Save Your Money and Skip This One

The pins in the card reader slot bend easily making the unit unusable. You can never tell whether or not your file has actually uploaded with this unit. You have to guess by calculating the number of remaining GB. I lost some great photos because this unit simply stopped uploading in the middle of reading my memory cards more than once. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT.

Great Backup when traveling

The Digital Foci Photo Safe II is a good backup at a low price compared to other photo storage devices. No, there is no viewer, but that makes the price better. I have used mine on airline trips for wildlife photography when weight was a problem -- meaning no laptop. Carried it in my camera equipment backpack on trips to Kenya, Tanzania and Alaska and plan to use it many more times. Actually I have two so I have double backup.

I have recommended this to family.

I bought the photo safe to backup vacation pictures taken in Ireland and the UK. The capacity was more than adequate for the 2300,ten mp shots I took.

Junk

Junk product. Worked well for 3 months and then it simply stopped reading my memory cards. Unfortunately, it stopped the morning of a very busy day of shooting professional sports. Buy/use at your own risk. Strongly do NOT recommend this product.

Digital Foci Safe - Disappointing

I have the earlier version of this product and it works fine, but I needed some additional capacity so I ordered this model. Perhaps I got a lemon but I'm more inclined to believe there was some cost cutting in the manufacture of this newer model because it stopped working within 1 yr. What a piece of junk!

Don't trust what you can't see or verify

I bought this device about two months before I went on a trip to photograph Arches National Park in Moab, UT. All of the photos I took comprised segments of large panoramics to be sold to some local clients. Yes; I tested the device thoroughly (or so I thought) by taking numerous practice photos and then transferring them to the Photo Safe II...later retrieving them by copying to my PC. I used three different CF cards from different manufactures in 16 & 32 Gb capacity. All seemed to work fine. Fast forward: I'm back from Moab after taking 125 GB of photos (6,000+ images). Anxious to process and review my panoramics I started off-loading my photos from the Photo Safe II to my computer. All is well for about 10 minutes when my computer freezes up. I try again and again, only to find that there are numerous corrupted files (photos) on the Photo Safe II that won't download. I re-boot my computer into Safe Mode but again the copy process hangs up; I then go to good old DOS and start working with XCOPY commands but again, no luck. I tried this on two other computers only to come to the same results. There were in fact corrupted files on the Photo Safe II that just wouldn't copy over. In fact it turns out that close to 25% of my photos are lost forever. The loss of files would have been more like 40% except for the fact that I hadn't erased a lot of the photos from my CF cards and so I was able to get them off through my SanDisk card reader. POINT: The CF cards didn't fail…the Photo Safe II did. Tech Support offered some good recommendations but I had already tried most of these as I have 25 years of working with computers. I tried four different data recovery programs and none of them helped either. The Bottom Line: When you can't see photos on a photo viewer such as this, after you have off-loaded them from a memory card, you blindly trust someone else's technology. I have an Epson Viewer that I can literally review the photos on afterwards on an LCD screen. (I didn't use it because it only has 20 GB of capacity.) I am hoping to get a refund for this but it won't even come close to covering my costs and the lost revenues from my clients. The trip was mostly one big costly mistake and YES, SHAME ON ME! Don't buy this device if you value the photos you are trusting to it!

dissapointed

Life Made Easier

This item was purchased to store photos on our Alaskan Cruise. Initially used it with excellent results and look forward to putting this piece of equipment to the ultimate test in May 2010. It is not uncommon for me to take 300 to 400 photos a day, thus the need for additional portable storage while on the cruise. As of the present time, this gets a very high score from me.

Save memories at a great price

My laptop is great for auto trips, but flew to Africa and a 17incher was too big/heavy. Got two of the Foci PS II as backups. Worked great! Made for 110-240 power, so all you need is the plug converter when overseas. Just be careful putting in the card, especially the Compact Flash. Sometimes it would be hard to get it in the slot. Physical size is great and capacity is fabulous. All that and a price you can't believe is so low.

Excellent companion!!!

Get one, and keep a second battery fully charged if you are a heavy user...you'll love it! Shooting RAW has never been easier as far as storage, why take a chance with JPEG only? This little device performs great.
