Questions & Answers

Shopper : is it compatible with all routers? especially netgearwndr37000MICHAEL A : It should not matter what router you hook it up to.JAMES B : Not sure, but works well with my linksys nrt120nJOEL D : Yes it is. Works splendidly!
Shopper : Does this model have WiFi capability? I didn't see anything about it in the description.MIRAJ C : It actually has built in WiFi that you can activate using the in browser software. You do have to attach it directly with an Ethernet cable at first but you can set up the WiFi and then disconnect the cable.WILLIAM W : The unit I purchased in Feb was described as having wireless capability, however I have never tried it, just connected it to my wireless router. Even though the color is the same as mine, I am not sure that it is the same model.BRIAN D : No, it does not hvae WiFi capability. It must be plugged in(with the included Cat 5 cable) into a router. I just plugged it into the wireless router. Simple to setup.SHAYA T : Complicated I know. It plugs into your router via Ethernet Cable. The software allows access to your Hard Drive. The information transfer is done however via the Wi-Fi from your ROUTER to your device. Hope that simplifies it.
Shopper : Does anyone know how this comparres to the Buffalo Cloud 2TB unit?RICHARD D : Pogoplug alows up to 5 USB storage devices so on line storage is the sum of up to 5 USB drives. Note : no drive are supplied with it you have to purchase them separately.MANJERI R : I do not know. However, I prefer pogoplug since you can add any external hard drive you want and it save money too. I am using pogoplug to access my documents and files from any location where I have access to Internet. If anyone has any other question, I would be glad to try to answer.MATTHEW L : I believe the buffalo unit is a standalone NAS. In other words it is only accessible via your local network that it is attached to unless you modify your routers access security. I have this Pogoplug. It varies in that it is essentially a NAS server that you plug separate USB drives into. Also, it allows you to access it from a web page anywhere, your iOS device via a free app or your local computer via a drive letter. It works great, I like it because you can have several USB drives plugged in and the interface is really simple to use.

Cheap but useless

As others have suggested, the official Pogoplug service is somewhere between dead and dying. I had hoped to use the web interface to enable ssh access, then turn this into my own linux box, but even that doesn't work. So now, I'll have to take the thing apart and solder in headers for a serial connection in order to replace the OS. Not really worth my time.

It's over, apparently.

My last pogoplug device, faithful and true, seemed to give up the ghost a few months ago, no longer connecting to the pogoplug server (yellow light.) Understandable, since it had been plugged in, running for years. Got this one --awesome! But, no, it too no longer connects to Pogoplug servers. I played around with both devices, getting each to briefly connect through the PP webpage interface, then disconnect again. I haven't changed anything in the rest of my network, though there may be some shenanigans with Charter - who knows? PP as a business has reportedly been having big money problems and no longer adequately supports it's user base. This device is now cheap enough to hack as a linux server - might as well. Heck, it's cheap enough to tile my bathroom.

good but not pefect

I only wanted this for access within my home network. Can't figure out how to block external access. To use locally you must download pogoplug drive. It works but looses connectivity after the computer sleeps and must be stopped and re-started. Minor annoyances but still worth it for the price.

Eco-Friendly NAS/CLOUD - But Limited

It's a great device for creating a eco-friendly NAS server and Cloud device out the box, but the amount of supported file formats pretty much render this useless if you plan on using this to stream movies or music.. For example MKV and OGG are not supported and may mean something to those looking for that functionality.. It also has 4 USB ports (1 front, 3 rear) and you can use USB hubs for more expansion.. I took this device and rooted it, installed a modified uBoot loader on it and Archlinux on a USB stick so that it boots up into Linux from the USB stick when it powers up.. Then I setup a Samba server sharing 2 external 2TB hard drives that are attached to it.. I made sure to format those hard drives to EXT3 file system because NTFS formatted drives have really poor transfer speeds over the network.. Basically, I get about 15 to 20MB/s transfer speeds on EXT3 versus 3 to 5MB/s on NTFS.. And the best is that I can stream ALL TYPES of files over my network.. I did lose the Cloud functionality as this setup is independent from Pogoplugs' servers, but you can get free cloud storage everywhere these days.. My main objective was getting a cheap NAS server running in my house and I achieved that with this setup.. The added bonus of running it economically with low power requirements is just icing on the cake.. If your willing to hack this device and go through some easy step by step linux programming (google pogoplug archlinux), you will enjoy the benefits of a very low cost and eco-friendly NAS server in your home.. But if you decide to go stock, it's still great little device, but you may be disappointed by the lack of supported file formats it can handle..

I use the Pogoplug to share media to all the computers in my home.

I use the Pogoplug to share media to all the computers in my home. It was fast and easy to setup. I have applications for all my computers, my smart phones and my tablets. Plus I can access this from the web so my files are available anytime from anywhere.
