The EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens - Versatile and Compact EF Lens

The EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens delivers the legendary sharpness and clarity of the Canon 'L' series lenses in a compact and lightweight design that is easy to use for hand held photography, making it a versatile lens for any photographer

Canon is the only manufacturer to provide a full range of professional zoom lenses in both the high-speed f/2.8 category as well as the compact and lightweight f/4 category. Rounding out Canon's f/4L lens lineup is the EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens.

This "L" series lens is designed for professional or advanced amateur photographers seeking maximum performance and versatility. This is a lens that can handle almost any assignment, ranging from distant subjects to the demanding requirements of up-close and personal portraits as well as nature photography.

The EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens stands up to the rigors of professional use. The lens is sealed from dust and moisture, and is equipped with the latest generation of Canon's Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, making it an optimal everyday shooter.

The image stabilization achieves three shutter speed steps of camera shake correction within 0.5 seconds after the shutter button is depressed halfway and yields correction for up to four full shutter speeds while handheld, providing a new level of performance. Users can also select two IS modes, one for stationary subjects and another for intentional panning.

The EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens is the same size as the EF70-200mm f/4L USM lens that remains in the EF lens line, but the new lens adds several valuable features. In addition to enhanced weather sealing and image stabilization, the EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens incorporates a circular diaphragm to create more natural looking background blur, and distance information to aid autofocusing and automatic flash exposure.

The lens also suppresses flare and ghosting with advanced coatings and optimal placement of its 20 lens elements in 15 groups. One Fluorite element and two UD (ultra low dispersion) elements thoroughly suppress chromatic aberrations for crisp photos throughout the entire focal range.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) provides fast and silent autofocusing, while the full-time manual focus function provides maximum control even when the lens is set for AF.

The Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS is commonly used for General purpose, Landscape/scenery, Landscape photography, Low light, Macro photography, Night photography, Portraits, Special effects, Sports/action, Travel, Upgrade, Video, Weddings, Wildlife, Wildlife photos and more. The Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS is most used by customers who consider themselves to be a Casual photographer, Enthusiast, Photo enthusiast, Pro photographer, Semi-professional, Semi-pro photographer among others. The Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS is popular because customers like the following qualities of the Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS: Consistent output, Durable, Easily interchangeable, Easy to clean, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Lightweight, Nice bokeh, Rugged and Strong construction

Does everything I expect it to.

I'm a photojournalist working in the field everyday for a newspaper, and I usually use my wide, but when I need the long glass, this almost always does the job. I hesitated for a long time about whether to spend the extra dough for the 2.8 IS, or just get the 2.8 non-IS instead of this lens, and needless to say I went with the f/4 IS. My thinking was, there are going to be a lot more situations where I need the 2-4 stop IS than the one stop aperture improvement. So far, I've had it for about 5...

So far, I've had it for about 5 months, and I have no complaints. People who say it's heavy just aren't used to professional lenses. Carry a 2.8 IS around for a while, and you'll appreciate how light this lens is. It's about the size of a tall boy beverage can, fits easily in my bag and doesn't weigh it down too much. It's about the sharpest lens I've used in the realm of Canon 35mm-type, focus is sharp and fast. Works great for sports. Even indoors, for the most part. The extra stop would be nice when the arena you're shooting in is really dim, but even shooting basketball it's better to shoot at f/4 anyway. I'm sure at some point, when I have more money than I know what to do with (which I'm hoping will be soon...), I'll break down and buy the 2.8 IS, but in the meantime, this lens is beautiful, reliable, light, sharp, and the zoom is smooth, silky and well damped. I prefer primes anyway, so I think I'll probably just get the 135 f/2L, 85 f/1.2L or 200 f/2L for portraits or whatever. The only negative I can imagine is that the lens hood is ugly as sin. Works like a charm, but let's face it, an attractive camera and lens is just a littttle bit more fun to own.Hope that helps.[...]

Great images-but let's you down suddenly

The lens is photographically great however the built quality / inner design is likely weak and seems to have flaws. I have purchased this lens 4 years ago from Adorama as downgrade for my f/2.8 IS mark one lens as it's way more portable and I don't shoot indoor sports nor weddings any more. I love the image quality, portability, IS and speed of focusing (non-IS version did not perform as good). Unfortunately even despite the "L" designation it failed after merely four years of light use and stopped focusing properly as the inner elements got loose and the dependable focusing was turned into "shake to focus". I never dropped the lens and I handled it very carefully, it still looks as "new". The Canon Service quoted $300 for repair. I never learned about what exactly was wrong with the lens. My conclusion ------------- 1) When considering Canon "L" lens don't forget to add $300 for every 4 years of light use into your total cost of ownership. 2) Even despite "L" designation, Canon US offers only 1 year warranty, consider purchasing other brand with longer warranty or purchase from other Canon subsidiaries that offer longer warranty. Sorry Canon - this is really a BAAAAD experience.

Fantastic lens!

By

Absolutely no regrets in purchasing a used EF 70-200 from Adorama! The lens itself is amazing although the weight (while less than the f/2.8)takes some getting used to. Easy to use with fast focus!

Great lens, can't compete with f2.8

By

This lens is incredible in every way - super sharp, great DOF, and much smaller and lighter than its f2.8 counterparts. However, in the end it could not compete with the speed and new optics of the f2.8 ver2, so I returned it and made the upgrade. But for the money and if you're not planning to show in any low light, this lens is a great value and makes beautiful images.

Awsome clarity

By

I am a semi pro photographer that made the switch from another brand 70-200 2.8 lens to the Canon 70-200 4.0 lens. I am in love , the new one is half the weight and size, clarity unbelievable, ease of use; put on camera and go. output is by far superior to the major competition and price point is the same. I love the ability to hand hold no monopod needed in most cases. I am so thrilled I traded my other "big Lens" and appreciate the support of the Adorama Team when selecting a replacement.
