The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens is a unique and indispensable addition to Canon's series of EF lenses. The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM offers an ultra-slim and lightweight design. Incredibly compact in size, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM delivers high image quality from the center to the periphery thanks to its advanced lens configuration including an aspherical element, a bright 2.8 aperture, and optimized coatings that minimize ghosting and flare while providing exceptional color balance.

The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM's unobtrusive design helps the photographer avoid overwhelming their subjects with a large lens and to remain discreet in sensitive shooting situations with no compromise in performance. Its diminutive design is complemented by features such as a newly developed stepping motor for smooth and quiet continuous AF while capturing video with the Canon EOS Rebel T4i DSLR, a circular aperture (7 blades) for beautiful soft-focus backgrounds, and a short minimum focusing distance of only 0.98 ft./0.30 m.

I needed this lense

By

from Largo FL.  -  Photo Enthusiast

This prime was what I needed to photograph a play, on stage, from a fixed position without using flash.

Wonderful lense for the price.

By

from Miami, FL  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought this lens as a walk around lens and for street photography since it is so inconspicuous and very light. I have L lenses but when I put this on a smaller Rebel camera I am very happy with it's clarity and versatility. It is a real bargain plus pairing it with a Canon 12extension tube gives you an awesome macro lens.

Very Sharp

By

from Fredericksburg, VA

This is one of the sharpest lenses I own. That said, I own the EF 24-105mm f4/L IS USM lens. It competes quite nicely with that lens. Enough said.

Great Walk-Around Lens

By

from East Lansing, MI

This thin lens is the perfect walk-around lens for a full frame camera and a decent portrait lens for a APS-C camera. Just add a protection filter and a thin sun shade, and you are ready to cruse the boulevard.

Amazing buy

By

from Greenville SC  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I have been a photographer for 40 years. When I saw the price on this lens, I didn't expect much but bought it anyway. I love it. Sharp and great color. I leave it on most of the time now.

Great Little Lens!

By

from Newton, NC  -  Photo Enthusiast

This lens just arrived yesterday and I think it will be just perfect for my purposes. I wanted a small lens to put on my 60D that had a large aperture ,a close focusing distance and did a decent job of rendering backgrounds out of focus. It allows me to fit my camera in my small purse/camera bag with room for the other essential I need. I great lens for everyday use and traveling light.

Canon Best Pancake Lens

By

from Honolulu, HI

This is the best Canon pancake lens. Very small, light weight, yet the build quality is excellent, with metal mount and good glass. Image is very sharp, even at F2.8. Focus is very fast, even in live view AF mode. With the STM, you may override focus manually at anytime. The only issue is the manual focus - this is not a true manual focus, when you rotate the ring, the motor will drives the lens, at the same time it make some hmm noise, that is not good when recording video as the mic pick up the noise. Also the lens will not retract when the camera is powered off. So far, I am very happy with this lens.

Great lens, great price

By

from Brooklyn, NY  -  Photo Enthusiast

I keep this lens attached to my 5D Mk III most of the time. It's sharper, smaller, lighter, and less expensive than my 50mm f/1.4, and so I'm only missing the low light performance.

Small & Mighty

By

from Minnesota  -  Photo Enthusiast

Love the size. Let's me put a decent lens on my DSLR and I don't have to worry about sacking it into anything. Makes my big camera seem small. It's a little slow to focus, so that's something I need to work on more when using it. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get a nice fixed lens where they want to have a lighter and smaller load to carry. I hope canon makes more "pancake" style lenses, especially wider ones.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Will this lens work with Cannon EOS 40 D camera?
KENNETH G  Yes. I have both and it works fine. Although its very cheap it is a very high res lens at its single focal length.
Shopper  what type photos would i take using the Canon EF40mmancake lens?
STEVEN L  I mostly use it for Portraits, Landscape photography & night photography. I sometimes use this lens with an external flash to get some unique sunset pictures. It also works really great with DSLR cameras that take video as well. I have a Canon 7D and I get great image quality on it. This lens is super cheap and takes some crispy sharp images if used properly. If you're looking for a quality lightweight lens and you don't want to spend a fortune, this is the lens is for you! I hope this helps!
D W  I have an canon 85mm. Need something that I can get closer with as some of my shoots are close quarter, but I do need the same quality as the 85 gives. Suggestions?
ANDRE S  If you are using an 85MM the 40MM pancake is going in the opposite direction ,It will Give you a broader more Wide angle of everything,I would recommend the "fuzzy Logic" !00MM Macro /normal lens it will give you ! :1 macro or can also be used as a straight 100MM lens. I own it and it totally rocks it is also an F 2.8 and i believe its 999.99, The 40MM on the other hand As a side ability will do Focus free Video shooting,They are both great lenses. but if you need to snug up to something and the 85MM does not cut it,Going to the 100MM will be the ticket Or if Money is not an Issue the F 2.8 70 - 200 Is another awesome lens,I own the pair of 27-70 and the 70-200 and they rock, the redesign they did on both of those lenses was awesome,And of course they are both L glass and both Hitch up to the 2 X III Or any of the younger gee ration Multipliers, Happy Shooting Peace
