Questions & Answers

Shopper : is this lens good for indoor concerts or indoor events?,thanks DanROB P : First, I love this lens. Second, it is very light weight, which makes it easy to handle for extended periods. Third, the stabilization works well and gives you roughly and extra 2 f-stops. Fourth, I have not used it much indoors without a flash (and I assume you would not be using one), but I see no reason why it would not give you great prictures if the stage or event was well lit. Of course a significant part of the quality of the photo depends on the quality of the photo you get at the ISO you have to use. Obviously the f/2.8 lens would be much better in low light situations, but at 3 times the price I suspect you will be plenty happy enough with the f/4. FYI, I have used the f/4L with both a Rebel T2i and T3i in lower light situations and obtained excellent results at an ISO of 1600 (sometimes with a little tweaking using Lightroom or Noise Ninja).VINCENT V : I sent an answer and looked up and it was gone. I will answer again in case you didn't get the first one. I'm still in the prosses of upgrading my camera and lenses so I havent used it yet. I read the reviews and a lot of them said it preforms great indoors. I'm sorry I can't say first hand but when I do use it I will advise you. Thanks! Vincent.DAVE S : I use it mainly for outdoor events, seniors, families, sports etc.. and it works great. I have not used it indoors much but as long as you can get a high iso you'll probably be fine. Quality is good for the price.. Dave, Manager, MJ Thomas Photo Inc.DAVID B : It will probably be good for indoor events, but, if the IS is not needed, the f/2.8 would be a stop better/faster for about the same price. The camera body will also help determine if the lens is good for the events. If you have doubts, suggest you rent an f2.8 for an event and then evaluate the results before purchasing. The cost of the rental could eliminate an expensive purchasing mistake.JOHN W : It works great for outdoor sports, fair for indoor activities. It only is an f/4, so it needs all the indoor light you can get. I have a nice external flash that helps alot with indoor shots. Hope this helps.KENNY H : No, go with a lense that is 2.8 or below, even at high iso, this lense is only decent for indoor n concert event. great lense though, and i mainly use mine for outdoor events with the occasional indoor(with good lighting).WADE G : Because its maximum aperture is f/4.0 you would have to crank up your ISO value to about 3200 minimum to be able to use it at concerts. If your camera will do that without too much "noise" in the image, then it would certainly do well in that environment. Most cameras produce a noisy image at that ISO level, but the newest ones are somewhat better.ALEXEI A : This is a very good lens, but for indoor events you need a faster 2.8 lens
Shopper : Has anyone used this lens on a Canon T3I?LESLIE S : I purchased this lense and love it! It has been a very good lense. I have not had any trouble with this lense. ROB P : I have used this on a T2i and it is fabulous. But what you should do is call Canon. They are very helpful and will tell you if you will have a problem (I'd be shocked if you would, but it never hurts to check).WADE G : I have not used it on that model. It should be a decent choice for that size sensor, however.WILLIAM B : Sorry I have not but have used it on a Canon 20D and 7D. It's a great lens. Can't image why it wouldn't work on your T3I. The refurbished lens was in perfect condition in the original box.JOHN W : Not on a T3I, but on a 20D, 60D and 7D (very similar sensor in the T3I, 60D and 7D), and it has worked perfectly across a wide range on conditions (-30F to +100F). It is super sharp from wide open down to f11, and begins to soften after 11 due to refraction. The stabilizer is a bit on the loud side, but works extremely well, giving me about 4 stops hand holding (earlier stabilized lenses only gave me 2 stops). It's hard to imagine anyone not liking this lens...
Shopper : Does that mean it is used?SAMI S : It's used, returned to seller/guarantee and then refurbished at Canon factory. My unit looks and works exactly like brand new. The only difference was the sticker in the retail box, saying "refurbished".Paul B : I think most of them are returns, checked out and sold as refurbs. Mine looked in brand new condition.JOHN W : Yes, it is used. The lens i bought is in perfect shape, can't tell that it has ever been out of the box. No complaints, great lens, use it alot. Hope this helps.ROB P : As I understand it, refurbished means that it may have been used. For what ever reason, it was returned to Canon to be repaired. There may not actually have been anything wrong with it, but it is checked to make sure that it is in "factory new" condition. Canon will only give a 90 day warranty on a refurbished lens (I don't know why) but as I understand it, Adorama will give a one year (basically the full manufacturers) warranty. I bought the lens you are aking about in August and saved $300 over a new lens. When it arrived it looked brand new. It has worked perfectly so far. I love it. It is a remarkable lens. It is very light and with the stabiization I can shoot at 200mm with one hand and get a crystal clear picture. From my perspective, if you are looking for this lens and you find it refurbished you should jump on it. No, I don't work for Canon or Adorama. I am actually an attorney in the Midwest who is also an avid amteur photographer.JOHN W : Yes, a litle used. Refurbished usually means the item was initially defective (right out of the box) and returned to the store, which in turn returned it to the manufacturer who then repairs and repackages it. I've purchased a few Canon refurbs, and if I hadn't known they were refurbs, I would have thought they were new. Sometimes, rarely, refurbs are store or rep demo items that show some wear, but these are few and far between. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurb, and if you're worried about the short warranty period (90 days), pick up an extended warranty from the dealer. You'll still come out ahead, and wind up with longer coverage than you'd get on a new lens. BTW: this is an outstanding lens!

