nice fill in flash

I bought this flash as a fill in flash for travel. I do not use flash a lot - my Canon 5D Mark III has very high ISO range. But sometimes it helps. The build is solid, the control is simple. In case of Mark III you can fully control the flash from the camera - put in manual mode (1-1/64), slow sync, etc. Most of the typical features for Speedlight flash. Another feature I found useful I can use this flash as a remote control for my camera. So if I am shooting from a tripod I don't need to car

In case of Mark III you can fully control the flash from the camera - put in manual mode (1-1/64), slow sync, etc. Most of the typical features for Speedlight flash. Another feature I found useful I can use this flash as a remote control for my camera. So if I am shooting from a tripod I don't need to carry any additional remote switch! Useful. When I don't need many lenses and just attach 24-105 to the body, it fits nicely in Lowerpro TLZ1 together with my camera and GPS unit. So I highly recommend this flash. I have other flashes, but they are too bulky for travel with a small bag.

Not useful in slave mode.

The Speedlite 270EX II does a fine job when used on-camera, but the slave feature is only marginally useful. Because having to aim the flash head toward the mastter (in my case, this is my Rebel T3i camera) in order for it to receive the signal emitted by camera's built-in flash, defeats the purpose of slave operation. Canon should have positioned the sensor on the 270EX II in a more omnidirectional location in the Speedlite.

Good flash

By

This is a good flash for the money. I don't want to lug around my 580exii its small enough to fit into a bag but just powerful enough to shoot 6 to 8 feet across the room It will also aim up for bounce flash. But it you won't be sorry

Not too "flashy" - Great Flash!

By

Just enough flash but not too bright if that makes sense. Doesn't make your subjects washed out or overly bright. Small, compact, not too heavy and easy to pack around with the rest of my camera equipment. Highly recommend. Lot of bang for the buck. Do yourself a favor and skip the big money items, this one works great!

Small, Compact and User Friendly Flash

By

I purchased the 270EX II for my Canon Rebel T5 because I could not stand the built in flash. The built in flash was weak and the fixed frontal position did not provide the proper lighting for my camera subjects. Now with the 270EX II, the stronger flash does provide a little more power along with the ability to bounce light by moving the flash to an upward position in three stages. The use of bouncing light has been extremely beneficial in making my subjects look more creamy and natural. I will admit that I have not yet gotten around to using the wireless flash settings, but the flash normally stays on my camera's hot shoe whether I use or not because I always want the option to switch it on if the opportunity demands it. I have been considering upgrading to the 430EX to have a more respected flash among photographers, but the 270EX II serves my needs better mainly because I enjoy the small size and it only requires two AA batteries instead of four (Not camera batteries). I would also recommend using high end Energizer rechargeable batteries with this flash (and flashes in general) because they juice battery power fairly quickly

Returned to Adorama. It was less effective than the built-in pop up on my 60D.

Perfect size for my new Canon SL1!

By

I have several Canon Speedlight 580ex ii flashes that I use with other larger Canon cameras but was looking for something small and portable to match my new (small) SL1. This flash is the perfect size to include in the bag with my SL1. It takes up very little space and does a great job of providing lighting for the quick "on-the-go" shots I take with this camera. The SL1 is my new take with me camera (previously had a G11 to carry around but wanted to be able to capture all the shots, which I was not always able to get with the G11) and the flash is a perfect addition. It's just the right amount of power with a great price to match.

Repaces a pop-up flash and then some...

By

If you've moved up to a camera with a 35mm film sized sensor, and you miss the pop-up flash that Canon somehow thinks you are now too "pro" to have any use for, this handy little flash will fill that void and then some. It is small enough to easily slip into a pocket. And it's also a bit stronger than a pop-up. Additionally, you can tilt the direction of the flash toward the ceiling for bounced light. You can also easily find a plastic diffusing "cap" to place over the flash head for softer light. I just took living room pictures on Christmas with a plastic cap diffuser and it offered a pleasant soft light that filled a wide angle view and was still more than strong enough for proper exposure. The two AA batteries don't last as long as I would like but that is a minor inconvenience.

Could be better

By

Flash takes too long to warm up. With fresh batteries it takes abot 15 seconds for the red light to turn on. Too slow in my opinion.

Ron C  Want small, bounceable flash to use on sx40 point & shoot camera. Does the sb270ex2 flash integrate any exposure data with the exposure system of the camera? Is this a good combination of camera and flash?
ROY B  I think this is a very good flash to use. It can be tilted to bounce. i've used it with very good results.
Ron C  Roy: Thanks much for your input on the 270 flash. I normally shoot pro gear, so point and shoot capabilities are unfamiliar to me. I have been quite happily surprised however, with the performance of the Canon SX40 and am looking forward--a la your review--to more from their flash. Thanks again, Ron
