If the Canon lens web site indicates that the filter holder works with the 400mm f/4 then you will have no problems. The Drop-in 52 series is usually specified in the user manual for the lens. The manual for the 400mm f/4 indicates this series filter holder. It should work fine.

Great construction and fits well

I bought this for future use on a 300 2.8 lens. I will be using it for a UV filter on an Alaska/Canada trip later this fall. The unit is made very well and comes with a protective clear glass filter in place. I have not had an opportunity to use it yet but will soon.
