You need the rest of your CGEM mount

I have a CGEM that this device fits right into. The CGEM has "All-Star" polar alignment so you can get perfect alignment without this device but by using this you get almost perfect alignment the first time, so this saves you time and hassle. I got tired of being well over a degree off the first time so I bought this and I am glad I did. If you use your CGEM for astrophotography I highly recommend getting this Polar Axis Finder. Now here are some complaints. You have to center the reticle after you install the device. The instruction sheet has a picture of the device with arrows pointing to the wrong screws. The screws you need to adjust (there are 3 of them) are Allen screws. You will need a 1.5mm Allen which does not come with your purchase. I had to go and buy a metric Allen set. The other complaint is that the reticle appears to be for the year 2000 and I doubt there is an upgrade available. I guess with practice you can guestimate the offset needed. This is minor. The reticle has cartoons of the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia. The field of view is way too small to see the actual constellations. Instead you rotate so that the cartoon is oriented with the actual constellation. Then you adjust your mount so that Polaris is in the tiny circle in the reticle. You can do all this before attaching the telescope, guide scope and camera, while your mount is not so heavy. Celestron advertises this for the CG-5 and CGEM and Adorama advertises it for CG-4 and CG-5. One reviewer claims that this won't fit into the CG-4 but it does fit into my CGEM.

Does not fit CG-4!

I wish it worked but it is just too big, this finder scope is Celestron #94224 (for the CG-5) but for the CG-4 you need #94223! (that has been backordered for +6 mo)

Not illuminated.

Hard to use with dark sky. I prefer illuminated polar scopes, but couldn't find any for my mount.

A waste of money.

By

The product screws in and the adjustment screws use hex keys to adjust but the scope won't adjust easily at all. It frustrated me for two months so I threw it out.

Wish the reticle were lighted

By

quick polar alignment of CG-5 mount (CG-4 requires a different model), but the reticle is very dificult to see at night. Holding a red light near the objective end helps.

Fits CGEM mount. As always great Adorama service! I've purchased DSLR cameras, telescopes, lens and many accessories from these folks - always fair, helpful and timely shipping

Questions about this item:

Shopper  what is the power?
RON T  I don't know. That being said, the finder is designed to place Ursa Major and Cassiopeia aligned with the images in the finder. This places Polaris in a small circle within a larger circle centered on Celestial North. With the mount leveled, (very important), and the images aligned, the mount will be centered on the NCP. Great for visual but I wouldn't do any hour long imaging.
