Designed to deliver ultra-high quality images along with lightning fast operation, the new Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom lens brings a favorite zoom range to the celebrated Canon L-series of lenses.
It features two Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration, incorporates a floating focusing mechanism for sharpness from close up to infinity, plus an IS system that increases usability by approximately four stops.
The EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM features a function that prevents erroneous operation when the lens is mounted on a tripod or monopod. Gleaming white, with a removable tripod collar, dust and water resistant construction, and a newly developed Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum, its phenomenal performance and flexibility is assured.
For portraiture or to bring what's far away up close, this addition to the L-series is guaranteed to perform.

Wonderful Lens; Don't get the kit
Great image quality wide open to about f15. The stabilization really seems good for 4 stops and makes a big difference when hand-held. Images are sharp at minimum focus distance. I wish it had a tripod ring to use as a handle. Don't buy the kit with the junk Pro-Optic filter. Why does Adorama want you to ruin a great lens with an awful filter?

Fast focus, good image, good durability
I am an amateur photographer and I was looking for something with a little more zoom and quality than the lens that came with my camera. I have taken the same exact shot with both lens' and this one is a way better quality image.
I've used this lens for the past three years on 60D and a 5DIII bodies. The sharpness and operation are excellent and the stabilization is superb. I've shot sharp images at 300mm and 1/30 second! The lens works well for outdoor sports when on the 60D. This makes the lens an effective 112-480 zoom.
Sold my 100-400 and bought this for use on 7D and 5DII. Much sharper than older zoom, lighter, and more convenient. I also have 70-200 IS F4, great lens but now use only for backpacking and similar.
This is a very good lens that is very sharp on both the wide and telephoto end. I did have to micro adjust the telephoto end. That said I give this lens a 4 instead of a 5 due to the location of the focus ring and Canon's failure to provide a tripod collar. It is just too easy to accidently change focus while shooting hand held. A tripod collar would help mitigate this design issue.
I was looking for a lens that could take shots of wildlife from a distance. This lens certainly fits the bill and the IS helps in low light. I was also looking at the 100-400mm lens but the negative comments about its barrel focusing system pushed me towards this one. I don't think I will be needing any larger lens unless someone starts paying me to take photos!
I'm using EF 70-300mm L IS f/4-5.6 for year. No issues with the lens. It has a weather & dust seal. It has awarded as a best lens 2011 from EISA. This is a really best lens but it has a problem with night shooting, because of f/4-5.6. In dark areas it wasn't focus. However it deliver awesome picture quality.. super build quality. Easy to hand held.... i recommended & trust CANON stuff only.. Canon is the best... better if price down.
I haven't had this lens long, but I've taken over 1500 shots with it. It replaced an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. Although that is a fine lens for the price, it left me wanting just a bit better image quality. Shipping time was great, in fact, it was delivered early. The lens was in great shape, and I mention this because I just didn't know what to expect from a refurbished product. I do have other "L" lenses, so I knew what to expect in the way of image quality, and this lens did not let me down. Focus is very fast, even in evening light @ 300mm, and IS is really a dream on this lens. I was worried about that, but this one is excellent. It is a bit heavy, but still handles well and I haven't felt the need of the mono pod attachment. I read some reviews that complained about f/5.6 being a bit dark for an "L" lens, but I've been using an ISO of 400 in overcast and late evening light, and haven't had a problem getting crisp shots.
I don't know how an image can be any better than what comes out of this lens, especially on a 6D. The bokeh is very good if one shoots at f5.6. The only bad thing I can say about this thing is that it is heavy, but it's built like a tank. You can get a tripod ring for about $44, so don't spend $180 at Canon.
I bought this lense couple months ago, it is one of the best lense I've used. It works very fast, and quality is superb and totally takes a beating. It is the perfect travel lense for me because of the wide range of zoom. I really wish the price was a bit lower though...
