Questions & Answers

Shopper : can I use an older ae1 lense with the ef 50 mm camera?MICHAEL B : The Canon EF 50 mm lens is a lens, not a camera. The older Canon FD lenses that fit the AE 1 cameras are not interchangeable with the newer EF lenses. There are some adventurous souls who use adapters to mount the older FD lenses to the newer cameras, however.GIOVANNI C : If I'm not mistaken, the mount of the Canon AE-1 FD. In the canon 50mm 2.5 macro lens mount is EF, so can not ride in FD mount EOS objectives. However, there are adapters to do.JOHN E : Sorry, the EF & EF-S lenses are not directly compatible with the older AE-1 camera. The following was copied from Wikipedia: The AE-1 has a Canon FD breech-lock lens mount and accepts any FD or New FD (FDn) lens. It is not compatible with Canon's later Canon EF lens mount, though adapters made by independent manufacturers can be found. Original FD lenses, introduced in 1971, did not rotate in the mounting process; instead, a locking ring at the base was turned to attach the lens.
Janet P : Will this lens show a lot of detail on butterflies?C. C : This lens may not be what you want for butterfly photos, as you must be close to your subject to capture the type of detail I believe you're looking for. Butterflies tend to, well, fly away when you get in close. If you have unusually tame butterflies, go for it! Otherwise, your photos will be from a distance, and the butterflies will be a small part of a wider photo. I suggest a long lens with fixed aperture so you can zoom in tight from a distance and use a fast shutter speed with low ISO even in shady environments, or at sunrise or sunset when the lighting is warm but not very bright. Long lenses with variable apertures are going to make it more difficult to use a fast shutter speed without also using a high ISO when zoomed in because the aperture becomes so small. If you want detail, then you don't want the noise that is associated with higher ISOs. The amount of noise you have will be determined by the quality of your camera and its sensor, among other things. Butterflies almost constantly move, so if your shutter speed is too slow you're not going to have a crisp, detailed photo. As for this lens: I've managed some pretty solid photos with it. Of course, with a 2.5 aperture you have to be careful that you don't narrow your depth of field too much. I've carried this lens in a backpack for a couple of years: on international flights, on rigorous hikes, etc. and it has held up well. (Better than other lenses.) It's excellent for still life shots, as you have a pretty good control over your depth of field regardless of lighting as long as you're using a tripod. For subjects that might move (people, pets, etc.) you'll need better lighting in order to use a fast enough shutter speed to negate any minor movement without narrowing your depth of field too much. But those characteristics would be true of any lens of this length and f-stop range. The photo quality is commiserate with its price: you could spend more to improve marginally, but I'm not sure you need to.W.FRANK S : I use the lens for making 3d high resolution textures and it works great. For the money I'd say you can't go wrong.GIOVANNI C : Of course, with this lens and get great detail with butterflies will not be the exception. Your blur is awesome. I recommend this productLARRY R M : I would assume it has the same quality as other Canon lenses. I have not used for butterflies. I would think you would need a longer lens to get that close to butterflies, like maybe a 100 or 135. Mine is for normal pics and for flowers up close.JIMMY M : Yes for budget len. The 100mm 2.8 is better but cost more tooROBERT C : YesBORIS M : Yes. But since it's a 50mm you'll have to be very close to the butterfly.
Shopper : Compatible with rebel T3????GIOVANNI C : The canon 50mm 2.5 macro is compatible with aps-c format cameras (Canon T3) and full frame. In the Canon t3 will get 80mm lens ideal for portraits and macro photography.MKE J : Should be good depends on sensor size aps or full frameLARRY R M : Sorry, I have no experience with a rebel....I only have a 7D.DAIANA F : Yes I did this shopper a since ? I did understand the rinse you guy send this information for me

A bonus for use with APS-C sensor SLR

I carry this with my Rebel SL1 to give me a bit of reach. My most used focal length for my telephoto zoom and full-frame SLR is about 70mm. So, this 50 on my Rebel is super-sharp and is about an 80mm equivalent. If you happen to need macro, you've got it (moreso if you have the life-size adapter. And I've never used a sharper 50mm.

Stunning little lens!

