Not a tripod name that you think of when looking for a good tripod in the US. But the Cullmann 519 is a great value, and great tripod in every right. The build quality is excellent with this tripod, and very well engineered, what else would you expect form a German design tripod. The tripod is very stable under a heavy load, since it is the most important thing when looking for a tripod. No worries that it will tip over, you can put you camera bag on the hook on the center pole to add more weight. The pan head is very smooth in operation. And it is all metal. It also a grounder for low to the ground shots. If the center pole is to long, just remove it, and install the short pole that come with it to get it even lower. The 519 is light enough to bring with you on hikes. The built in level on the legs is a nice feature. The quick release work well, and it keeps the camera secure to the tripod. Also the quick release plate has a twist tab to tighten the 1/4 screw. No need to find a coin to lock the plate to the camera. If you want to make the tripod more compact for travel, you can reverse the center pole and put the head into the leg. This gives the tripod an even shorter profile. I had no problem fitting the tripod into a 22 in trolley suitcase. Overall for the price, you will be hard press to find a better tripod.

Made in China

Don't buy this product. The Adorama salesman touted this product as the best thing since sliced bread. One of the retractable legs does not work properly. It is not a quick release. The tilt feature does not work. When I came home from a shoot in Rocky Mountain National Park in CO I looked at the box which said Cullman Germany and had a small sticker Made in China. This is what I expect from Made in China but NOT Made in Germany. Now Adorama will not even take it back.

Solid Build. Problem in under 6 mo's

By

Originally, I was impressed with the quality of materials and construction. the only good thing i can say at this point is that the quick release and grip to the camera is decent. in under 6 months, 2 of the clamps developed creep. i missed a moon shoot due to loose allen screws with no wrench handy. also, the gasket from the optional handle has threatened to fall on several occasions. Adorama tells me that i need to deal with the manufacturer to get this warranty fixed and cullman was closed for 2 weeks (holidays). i've tightened them myself and downgraded this to a backup while i look for something better. the tripod seems to be at its weight and stability limit with a nikon d5000+2 battery grip and a 70-300mm lens (and/or sb-600 flash). i never weighed it down but i doubt the leg clamps could take any more weight, anyway. i will not purchase from cullman again.

Great Tripod!

By

I was planning on purchasing a $179 tripod when the man who was helping me (I think his name was Larry and he was SUPER awesome/helpful) suggested this tripod instead. Sturdy, easy to carry, and coincidentally, the exact height that I needed (without checking beforehand - dumb, I know). A great tripod and sturdy (already dropped it down stairs once). Thank you for your help, Adorama!

I think this is a cost effective and safe tripod for beginners like me. A ballhead would make it much better.

Great product for the price

By

from Wilsonville, OR  -  Casual Photographer

I was impressed with the quality when I received it. I bought two others at big-box stores and returned both Manfrottos, too much plastic. I contacted Adorama and they suggested the Cullman and it is awesome for the money. I am a casual photographer and use a T3i / with grip, kit 55-250 lens (heaviest for now), 430EXII flash and it is solid and stable, even fully extended. Long exposures are no problem. The QR plate is sturdy and fits securely- the others had excessive play. If you are looking for a tripod in this price range you will be satisfied. This isn't a pro tripod but for the casual user it should be work great.
