Questions & Answers

Shopper : will it fit the canon t3?John E : It will work with the T3, but you'll also need a Cokin P series filter holder and an adapter ring that fit the screw-on filter size for the lens you want to use this with. The adapter rings are available in all standard lens sizes. After you screw the adapter onto the lens, the filter holder slides onto the ring. You can then insert your ND and/or other Cokin P series filters.GRAHAM B : Sorry, I am a Nikon shooter. It is OK for a 77mm Nikon lens.ELAINE O : The filter slides in a holder which is attached to your lens via an adapter ring. It's not about the camera, but the lens you are using. If you want it to fit on the 18-55 kit lens that has a 58mm diameter you need to make sure you get the adapter ring for that size. Hope this helps!WENDELL A : Check your filter ring size and order that size adaptor ring.ZEF S : It's not the camera, system fits on the lens. You buy a threaded adaptor ring same size as screw -in filters and a holder( p size) to hold the square cokin filter(s). Go on internet and search for Cokin filter systems. I believe adorama site has the info on the system.ALICIA L : I don't know, I have a Nikon, but what matters most is the type of holder you get. That needs to be the correct size for the mm size of the outer ring on the lense,. The camera body type should not matter. I love this filter, have used it numerous times.RICHARD S : It does not fit the camera it attaches to the lens. Look at your lens and how big the screw on thread is, this is printed on the lens. If it is the kit lens that came with the camera it is probably 58 or 62 millimeters. Then purchase the Cokin screw on adapter of that size which the filter holder attaches to.Allan B : The Cokin Series P filters are not camera specific, you do need to purchase an adaptor ring for each lens you own. Example I have 100mm Canon lens that has a filter thread size 58mm and a Tamron 10-24mm lens that has a thread size 77mm. I bought one ring for each lens I own to make it easier for me to move the Cokin filter holder to each lens I own. The idea for this system is that you need to only purchase only one of each type of filter you want and you can use it on all you lens. This saved me money as I only need to purchase one expensive polarized filter that will work on all my lens.CHRIS C : I hand hold these filters over mostly very wide angle lenses. They are large filters and will work with any camera, although the small the actual measurement of the lens, the less likely they will be effective.WILLIAM D : When used with a Cokin Series P filter holder and the proper adapter ring to mate the holder to your lens, yes it will fit your camera.JASON P : Should be able to. I normally hold the filter with one hand.JOEL B : You will need the Cokin filter holder and adapter ring appropriate to the lens size you are using. Whether this accessory works is dependent only on lens size. I have used it with lenses up to a 77mm filter thread size, and as low as 52mm. You will need a different adapter ring for each different lens size.Kenneth C : you need to get the adapter to fit the lens you are using.HOA B : Series P will fit with lens depend on the diameter's Size; it is not depend on the camera's model. good luck
Shopper : need 8x or 2x?LAUREL L : Without knowing what you are doing this is a hard question to answer. If you can afford to by two by the 2X and 4x or 6x. You can use them together or separately and have a greater range. If you are only going to by one go in the middle range. LaurelRUSLANS JULAJEV K : Buy 8x. You won't regret it!RICHARD S : Use 6 or 8x to tone down a very bright sky when the rest of the picture is considerably darker to prevent the ski from blowing out. ROBERT S : 8x will give you a 3 stop differential across the filter. Remember it is graduated; so, one end will be no differential and grow gradually to 3 stops under ambient light exposure. You control it by moving it up and down in the filter frame until darker area is seen to be correctly exposed, and brighter area is also correctly exposed. Hope it helps. bsENRIQUE P : I will use the 8x. I mostly use it for sunset.
Shopper : I am looking at the Cokin 121 Neutral density Filter..Is this considered a Hard-Edged Filter??CAROLINE F : Yes it's definitely hard-edged. Great series of filterSTEPHEN P : If by hard edged you are referring to the transition between the neutral density and clear area, then no, it is not hard edged. There is a gradual transition between the darkened area and non-darkened area.David W : I wouldn't consider this hard-edged though the area of graduated blend does look narrower than the P121M (2 stop grad ND) that I also own. This is likely due to the fact that the 3 stop filter is, obviously, rather darker on the dark side. The graduated area takes about 20% of the height of the filter to go from clear to dark if that's any help.JARED M : I would say it is not hard edged at all, it transitions rather smoothly.EDWARD M : This filter has a small area at the center that transitions between dark and clear - I purchased this filter because it is low cost and you can adjust it in the filter holder (vrs. A graduated lens) to match the skyline. It does have a somewhat hard edge but is very effective.CLIVE C : This is a graduated nilter it does not have a hard edge, I use this filter a lot it is my seccond one the first one I still have althoug it is has seen much use and got damaged , I would highly recconend this filter especially for landscape , or any thing where you need to ballance your exposure, Isometimes Iuse two filters together. CliveROBERT S : There are a series of 121 ND filters. One is warmer; one is cooler; etc. All are graduated and I don't see one that is hard-edged. Solid ND filers are: 152, 153, 154. (if you mean a point where a visible division is seen). Hope this helps. bob s.JOEL B : This is a soft edge filter. The 'graduated' in the name refers to the transition from clear to the neutral density area.JUN Y : I do not think so. It is graduated since it shifts gradually from dark grey to transparency.ERIC F : No, this is a soft-edged filterPAUL B : Sorry--I don't know. My best guess would be that it is "hard-edged". The band of transition from dark to light seems to be a little less than 1.5 centimeters.FRANK W : no, it is a soft-edged filter.