When I first picked up this lens, I felt wrong about the purchase....it felt old and heavy, loud and clunky...but after I started to actually open my mind up to the features available to this lens, I quickly fell in love with its quirky style and unique abilities! This is my second 50mm (the first, the 50mm 1.8, was stolen), and I must say, I LOVE this lens far more than the first. It seems faster, is heavier, but only because it's built stronger, as well as better, and the macro settings blow me away. Yes, there is a learning curve with this lens, and too comes patience, but if you are patient with it, you will find that it is almost impossible to put down. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a great portrait/macro lens.

Worth Having.

Love the lens. Difficult to use in autofocus. Best results are when you manually focus instead. Glad I purchased it.

Awesome Macro Lens

This is an awesome lens for macro photography. I mostly use it to shoot miniature models at a local game shop, and delivers fantastic results every time. It focuses a little slow for capturing fast moving bugs, but otherwise perfect lens.

Great Lens

This lens is to be my "go to" lens for all of my close up work. Sharpest lens I have ever owned. Haven't used the auto-focus on it because I shoot manual on the close ups. You certainly can't go wrong if your lens is as good as mine. Great lens.

Nice little lens

This was my first non L series lens but after reading other reviews, I decided to give it a try. The other reviews are right. It's very nice. The picture quality is good. I'm also glad I bought it from Adorama because if you're not happy with a lens that you buy from them, you can return it (within 30 days).

Bargain Macro!

I purchased this lens mainly to use in copying my vast library of color slides. Paired with Canon extension tubes, a competitors slide holder, and a decent light source, it works terrific! My Canon 5D III makes much quicker files since I don't have to wait the several minutes for a regular scanner to do its scan, and I can see the results on the cameras LCD screen histogram right away. In addition doing white balance for the light source is a cinch. Since both type of copies require final retouching in Photoshop, the Macro is a much better way to go. It's much less costly since you already own a DSLR! Of course it works fine for traditional pictures too! The lens has been unchanged for years, so brace yourself when you hear the sound of the focusing motor... its from the beginning of EOS so just marvel at the fact that it's still around. However, it still has metal filter threads, and the optics are great!

Excellent High Quality Lens

Lens takes excellent shots of insects. Good depth of field, easy to use. Autofocus is great. Can be used for everyday family pictures if you don't have a standard 55 mm lens.

Best standard lens I've owned

This lens is on my 5D most of the time. It's extremely sharp and the contrast is excellent. You can't beat it for the price, but I wouldn't drop it. These days no lens is as tough as those made thirty years ago.

Primary Lens

I purchased this lens to complement the recent purchase of a Canon T2i. I had the choice of getting the 18-55mm lens or this 50mm f/2.5, I selected this lens as my first lens purchase because of reviews noting its sharp optical quality. As for the zoom, I figured I could use my feet to zoom in and out accordingly. I have used this lens for about three weeks now, and could not be happier with my choice. Since I use this lens mainly for still life projects, the motor focus noise criticism noted by others is not bothersome to me. In fact, what noise there is, is a nice audio clue that the lens is working for me. Hard to find fault with this lens, I like it a lot.

Best 50mm budget lens

If you are planning to go for a 50mm lens, I would suggest this lens. It not only takes sharp pictures wide open, it is also well suited for all purposes from landscape and portrait to macro. Though it is not a complete macro lens still it fairs well with 0.5x magnification. I have used my friend's 50mm f/1.8, which is no where close to this lens. 50mm f/1.4 can be a good competitor to this lens but still considering the price and the macro ability on this lens, 50mm f/2.5 van be considered the winner. The only difficulty with this lens is that it hunts @ low light situation where I can't trust AF and I will have to go for MF. And the AF is quite slow apart from that this is one heck of a versatile lens. A best buy for the money without breaking the bank.

Nice, but dated little macro lens

I bought this lens to photograph custom car parts and touch-up detail work on my cars to present on my website. I had forgotten that my Wife had bought me a Canon 60 mm f/2.8 USM macro the previous Christmas! The 50 mm f/2.5 performed very well. Though somewhat slow to focus it was not a problem for what I was using it for. After using the 60 mm Macro and experiencing it's very rapid, accurate and quiet auto focusing I decided to trade the 50mm Macro in . Again, no problem quality wise with the 50mm f/2.5 Macro , especially if you manual focus your macro shots and can live with the 1:2 magnification and the protruding lens barrel. It takes great photos! Five stars for Adorama service!

very good product

In low light loses focus speed. That's one of the biggest problems in this lens. But in good lighting conditions the color definition is impeccable.

