I bought this bag after searching for one that would allow me to go through TSA screening without removing my laptop. All I have to do is unzip it and lay it flat. (I suspect it is too large to lay flat in one of their bins, but it can always go on the belt.) I was surprised at how few bags complied in this way. This is not a soft case, and I believe it will offer excellent protection. The interior pockets are intelligently laid out. The only downside is that to get anything into or out of the side pocket, you have to completely unzip it. That means I probably won't be using it for my boarding pass. I can get things out of the main compartment with it half unzipped. One more thing that could be considered a downside: it weighs over two pounds. If you bought the new ultra-light macbook pro, you just gained those two pounds back. I decided it was worth it for the extra protection.