Helps balance sunrise/sunset exposures

The grad grey filter helps to provide a more balance exposure across the frame which is very handy for sunrise and sunset photography. It allows capturing the foreground as more than just shadows while preventing the sky highlights from being blown without resorting to HDR post processing of multiple exposures.

Great in every way but ...

... it's plastic, not glass. Nice gradual change from clear to dark makes it very user-friendly. Being plastic has one benefit - if you're clumsy like me and drop it, it won't break. However, the light transmission with any plastic is not quite as good as glass, but in the final photo that's really imperceptible unless your filter is really scratched up.

Decent filter

I thought this filter was decent. I do wish that it had a more gradual transition but it works good enough for me.

It does just what it is supposed to do.

This is a good graduated ND filter. I hand hold it in front of the lens. The best ones are glass and much more expensive. I have to be more carful with Cokin, this works for me.

Great for sunrise and sunset photos

This filter is great for capturing sunrise and sunset colors. Just slide it in the Cokin filter holder and adjust the transition line to match the horizon. The filter balances the bright sky and the dark landscape to bring out all the details.

Budget Friendly GND

This is probably the most affordable GND on the market which is why this is the second time I've owned this filter (the first one became scratched and was then lost). As with most of the lower end Cokin filters, they are plasticy, can scratch very easily, and are likely to add a slight magenta tint to the darker end of the filter. That is a given. Sometimes you may want to stack this filter with a stronger ND for longer exposures but your image will have a STRONG magenta tint throughout. But if you're on a budget and don't mind a little post-color correction, this is fine. I would advise making sure to purchase a soft filter pouch, as the plastic containers that P-series Cokin filters come in don't do the trick and because they will scratch or chip within them.

Makes a big difference!

I purchased the Graduated ND filter after reading Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure." I ran some test shots following the guidance in the book. What a difference this filter makes!

Great budget item to start with.

I was most interested in the Cokin P holder and bought this so I could acquaint myself with utilizing the complete system. While I do plan on experimenting with other filters, but this will suffice and works great.

Great Histogram Fixer

Great to correct a histogram that shows a peak in the dark range and a second peak in the very bright range. Using this filter allows the exposure to be more consistent. A grouped histogram allows better manipulation of brightness and contract without blown or underexposed pixels.

color cast, otherwise great

Mine has a slight magenta color to it, only in the darkened half. I actually like the effect it has on sunrise/sunset photos, which is what I mainly use this filter for, so I didn't bother trying to return it.

Great filter!

I bought this filter to help me deal with bright sky backgrounds. My first use of the filter was in Spain where we had very bright light much of the day. Since I was not able to always time my photography due to travel, the filter really helped with situations with particularly bright light in the background. Blues in the sky were deepened and the balance of light in the photo was really good.

I really like this system of filters. However, not when I am in a hurry. Takes a little longer to put on camera, than a screw type filter.

Grad. Neutral Density Filter

Helps to controll bright areas for a more consistant tonal range during exposure, especially with bright skies. I used the rectangular filter, which allows me to position it where I want.

FEATURED REVIEWS

does the job

By Steve

I already had the Cokin ND4X graduated filter, but I found that it wasn't enough for many situations with bright skies. So far the ND8X appears to be doing a great job. I still need to test in more extreme situations, if the skies would ever clear up here in Portland. But even with cloudy skies, the results were interesting/dramatic. This is a good filter to add to your collection!

performs as advertised

By Charles D.

works great for toning down overly bright sky

The Cokin Hard-Edge 3-stop Graduated Neutral Density filter helps darken specific areas of the image, like bright skies, while leaving other areas of the image unaffected. The filter is most dense at the edge and tapers to clear at the middle, with a hard-edged line of transition. A neutral density filter with a hard-edged line of transition is useful for images with defined horizon lines. Neutral density filters do not affect the color of the image while creating a more balanced exposure.