Small and lightweight

I'm doing tests in different environments to see where I feel the most comfortable using this lens. I use it for some of my photography home-works. Surprisingly, I can focus on objects pretty far (example: 10 meters away). It is nice to see the focal length measures written directly on the zooming tube. It is nice that the lens is small and lightweight. Though the focus ring feels a little narrow. The magnification scale, the distance scale and the depth-of-field scale are a little confusing (too many numbers in a small area). Plus this lens has no image stabilizer so a tripod is necessary to use it.

Great Standard

Normally, I shoot with this baby wide open and up close. Anything I want to shoot macro, this puppy can handle at a 1:2 ratio. It's super lightweight and is my secondary lens. LOVE this lens, however, the autofocus is painfully slow and if you get in real close you need to manually focus. But I guess an F2.5 compact macro at such a great price point had to have a downfall.

Great lens

just bought the lens a week ago and absoulutely love it! i have got amazingly sharp images with it. the only thing that is difficult to photography with the lens is insects because of the close working distance and most insects are usually frightened by the loud auto focus. but overall it i would recommend it

Worth the Price

I am very much into macro photography and I really like this lens. Its great for taking photos of plants and flowers and things of that sort. Its also very lightweight. It can be little loud when focusing, but thats not a very big deal in my opinion. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase and it was well worth the money I paid for it.

I would reccomend this lense to anyone.

I do a lot of outdoor photography and find this lens to give clear sharp photos every time. The focus is sufficiently fast when in auto mode but can be a bit slow in manual. Like all macro lenses the depth of field is shallow but this is no problem if attention is paid to the focal plain.

Great basic macro lens!

This lens is a good, dependable lens. If you want a basic macro lens, this will do just great. However, it is not a "distance macro" lens- that is, if you want to shoot skittish insects from a few feet away this is not the lens. But even with only 1.5X magnification this lens does very well at close distances. To give you an idea, at its closest focal distance (9" or so?), the frame on my 50D is filled width-wise by approximately 1.8 quarters (25 cent coins). That is, it can fill a frame with less than 2 US quarter coins worth of width- not too shabby for a lens at this price. The image quality is great. AF is somewhat slow and noisy. Overall I am quite satisfied by this lens. PROs: •Great image quality •Fills a frame with less than two US quarter coins worth of space •Good price CONs: •Have to be pretty close to subjects to get macro •Slow AF

older design

50mm macro f 2.5 Good sharp and light- handy for those reasons slow focus has a lot of distortion when photographing flat art- requires correction in Photoshop to straighten the curvature.

Awesome macro for on the go!

I've had this lens for a few weeks now, and for less than 300 dollars its an amazing lens. Weighs hardly anything, has great image quality, and is compact, and decently rugged for the size and price. The only problem are the sloowwww auto focusing. Other than that, this is an excellent, sharp, good quality Canon lens. I highly recommend it.

Do not listen to them

A lot of folks on forums will tell you not to get this lens, get the 100f2.8, no get the 100L IS. Well, if this the the only macro you can afford, the get it and discover a whole new world. Sure, it is only 1:2, but on an APS sensor, it doesn't matter that much. I love mine, and use if for a general walkaround fast lens sometimes too.

Think again

I have had the opportunity to use this lens and Canon's 60 mm Macro for a week and while the 50mm is OK I was not impressed. Because it has an extending front element, and uses Canon's standard autofocus system, it takes an age to focus, whining all the way. Most disappointing was that I had understood that this was a 1:1 macro, and in fact the markings on the front lens barrel indicate this. What I didn't know was that you had to come up with another $250 for a lens extender (with optics) to do this. I would seriously look at spending just an additional $100 in the first place and buy the Canon 60mm 2.8 Macro, which has interior focussing optics, and focusses instantly and silently with Canon's ultrasonic focussing right down to a true 1:1. The additional focal length is also a plus, and it is one of the highest rated Canon lenses with a 9.4 Bob Atkins rating (compared to 9.0 for the 50mm.
