Great all around flash with decent recycle so long as batteries are kept fresh.

I purchased two because the price was right that I use mostly as slaves to my 580EX II. They have worked fine without any issues.

[...] This is a great flash. I have the Canon 580 EX II also and the 430 EX works just as well and it cost much less. [...]

Great little flash that has a great recharge time. Used for a few sessions of strobist photography and it does have a power saving mode that can get irriating. Startup is fast and the ttl metering is nice to have. Manual mode allows zoom from 14-105 and power levels from 1/64 to 1/1. Only thing it's missing is a metal shoe foot and a built in optical slave.

This unit provides the versatility and output I was seeking primarily for outdoor fill flash. It is larger than I would prefer when hiking, however its features satisfy my needs. Buying Canon refurbished makes great economic sense. I have been satisfied with each of the Canon refurbished products that I have purchased from Adorama.

I'm very impressed with the two 430EXs I already have. So impressed that after much deliberation I've ordered a third referbed 430EX from Adorama. The savings isn't what it used to be (compared to a new 430EX II) but it will be identical to my current ones for simplicity sake and now carries a one year warranty. Now, I guess I'll hold out for a 550EX, 580EX or 580EX II for my fourth. This may be a while seeing as I think a three 430EX setup will be very capable.

I may only be a beginner but, I do know a good product when I see and use it. In my opinion this a great product.

Being on a tight budget I always look for the best bargains. This is as good as it gets! Every refurbished item I've purchased from Adorama has been just like brand new and this fash is no exception. The 430EX is light and powerful and a delight to use. I often use it in combination with other shoe mount flashes when shooting outside. I love it!!

The headline above says it all: a great light weight, compact flash. The ability to use it as a slave unit with my older 550 EX Canon flash (also bought at Adorama)is a definite plus. Oh, don't be scared off by the term "refurbished". I can't tell it from new. Cosmetically and functionally I can't tell the difference from the "new" item. A GREAT BUY FROM A GREAT DEALER.

A very solid performer. The 580EX provides more output, but for the difference in price, the 430EX provides great value. Very even coverage.

This exciting addition to the EOS System combines compact size and affordability with an added dose of features and sophistication. Improving on the previous model, Speedlite 420EX, the new 430EX can now be set into manual flash mode (full power 1/64). Flash compensation can be set on the flash unit, and manual control of the flash zoom head is now possible. Improvements in its circuitry make recycle time 40% faster, and since it is compatible with Canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as an affordable slave unit.
The Canon Speedlite 430EX flash unit replaces the Speedlite 420EX flash model asthe one of the most functional and powerful flashes in its class. The maximum guide number has been increased to 43/141 (ISO 100, in meters/feet), and the 430EX flash becomes even more versatile with the addition of a built-in wide panel, which increases the minimum focal length coverage from the previous 24mm limit to 14mm.
The Speedlite 430EX flash works equally well with film or digital cameras. Additionally, like its big brother, the Speedlite 580EX flash, the Speedlite 430EX flash unit includes features that digital photographers will find especially useful. The Speedlite 430EX flash is compatible with Canon's E-TTL II (Evaluative Through The Lens) auto exposure technology.
E-TTL II technology analyzes relevant information like subject distance to modify flash power automatically, resulting in more accurate flash exposure, even when shooting subjects of different sizes, reflectance or high contrast. Advanced technology automatically adjusts the flash coverage to help compensate for differences in focal length as well as the variable size of CMOS sensors on digital cameras. The new Speedlite also analyzes flash duration & battery charge levels to adjust white balance dynamically for stable & accurate color from shot to shot.
The new Speedlite 430EX flash unit includes other upgrades, such as a full-powerrecycle time that is approximately 40 percent shorter than its predecessor at just 2 seconds with NiMH rechargeable AA batteries. A rear LCD & intuitivelyplaced controls make other new features more accessible, such as adjusting manual flash exposure from full power to 1/64 in whole stop increments, & enabling the second curtain sync function. 6 custom functions are also now available, as well as a flash head that is more maneuverable & capable of moreangles for bouncing flash illumination than its predecessor.
The Speedlite 430EX flash also incorporates the high end features that make it an essential accessory, such as a 24-105mm auto zoom, locking hot shoe bracket, & the ability to be used as a slave flash in an E-TTL or E-TTL II wireless flash configuration. High speed sync & FE lock are also available, as well as a save energy (SE) function, a versatile feature set that delivers outstanding value. With all of it features & versatility, Speedlite 430EX flash becomes the next logical step in the EOS system.
