Questions & Answers

Shopper : What exactly are you suppose to see through the NexStar 102 SLT ? I can only see the moon with some detail, EVERYTHING else is just little dots of light, no detail or anything other than dots of light. Is this what I'm suppose to see ? Only the moon detail ?DONNA H : We use ours for everything; elk, deer, fox, eagles, rock formations, etc. As far as celestial, you don't see detail of stars as you do the moon. You should be able to see specific stars, groupings, etc. Stars are very bright so I guess thats what you consider dots.LAURA H : I have seen the major planets including Jupiter's moons, and most of the Messier objects as well as other open and globular clusters. Remember that you are looking at celestial objects some of which are thousands of light years distant. Stars always appear as points of light. But many of the Messier's have nebulosity with them. Right now, you can try M42 in Orion. It is a very nice object in the 102.PAUL M : Stars, regardless of distance or size, are all points of light though they vary in color and brightness. Galaxies and nebulas are lovingly called faint fuzzies. Try pointing your scope at M42. Subscribe to one of the astronomy magazines. Read a very simple book on astronomy, then another. Learn the constellations. Your journey will be long and unending but also rewarding if you give it enough time.
Shopper : Can this Telescope be used for photography? How /Can you attach a bridge camera to it? For example a Panasonic FZ200? Is it easy to do so?ANDREW R : I believe that with the proper adapter ( http://www.adorama.com/CNTA1Q.html ) and matching t-mount (specific to the camera one is using) that theoretically you could use this telescope with a still image camera. Such use would likely be limited to interchangeable lens cameras. Unfortunately it may incredibly difficult to use a bridge/super zoom or point-n-shoot camera with this 'scope.
Shopper : is this telescope good for planetary and deep sky observations? even though it is a small aperture and a limiting magnitude of 12. what can I expect to see with this telescope? even though views would be small because of its fast focal ratio I assume a barlow lens would help out a lot?DAVID G : Hey by the way, I realized that the celestron c8 might be way out of your budget. Have you looked at the NexStar 6SE GoTo Schmidt? It has 6" of aperture and the focal ratio is 10 (1500mm/150mm). So it's probably better than this small refractor you're considering by a lot. I think you will be happy with it especially if it's your first purchase.DAVID G : hey, this is so weird. I got your question in my email...lol Ok, here's my opinion: this telescope is not good for either planetary or deep space observations. Remember that for a good view of planets, you need longer focal length. You might think a barlow lens will fix the problem, but that is not true because of the quality of the optics. For refractors, you need apochromatic corrections ($1000 tube assembly and up) for a "fast" scope to perform well under the barlow trick. Also, you won't see great views of deep space objects. But then again, if you love astronomy and this type of exploration, you would love seeing anything and everything even using a 2.4" telescope. That's how I was in jr. high school. But now for deep space and planetary I use a 9.25" schmit cassegrain from celestron and the 120 mm ED skywatcher apochromatic scope. Granted, you DON'T have to spend this much money to enjoy the hobby. And to get good views of deep space you'll need to drive into the desert anyways. So to help you out, spend the money and get the 8" schmit from celestron to get a balanced, satisfying view of deep space and planetary goodies. Hope this helps.ANDREW R : While this scope should be sufficient for terrestrial and planetary viewing, deep-sky observations will likely be extremely limited by the small aperture. Magnification is only a portion of the deep sky viewing equation, light gathering ability is probably more important. A reflector type telescope (of which there are several sub types) with a larger aperture would likely be better suited to deep sky observations.

Amazing telescope!

As a starter telescope, it is way better than what I expected to arrive. My only "issue" would be that the telescope does not rotate as quickly as I'd like even at max speed but aside from that it works great! Definitely worth the buy

Celestron

Ordered my telescope which was on back order but I got it sooner than I thought I would. Set up was easy and I love searching the stars.

Great Little Scope

I recommend the scope for lunar and planetary photography. For those who are comfortable taking longer exposures, it is acceptable for deep space as well.