Great lens!

I bought this lens to fill a gap and it has worked out perfectly. It also works very well with the 2X extender that I have in my arsenal.

Great lens takes sharp images

Own this for 4 years and it is a trusted solid lens. superb optics and the IS works quietly and effectively with little need to have a 2.8 95% of the time. Save your money and you'll not be disappointed.

Extremely sharp lens

I purchased the 70-200 f4L IS over the 2.8 IS as I use my camera for vacation and casual photography. The F4 is extremely sharp at all focal lengths. The advantages of the 2.8 are that it's 1 f-stop faster and has a shallower depth of field which while important comes at the cost of you hauling twice the weight and a much bulkier package. Both are great lens and I would not hesitate to go with the 2.8 of I needed it. That said, the 4.0 fits my needs better.

Second Time Around

This is my Second copy of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 IS USM. My First copy I had to sell Three years ago because of Medical reasons and I wished I never sold it. My Second copy is a sharp and contrasty from 70 to 200 and from f/4 to f/16 as my First one on my Canon 6D. Image Stabilization spec is 4f stops and it shows when I can get a Sharp Image at 200mm 1/30 sec when I do my part. The Lens is High Quality Metal Construction and Weather Sealed when you use a UV Filter. Highly Recommended.............

Incredibly high-level performance and accuracy

Focus accuracy and performance with this lens is FAST and ACCURATE. I use this in low-light events regularly, and it blows me away how much quicker it locks on than all of my other F2.8 lenses. This lens line is a sportster's dream (F2.8 obviously is better though. It's quite lightweight since it is F4 and not F2.8 as well, so it's a good mix of portability alongside having incredible image quality and focus performance. Owned for 9 years and going strong! Never needed a servicing either.

Great Glass

i've had my eye on this item for some time now to use as an all around lens. I was undecided on whether to get the F4 over the F2.8, but after reading many reviews, decided on this one. I'm so glad I did. It's lightweight and the quality of the glass and the photos it takes is outstanding. I felt I had achieved all I could achieve with my previous camera and lenses, and this purchase has really stepped up my results. You won't be sorry, if you chose to add this lens to your camera bag.

Great Lens!

I was hesitant at first due to it's pricing but after reading a lot of good reviews, I've decided to take a chance and purchase one. Without a doubt this lens is now one of my favorite lens as a part of my L lens collection. Pictures came out pretty clear although it's just an F/4L stop, it's durable and very light, the IS kept my moving object and focus stable. Overall, I would definitely get this with the IS.

