As far as on-camera flash, this is as good as it gets. The flash gives so many options for fine tuning that I've been extremely happy.

Great investment. Expands the range of what I can do with my camera.

Bought a second one to use the slave/master function. Going through the menus to set slave/master is a pain. What happened to the switch? I don't use it often enough for me to remember how to do it so I have to look it up each time.

This is must with any DSLR. Initially I purchased 430 EX but as soon as I upgraded to 5D Mark II, I upgraded my flash to 580 EX II and what an upgrade. Much better, consistent output and faster recycle time. This is definitely worth price and every extra cents well spent. The product even though "Refurbished" is almost brand new. There is absolutely NO Problem and I highly recommend it. I waited for 14 months before posting this review. I have taken couple of thousands pictures using 580 EX II and I'm thrilled proud owner of this wonderful piece of engineering.

The 580EX II is a great flash to have around. I use this for everything from fill to a main light depending on the situation. The one main drawback I find with this flash is that Canon didn't see fit to include radio wireless sync in newer camera bodies and newer flash units.

EX, which replaces the 420EX, offers more coverage and versatility, providing a desirable second flash for those who already own the high-end Speedlite 580EX and..
The popular Speedlite 580EX Flash has been replaced by the new Speedlite 580EX II Flash, which features a host of improvements, including a metal hot shoe withan improved locking mechanism for added durability, an external metering sensor for non-TTL automatic flash exposure control and a PC socket for use with non-dedicated slave triggers.
Fully compatible with all EOS SLRs, the Speedlite 580EX II is gasketed for dust and moisture resistance, making it possible for users of EOS-1 class digital SLRs and many L-series EF lenses to use flash safely when shooting in dusty or wet environments.