Alignment

This scope requires 3 stars to align for the computer to work. The telescope must be level. I have had this scope about 3 yrs now and I still have not been able to balance this scope. Other then what I have said, The optics are good for a beginner.

Great Beginner Telescope

This is my first telescope and I am very pleased with it. The clarity is amazing and when dialed in correctly will follow an object through the sky the entire night. Of course I'm usually bouncing around and checking out several sights so I don't zero in on just one thing for long periods of time. But you can return to an object with ease which I have done many times. Honestly, this telescope has not disappointed at all; it's easy to transport, easy to set up and easy to use. Hope you enjoy!

Good beginning telescope

Purchased additional camera mount but too much wobble when pressing shutter button. Able to view Saturn and rings with 15MM lens. Starfinder lens takes getting used to but must be aligned properly to work correctly. Good beginner scope!

Great But sightscope seems poorly made

I use the scope to watch the space station and the moon. This is my first telescope, and other than the sightscope giving me a feeling it has a short, its wonderful. I will add The software provided seems old and feel the instruction book could use a major overhaul. It would be nice if the cord to update the Nextar firmware was provided instead of being an antiquated extra part. This is my first telescope EVER and well, it doesn't just come out of the box ready to go. Overall, a good buy, BUT again more information should be included.

What a great buy

This is a fantastic deal for a refractor telescope. This is my 6th telescope. I have newts and schmits. My best schmit is a c8in and nwt is a 12in. This is my first refractor. I always wanted one but cost for aperture was was too expensive. The slt 102 seemed worth a try. I am so happy I did. I wanted a good grab and go and this is it. I already had a good 2in diagonal and put that in it right away. So i'm not gonna trash the 1.25 that comes with scope.I read bad comments about the star finder scope and have to say maybe these people got a different finder scope. I love mine. Works great! For twice the money you can't do better!

I would buy this product again

GoTo is not perfect but gets me close. Wish I could afford a bigger telescope but I think this is a good choice for the price.

Perfect telescope for anyone

This is a fantastic telescope for a beginner or experienced astronomer. By upgrading the eyepieces and diagonal you'll get a high quality observing instrument. Beginners will have a small learning curve but once you understand the controls you'll be able to tour the universe. I have many telescopes from Celestron and they're are all large 11". This 102mm is highly portable and is a joy to use. I rate is 5 stars!

Spend a bit more and get something else

SLT handpiece light flickers on and off after a while, making a torch neccessary for using it. View is very limited with supllied eyepieces. Unstable. Hard to focus due to instability. Basically, the SLT doesn't work, we can never find 3 bright stars that it recognises. It is a kids toy product, buy something else!

OMG! I can see Jupiters moons!

I found the scope simple to setup and simple to align and stayed in alignment pretty well. The optics seem to be of good quality for the price and the goto feature is just wonderful. The focus knob is too close to the main eyepiece causing a more unstable image as my finger bumps into into the diagonal after a 1/4 turn. A glow in the dark bubble mount would have been a nice touch as well.

The popularity of Celestron's previous short tube refractor models inspired us to go a step further with the introduction of Celestron's NeXStar 102 SLT. You'll find that astronomical viewing is a delight with this large, powerful 4" telescope. The 102 SLT offers a 63% increase in image brightness over 80mm models. This short-tube telescope with a fast f/6 optical system gives images that are bright and crisp. And the 102 SLT, like the other models in the SLT Series, comes with a fully computerized hand control with a database of over 4,000 celestial objects! With its pre-assembled, adjustable steel tripod, the NeXStar 102 SLT can be up and ready to use in a matter of minutes. The SkyAlign alignment technology and the included StarPointer Finderscope with a red LED makes aligning a breeze.

Because of its wide 1.7 ° field of view, the NeXStar 102 SLT is optimal for scanning large areas of the sky and for superb terrestrial (land) viewing. A wonderful entry to mid-level astronomical scope, with the use of an optional erect image diagonal, the 102 SLT can also be used as a land-based spotting telescope.
