These reels are useless

I bought two of these reels today, I'm returning them both tomorrow. [...]I went ahead and bought them thinking they might still be usable. No such luck. I sacrificed an unused roll of film to test them out and was completely unable to load film onto either of them. These things are garbage -- buy them only if you want to ruin your film and lose the shots you worked very hard to get.

Excellent quality ! Just what I needed !

By

I just started developing my own film and prints. I love older cameras and film types and I needed a spool for 120 film. It arrived promptly and I couldn't be more happy ! I'm buying all of my developing products from Adorama and you should to !

Buy the Hewes

By

I tried this as a second reel after having happily used a Hewes reel for a while. After trying to use this for a couple rolls, I returned it and bought the more expensive Hewes like the first time. The Hewes is just better designed, and saving $25 once was not worth the aggravation every time I load a roll of film. The center clip on this reel faces the wrong way for easy loading of the film edge onto the core. The clip is pointy and faces the film, making it tough to get the film clipped under it without scratching or ripping it, and making it close to impossible to hold the clip open with one hand while managing the strip of film with the other. By contrast, the Hewes reel's clip faces away from the film, letting you pull it back with one hand while slipping the edge of the film under it with the other hand. Much easier and less risk of ripping the film. The Hewes reel's clip is also fixed in place, as opposed to sliding back and forth along the core like this one. The sliding makes it more difficult to manage in the dark. Otherwise the construction is good, but I feel that the clip ruins it, unless I'm just using it wrong.

Junk - buy the Hewes

By

This reel is badly designed. The spring clip is oriented the wrong way to allow one hand to pull it back while the other slips the film under it. First frame on the roll is ripped as a result - I managed to get the film on the reel, but barely, and after scratching and then ripping the first frame. I'm able to load film onto the Hewes reels pretty easily, and without damaging the film.

Thanks for making the item available

By

The reel works fine. I usually find that these types of reels are easy to load, but had some difficulties when using a changing bag. It would be easier to use if one were in a dark room rather than using a changing bag, because it is difficult to insert the film correctly and keep the film curved while rolling it into the reel.

good for the money.

By

its inexpensive, which i like. the quality is o.k. not top of the line for sure. i'm not blowing tons of rolls through it every week, so its fine for me. i just couldn't see spending $30-40.00 on a reel. i think the people who gave bad reviews don't know how to load a stainless reel. or they got a bad batch.

These are junk!!

By

Save your money and buy Hewes reels or something comparable that is made out of thicker wire. These are completely worthless. The wire that they are made of is smaller making it nearly impossible to feed the film onto the reel without it slipping out of the grooves. I can't even load them in the light while I'm watching what I'm doing and I'm no rookie! [...]

These are junk!!

By

I only have two 120 reels and wanted two more so my g/f got me two of these for Christmas. They are absolutely worthless. The gauge of the wire is too small making it nearly impossible to feed the film onto the reel correctly. My other two reels are made from noticeably heavier wire and they work perfect. Spend the extra money and get good reels.

It's a piece of junk. Go with Hewes reel

By

This reel is a piece of junk. I finally gave up trying to use it. The center clip is too small to hold the film. The spirals are not large enough diameter to guide the film on the reel. Go with the Hewes reel instead.
