prime, but it is more than sharp enough for most practical uses. There's a minimum amount of chromatic aberration and some distortion at wider angles on a full frame, but I actually like it from an artistic perspective. The IS is a game changer in video work and it is pretty nice in lowlight shooting too. The f/4 is a little slower of an aperture than I'd prefer but for the money it's a wonderful lens.

My go to lens

I have had this lens for several months now and it's my go to lens on my 5D M4. A great day light lens with great color. Also I have had some nice shots when set at f/4 60 and 30 sec shutter speen in moderate low light. A little post work and the pictures look great. A long with my 17-40mm f/4 and 28mm f/1.8 lens this is my most used lens. I feel like this lens does a great job when compared to the 24-70mm L lens and at half of the price. Budget was a main concern for me.

Great Walk-Around Lens

I first owned this lens when I bought a 5DII (on the first day they were available, 2009?, and finally sold the 5DII with the lens a year ago, expecting the new 24-105 L would be much better. But the new lens was reviewed tepidly, so I held off buying it. After a year, I realized how much I missed the great versatility of the original lens, and recently bought a refurb from Canon. Very glad I did. Have been traveling with it, used on 5DIV mainly, and also very effectively on SL1. Very happy to have it again. The negative comments (not great in corners, less effective IS) are valid, but for street photography and versatility, it is a bargain and produces fine images. And it feels great in hand, has pretty good closeup ability, is pretty unobtrusive, and replaces about two other lenses pretty well. I often need 70-105, and I love my 16-35 f4, but can get by with 24 if necessary (especially when traveling, and weight and simplicity matter).

Great carry lens for landscapes until Err01

I've had this lens for about four years now and I love it. I use it as a carry lens and take about 90% of my snapshots and nature shots with it. One day while on a paid gig, it stopped talking to the camera body and an online search revealed this is a common problem with this particular lens (Err01) and costs several hundred dollars to fix. This is not OK for an L series lens! Canon should fix this problem free of charge considering the cost of this lens.

Great everyday Lens

So it is "L" glass and it has a great range and like most of the "L" series is built like a tank. I hike a lot and this guy seems to be great for landscapes and for some outdoor portrait shots as well. I love having f4 through out the zoom range. More often not, this is the lens that is on my camera. I shoot with a 6D and 7D MKII and on both bodies, this lens (like all my "L" glass provides exceptional clarity. For the price point, it is hard to beat this lens. This was my first "L" glass and I agree with others; once you use a "L" series lens, it is hard to back.

Excellent all around choice

I got this lens with my 5D Mk II, and traded it in on the EF 24-105 f/4L II IS when I bought my 5DsR. Still waiting for the new lens to come off back order, and am regretting having parted with the old one. I used it primarily for fine art photography, almost always AP setting with f/8 or higher numerical apertures to get sharp images with good depth of field. The lens has but one flaw (if you use it like I did at high apertures to avoid the awful MTF at f/5.6 and below), and that is that the lens cannot be locked, which means that if you point it down, it slides out toward maximum focal length. My understanding is that Canon can't install a lock on any IS lens. If this bothers you, don't buy IS. By the way, the image stabilization system is wonderful, and sets Canon apart from all their competition. I've shot hand held at 105 mm FL at 1/15 second with no blur - that's two full f/ stops better than non stabilized! Who on earth needs f/2.8, unless you are one of those folks who prefers out of focus backgrounds and doesn't know how to use Photoshop or GIMP.

Great Lens

This is the best lens. I was using the EF-S f/4-5.6 IS and it takes beautiful photos but the lens takes photos 4 times as better. I recommend this lens.

Decent Kit Lens but "L glass" performance? Meh

I purchased this lens specifically with the plan to use it as a quality general purpose carry. This lens just isn't so brilliant at all around the edges (it's dark in fact) at 24mm, is a focal length that I use a lot, so I ended up buying a 24mm prime to cover for the deficiencies in this supposed "L glass". If Canon removed the L and the red stripe from this lens and reduced the price a few hundred dollars, I feel that it would be a good performing kit lens and a much better value. In addition, after having the lens less than a year with only moderate use, the focal length started creeping severely so bad that it would annoyingly zoom rather quickly to 24mm by itself when I was shooting above me and all the way to 105mm when I would try to shoot below me, so I had to dock it hard for build quality. Fortunately, Canon is repairing this under warranty, but will it start creeping again when I get it back in less than a year? No good! Worse than that, I had to foot the bill to ship and insure the lens back to Canon to fix their kit under warranty. Canon is releasing a newer version (the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM) which I would gladly trade in my current version to Canon for the new one and pay the difference in price hoping they got the bugs out of version one. How about it Canon, do we have a deal?