Excellent Lens at Half the Weight

I had my finger on the button to purchase the Canon EF 70-200 mm F2.8L IS II USM lens for over a week. My hesitancy was not about the price, but size and weight. At 3.3 pounds and almost 8 inches long, the Canon EF 70-200 mm F2.8L IS II USM is a big lens and I was concerned about having to carry around another heavy big lens in my shoots, camera bag and backpack. I ended up purchasing the Canon EF 70-200 mm F4L IS USM at less than half the weight and over an inch shorter. What sold me on the F4 was a review I read by an event photographer that had both the F2.8 and F4 lens for the past two years and found that he always selected the F4 for his shoots because of the size and weight. So I put my finger on the button to purchase the Canon EF 70-200 mm F4L IS USM. I have used the Canon EF 70-200 mm F4L IS USM on two shoots and love it. The first was an outdoor shoot of a local mid-evil group that performs jousting and swords in costume and horseback. Each photo was perfect, in focus, sharp and properly exposed, both when standing still or riding their horses. After the three hour shoot, the lens and camera combination remained light and compact. The second shoot was a modeling shoot of models with various costumes using strobes and backdrop. Again the Canon EF 70-200 mm F4L IS USM performed flawlessly. The details and sharpness of the eyes, skin and hair was outstanding, while the background was soft. The camera (Canon 5D iv) and lens combination remained comfortable for the entire six hour shoot, even when hanging from my shoulder. I am very happy with my decision and know this lens will become one of my favorites. Although price was not an issue, I was able to purchase the EF 70-200 mm F4L IS USM and Canon’s EF 1.4 III Extender and still have some extra money in my pocket compared to the Canon EF 70-200 mm F2.8L IS II USM. I have conducted a few preliminary shots with the extender and lens and my initial findings are excellent.

Good, Just as I Expected

I spent some time researching the 70-200 f/4L IS and the 70-200 f2.8/L IS II and opted for the f/4 version. I was willing to pay the extra money for the f2.8 but read tons of reviews and checked out how well they performed on the DxOMark website and found that they are pretty darn close as far as performance is concerned. I also do a lot of traveling and hiking so I figured something lighter on the trail would work much better since the f2.8 version is almost 2x heavier. With the cost savings I decided to trade in my 17-40 f/4L and pick up this lens, as well as the 16-35 f/4L. Score!

Really beautiful lens

I decided on this lens as opposed to the f2.8 IS version of 70 - 200. This lens is incredibly sharp. It also lacks very, very little in terms of depth of field. It won out over the f.8 because of the huge weight difference. The weight difference on its own isn't that much but in terms of the overall weight of my camera bag the difference across an entire day is huge. I have lost out by not getting the f2.8 in one respect which is low light indoor photography. I'm not an event photographer so this isn't a major issue for me and when it is I can either get closer and use a flash or clean up the noise afterwards. If I were shooting in such light professionally though I would rent the f2.8. If this isn't an issue for you and you mostly want to use this lens outdoors in good light you can get the f4 without thinking that you have made a compromise. You're shoulders / back will thank you for it.

Great "go-to" lens

This lens is a great addition to my arsenal of equipment. The range of capabilities makes it my top choice for shooting a session- everything from a high school senior to a large-multiple-family session. This will be my go-to lens for years to come. My only "complaint" so far is that it seems to be very touchy. My frame will be crisp and clear to my eye, but when I late review the image it is not as clear as it appeared to be. This may also be the learning curve of the lens.

great lens, but IS is noisy

I have read hundreds good reviews about this lens before I bought this lens. However, I wan not aware the noisy of IS motor, because not many people mentioned about it. The quality of build and photo is very good. But I still like Canon 24-105 mm L, F4/IS more.

Overall excellent - but bad ghosts at night

Outstanding performance in well-lit situations. However not good for taking photos of the moon, sunsets with bright clouds, or night shots with bright lights. In these cases it produces a very obvious ghost image for each light source. Many of the online reviews either don't mention this ghost problem, or brush over it as inconsequential. I think it spoils night photograph in a major way. Unfortunately the ghost does not appear in the viewfinder, so one cannot compose the picture to reduce the effect. Instead one has to view the image after shooting to see how bad the ghost may be, then try another shot to move the ghost to a less critical position. Then afterwards crop the image to cut out the ghost. This is not what I expected from this lens. So I think this is a great lens, but not for high contrast situations.

One of the best lens, period.

I used to own Canon 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS and I liked it very much ... and I like this lens even more. The sharpness it produces is amazing and it weighs much less than the heavy f/2.8 one.