Very nice, versatile lens

I bought this lens for a several reasons: it has a nice coverage range and use it as my go-to, walkabout lens; it can be used for wide angle shots for landscapes or for portrait work. Second, it is weathersealed which is an important consideration living in often muggy and wet Taiwan. It has an f/4 maximum opening regardless of the focal length; this can be all important if you like to shoot in Av mode. As for drawbacks, the most notable ones are: weight, lack of lock (especially annoying) and subsequent lens creep and no collar for mouting the lens directly to the tripod. It does come with a nice lens bag and good lens hood. The hood has a fabric-like material inside, not shiny, polished plastic which would cause some lens flare.

My go-to lens 50% of the time

I tend to use wide angle lens quite a bit for the type of photography I do (landscapes, architecture, fine art), but when I need a non-wide for other subjects, this lens is always my go-to choice. Image quality is excellent, as is the build of the lens. One of my two favorite lenses I've purchased.

Sharp, all around lens.

Instead of adding this "kit" lens to my earlier 6D purchase, I didn't think I needed nor wanted it. Only one year later I realized what a great carry around lens this could be, plus reviews were favorable. My only complaint is barrel creep, previous reviews should there was no movement when angled down, my heart sank when mine did. It doesn't effect the quality of photos, but does require an awareness. Overall it has produced crisp, clear photos and matches my 17-40L f4 in weight.

Nice lens and easy to hand hold at 105mm

This is a very nice lens but wish it had a 120mm focal length. The lens is easy to hand hold and pictures are always sharp. I use with a Canon 5D III and use it for everything from shooting Belly Dancers to portraits to birds nearby. I am sure Canon intends this lens to be used with ISO 1600 and above because it is not fast enough for low light shooting. One less stop of light and double the ISO. With the Canon processors I find I can get great 11X14's with this lens at ISO 1600. The operative word is "trade-offs"

That'll do pig, that'll do.

I have gotten to see this lens on both a crop sensor and full frame (my 7DmkII and the 6D I bought for my girlfriend and on both sensors it performs superb. I like to shoot at the longer end of the focal range, and this gives me enough reach that I'm not wishing for more, and it's wide enough also for the majority of the shooting that I do (on the crop sensor). On the full frame sensor, it's a very different feel but is still a great and useable length. For those who like to shoot at the wider end of the range, but occasionally need the extra reach, it's perfect on your full frame. As for image quality, yeah it has some distortion at the wide end, but it's not a noticeable enough amount in my opinion. The lens is extremely sharp and neither of us have ever experienced any focusing issue with it. Each time it's just tack sharp. I am not easy on my gear either, and this lens has held up extremely well. I haven't had any issue shooting in bad weather with it either. Unless I'm shooting sports or portraits, this lens is always on my camera. And even then, sometimes it's still on my camera for some portraits. For the price, this lens is a no brainer. If you don't own an L lens, then get this one first. It's a perfect example of the excellent quality that Canon produces

Good wide range kit lens

This lens came with the 5diii I purchased right before a trip to Puerto Rico. I also brought the 50mm1.2 and 70-200mm2.8 ii and out of the three for that particular trip the 24-105 spent the most time on the camera as being the most versatile. So far I have no complaints about the lens and will be definitely bringing it with me on future trips as an all around travel lens. The size and weight are not bad. it took a little punishment in the rain forest(rain) and some more at the beaches in the form of sand completely unharmed. Overall I beleive it will be a good lens.

I'm a believer.

By S V.

I wasn't a believer in L glass, IS, or zoom. I believe that prime glass is very sharp, I wasn't going to pay for zoom capabilities since I would rather utilize my feet, and I wasn't going to pay for IS since I would rather have a faster lens. Chapter Two... Ok, so I gave in and I bought an EF-S 10-22 and I love the sharp images it produces. This lens is what got me off my high horse named "Prime." Shortly after I bought the wide angle I overheard from other users that the lens was "L" quality...

Perfect Carry Lens

By UpstateTom

If you have never tried a Red Ring "L" lens, you don't know what you are missing. Moving to a DSLR will always be a jump up from a point and shoot, and many of the regular EF and USM lenses are great lenses, but the "L" lenses are just that much better at everything they do. This lens turns your DSLR into the best point and shoot ever. I use this on on a 40D, and it stays on my camera most of the time. It is the right lens for most situations, and the image quality is exceptional. I have used...
